Riparian study: hourly microclimate data from the Coweeta Hydrologic Laboratory from 1994 to 2007

This data set contains air temperature and soil temperature data from the control (hurricane) slope and treatment (manual rhododendron removal) slope on watershed 56 at Coweeta Hydrologic Laboratory. The arrays of thermocouple sensors are arranged along transects that are parallel to the stream channel and 1, 5, and 15 m uphill for each slope. Data were collected from 1994 to 2007 when dataloggers were removed.

Water Temperature measured at Shark River, Everglades National Park (FCE) from October 2007 to August 2008

American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis) are top predators in the Florida Coastal Everglades (FCE), but their movement patterns and role in the ecosystem are largely unknown. Proposed restoration and management efforts in the Everglades are likely to influence both alligator movements and the spatiotemporal patterns of their effects on ecosystem and community dynamics, making studies of the factors influencing alligator movements important at this time. In October 2007, we initiated a study of alligators in the Shark River Slough of Everglades National Park using two tracking techniques that have yet to be used on crocodilians: GPS tracking and passive acoustic telemetry. GPS units attached to two alligators have provided 120 positions over a two month period while acoustic transmitters attached to 12 alligators have been detected 34,000 times on an array of 8 monitoring stations within the river system. GPS positions are more accurate than acoustic monitoring and can provide data over the entire range an alligator might move, but acoustic transmitters provide more temporally detailed information on movements within a monitoring array and over a longer duration (potentially years rather than months). Our preliminary results show that alligators may remain in localized areas for weeks at a time, but make long-distance moves from the mouth of the river system to the marsh-mangrove ecotone and likely into the marsh. In general, most alligators moved upstream as freshwater inputs decreased, but some individuals remained near the river mouth even when salinities were high. Ultimately, by characterizing alligator movements in relation to spatiotemporal variation in environmental factors we will be able to predict how alligator distributions and populations will respond to planned increases in freshwater flow. Between 2007 and 2011 we placed HOBO continuous water temperature loggers at 17 locations in the Shark River Estuary for various lengths of times. These stations expanded FCE's spatial coverage in terms of temperature monitoring in the estuary.

Plant allometry at GCE sampling site 8 in October, 2007

The relationship between height and mass (allometry) was measured for plants collected from Georgia Coastal Ecosystems sampling site 8 in October 2007. This dataset supplements PLT-GCEM-0211b by providing data for 3 rare species that are common only at site 8. Shoots were collected adjacent to permanent plots in appropriate marsh zones by clipping at the soil surface. Height, flowering status (Typha and Panicum species only), and dry mass were measured for each plant. The allometric relationships determined in this study will allow annual GCE plant monitoring data to be converted from height to mass. This study may be repeated in the future to examine temporal trends in relation to environmental changes.

Fall 2007 grasshopper monitoring -- mid-marsh grasshopper abundance and species diversity at eight GCE LTER sampling sites

Grasshopper abundance and species diversity were investigated at eight sampling sites within the Georgia Coastal Ecosystems (GCE) LTER study area in July-August 2007. Visual surveys were conducted along 8 2m by 10m transects randomly allocated within the mid-marsh zone at each site. All grasshoppers observed within each transect were counted and identified to species, if possible. This survey was conducted as part of the GCE invertebrate monitoring program, and will be performed annually to assess long-term changes in relative species abundances across the GCE study area.

Large-scale woody plant removal outcomes in southern New Mexico, USA, 2007-2024

This data package contains datasets from a large-scale woody plant-specific herbicide experiment in southern New Mexico, USA. The study monitored vegetation cover in 43 pairs of plots representing treated and untreated conditions of the same plant community and environmental setting, including baseline and records at 5, 10, and in some cases 15 years post treatment. We also evaluated environmental factors that may control variation in treatment outcomes. This package supports the manuscript “Large-scale experimental evaluation of woody plant removal outcomes in desert grassland: restoration, novelty, or degradation?” by Bestelmeyer, Burkett, James, Gamon, and Schooley.

Soil water content under rainfall manipulation and nitrogen fertilization treatments at the Jornada Basin LTER site, 2007-2009

This data package contains soil water content data from a precipitation and nitrogen manipulation experiment conducted on the Jornada Experimental Range from 2006-2009. The objective of the study was to understand the interaction of precipitation and nitrogen dynamics on ANPP legacies. Rain-out shelters were used to create 5 levels of precipitation: 80% reduced, 50% reduced, ambient control, 50% increased, and 80% increased precipitation. Half of the plots were randomly assigned to receive ammonium nitrate fertilizer. In a subset of the plots, volumetric soil water content was monitored at shallow (0-5 cm) and deep (30-50 cm) depths. This data set contains the date of collection, block number, plot number, 2007-2008 precipitation treatment, 2009 precipitation treatment, nitrogen treatment, depth of soil probe, sensor voltage, and volumetric water content. Monitoring of soil moisture for this study was discontinued in November 2009. Also available are plant cover data from this study in data package knb-lter-jrn.210278002. Pre-dawn water potential of leaves from reduced and enhanced precipitation treatments at the Jornada Basin LTER site, 2007-2008

This data package contains pre-dawn water potential data for leaves collected from mesquite shrubs and black grama grasses at the Jornada Basin LTER site in 2007-2008. The purpose of this study was to quantify ecophysiological performance of shrubs and grasses in the context of precipitation manipulations. One mesquite and one black grama leaf from each plot (n = 20 plots; 5 PPT treatments X 4 replicate plots/treatment) were measured 5 times beginning July 2007 and ending in August 2008. The precipitation treatments consisted of +/-80%, +/-50%, and ambient/control. Leaves were excised from plants and immediately measured for water potential (MPa) with a pressure chamber at least 0.5 h before dawn. The data set is complete.

Microplankton counts from discrete water column samples using flow imaging microscopy (FlowCam) from Lakes Fryxell and Hoare, McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica (2007-2011)

This data package consists of microplankton counts from discrete water column samples collected at various depths in Lake Fryxell and Lake Hoare in the McMurdo Dry Valleys region of Antarctica. Samples were collected and preserved during the austral summer-autumn transition in 2007-2008 and in addition to routine McMurdo Dry Valley Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) core limnological sampling in November and December of 2008, 2010, and 2011. Data were imaged using flow cytometry (FlowCam VS-IV) and classified with statistical image-based software (Visual Spreadsheet, v4.17.14). These data include haptorian ciliates, filamentous cyanobacteria, and coccoidal algae particle counts per milliliter that were automatically classified from user-built libraries and statistical filters based on the morphological characterizations of the plankton.

Haptorian ciliate measurements from discrete water column samples using flow imaging microscopy (FlowCam) from Lakes Fryxell and Hoare, McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica (2007-2020)

This data package consists of particle diameter and biovolume data for haptorian ciliates classified from discrete water column samples collected at various depths in Lake Fryxell and Lake Hoare in the McMurdo Dry Valleys region of Antarctica. Samples were collected and preserved between November 2007 and January 2020 in Lake Fryxell and between November 2007 and March 2008 in Lake Hoare. Samples were collected and analyzed as part of the McMurdo Dry Valleys Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) core limnological sampling. Data were imaged using flow cytometry (FlowCam VS-IV) and imaged particles were classified with statistical image-based software (Visual Spreadsheet, v4.17.14). Diameter and biovolume was generated for each particle using FlowCam’s area-based diameter (ABD) algorithm.

MCR LTER: Coral Reef: Growth and scaling of photosynthetic energy intake in Fungia concinna: Elahi & Edmunds 2007 JEMBE

For many marine invertebrates, the maximum size of an individual is influenced heavily by environmental factors and may be limited by energetic constraints. In this study, an energetic model developed originally for anemones was applied to the free-living scleractinian Fungia concinna (Verrill) from Moorea, French Polynesia to test the hypothesis that energetic constraints limit the size of this solitary coral. The modified model assumed that photosynthesis was the primary source of metabolic energy, and that metabolic costs were represented by aerobic respiration; these sources and sinks of energy were compared using daily energy budgets that were analyzed using double logarithmic regressions of energy against coral size. These data were published in Elahi, R. and P.J. Edmunds. 2007. Determinate growth and the scaling of photosynthetic energy intake in the solitary coral Fungia concinna (Verrill). Journal of Experimental Marine Biology and Ecology 349:183-193. and were part of the masters thesis of R. Elahi (2005). Aboveground net primary productivity, species composition and species richness data for NutNet site, 2007 - 2017

In 2007, a NutNet (http://www.nutnet.umn.edu/) site was established in a dry meadow site east of T-van on Niwot Ridge to assess multiple resource limitation on alpine grassland productivity and species composition. Nutrient treatments were added every other year starting in 2008. Treatments consisted of eight levels of nutrient addition (control, N, P, micro, N+P, N+micro, P+micro, and N+P+micro), replicated across four blocks. Untreated controls and all-nutrient treatments were replicated twice within each block for a total of 40 experiment plots. Starting in 2016, Potassium (K) was added as potash (K2SO4) to plots treated with micronutrients. Baseline data on above-ground biomass was sampled in 2007, prior to fertilizer application. Biomass clipping was repeated in 2013 and species composition measured in 2013 and 2017.
