Inventory and description of thermokarst features observed along the Umiat Corridor in July 2009.

Using a combination of aerial imagery and ~1m resolution airborne lidar (collected July, 2009), we use manual visual inspection of the two datasets to identify point locations of over 7000 thermal erosion features (thermokarst) of varying maturity. For each feature we report its x,y position, the facing direction of the feature, the local topographic setting, the geologic unit it occurs on, the relative age of the feature and the specific type of thermal erosion feature.

Meteorological data near thermokarst sites around Toolik Lake Field Station, Summer 2009-Summer 2012

GroMeteorological parameters were measured hourly adjacent to thermokarst features in the region around Toolik Field Station. Pressure, rainfall, wind speed and direction, solar radiation, air temperature and relative humidity were all measured at 1-3m above the ground surface with an Onset U30 weather station connected to all sensors.

Turbulence and flux data from eddy flux platform on Toolik Lake, Alaska 2009-2015.

Yearly file describing the turbulence conditions on Toolik Lake including the CH4, CO2 and H2O fluxes over the lake adjacent to the Toolik Field Research Station (68 38'N, 149 36'W). This location is a floating platform where eddy flux measurements have been made, and should not be confused with either the Toolik Field Station Climate site, which is a land-based station, or the Toolik Lake Climate Station that is lake-based but at a different location (approximately 300 m from the eddy platform). These data were used in the Eugster et al. (2020) article that appeared in Environmental Science: Processes and Impacts. Note that the quality flagging system in this file is only for reference, it was not used in the named article. Instead, the 9-level system by Foken et al. was calculated (see Eugster et al. 2020), but no data were eliminated to avoid bias from wrong assumptions made in this approach if measurements are not performed over a terrestrial vegetated land surface.

Vegetation Plots of the Bonanza Creek LTER Control Plots: Species Percent Cover (1975 - 2009)

This study is a survey of the vegetation of the 35 control sites in Bonanza Creek LTER. The 35 sites represent replicates each of six successional stages of primary succession on the floodplain of the Tanana River and four stages of succession uplandsas well as a few recently burned sites. Data include percent cover of all species and count based on twenty 1 m2 or 4 m2 plots. Plots in young stages of succession were remeasured every 1 to 2 years; those in older stages every 3 to 5 years. Some information on biomass in these stages is available. Although most sites were established in 1988 some sites have vegetation plots that have been sampled periodically since 1965. 2009 was the last year of sampling using visual estimates of percent cover. In 2007 a new point framing system was developed and is now used for collecting vegetation data from these sites.

Eight Mile Lake Research Watershed, Carbon in Permafrost Experimental Heating Research (CiPEHR): The radiocarbon value of ecosystem respiration, 2009-2012 I: Reco.

In this larger study, we are asking the question: Is old carbon that comprises the bulk of the soil organic matter pool released in response to thawing of permafrost? We are answering this question by using a combination of field and laboratory experiments to measure radiocarbon isotope ratios in soil organic matter, soil respiration, and decomposition in tundra ecosystems. The objective of these proposed measurements is to develop a mechanistic understanding of the SOM sources contributing to C losses following permafrost thawing. We are making these measurements at an established tundra field site near Healy, Alaska in the foothills of the Alaska Range. Field measurements center on a natural experiment where permafrost has been observed to warm and thaw over the past several decades. This area represents a gradient of sites each with a different degree of change due to permafrost thawing. As such, this area is unique for addressing questions at the time and spatial scales relevant for change in arctic ecosystems. This data set includes the growing season radiocarbon values of ecosystem and plant respiration at the thaw gradient and CiPEHR (a permafrost warming experiment). Depending on the year, the measurements were taken monthly during the growing season or just once a growing season.

Yukon River Basin Fire and Permafrost Study: Elevation of soil surface and permafrost table along transects with different fire disturbance regimes (2009-2012)

Two 100 - 200 m transects were established on hilly loess deposits in the Yukon Flats near Boot Lake to monitor annual changes in the permafrost table and thaw settlement under different fire disturbance regimes. One was located in an area that burned around 1925; the other transect was located in a 2009 burn. Both transects were partially affected by a fire in 1967. This dataset includes the elevations of the ground surface, permafrost surface, water table, and surface organic thickness measurements. Note that there was compaction of the organic layer due to human disturbance along the portion of the transect that burned in only 1925. These transects are associated with the burned and unburned silty upland sites detailed in related datasets.

Fireline surface level and thaw depths: Wickersham fire sites (1977 - 2009)

In June of 1971, the Wickersham fire burned 6313 ha in an open black spruce forest underlain with permafrost and provided an opportunity to study fire and fireline effects on the rate and patterns of permafrost, vegetation, and soil recovery. Because of the fire?s proximity to Fairbanks, a concentrated effort was made to control the fire and 29 bulldozers constructed 113 km of fireline which averaged 12 m in width (Viereck and Dyrness 1979). The construction of firelines with heavy machinery involves the complete removal of vegetation and the soil organic layer down to mineral soil. The removal of the organic layer and subsequent loss of thermal insulation results in an increase in permafrost depth of thaw. In addition, thermal subsidence, erosion, and formation of gullies makes the fireline surface unstable and full recovery tends to be a lengthy process. This long-term study examines fireline surface level changes and maximum depth of thaw over time on cross sections of two firelines underlain with ice rich permafrost.

Coweeta LTER Synoptic Data from 56 sampling sites located in the Upper Little Tennessee River Basin from 2009 (geomorphological)

Coweeta LTER researchers sampled fifty-eight stream sites in the Upper Little Tennessee River Basin in February and June of 2009. Sites were selected to represent the range of land cover and land use within the basin. Samples were taken over three days of stable weather and discharge during periods of baseflow. They were used to characterize conditions across the basin during the growing and the non-growing seasons without the influence of elevated discharge. Coweeta Synoptic Data from 49 sampling sites in the Upper Little Tennessee River Basin from 2009 to 2010 (drainage area, slope, particle size data)

This data was generated as part of synoptic sampling conducted at the Coweeta LTER between June 2009 and May 2010. 49 wadeable streams with low levels of development were sampled throughout the Upper Little Tennessee River Basin in the Southern Appalachians. This dataset contains the location code (visually categorized basin landcover), drainage area, slope, riparian code (visually categorized riparian conditions), percent fines (<2mm), and median particle size (D50) calculated from a Wolman pebble count. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of riparian vegetative conditions on a suite of channel morphological variables. At each site, a uniform 150 meter section of stream was surveyed. Within each reach, the active and bankfull channel widths were measured every 5 meters, where active channel width was defined as the vegetationless channel bed from left vegetation break to right vegetation break. All wood exceeding 10 cm diameter and 1.0 m length were tallied. A Wolman pebble count (N = 100) was conducted on the coarsest riffle in each stream reach. Slopes were measured from the upstream end of riffles over three riffle-to-riffle sequences with a level rod and tape. Riparian conditions at each reach were visually categorized. Drainage area was determined from 2006 Landsat imagery.
