Living organisms and sedimentary remains from high mountain lakes in the Alps collected in Summer 2000

A data set of environmental and biological data collected in 2000 during the ice-free period in high mountain lakes located above the local timberline in the Alps, in Italy, Switzerland and Austria. Environmental data include coordinates, geographical attributes and detailed information on vegetation, bedrock and land use in lake catchments. Chemical analyses of a sample for each lake collected at the lake surface in Summer 2000 are also reported. Biological data include phytoplankton, zooplankton, macroinvertebrates, benthic diatoms. Diatoms, cladoceran and chironomids remains and algal and bacterial pigments were also analysed in lake sediments.

Optically measured mean leaf traits from a large set of taxa growing in two botanical gardens: in the French Alps and southern Finland

This dataset contains records of the optically measured mean leaf traits (adaxial flavonol & anthocyanin index and chlorophyll index, units are an optical index of leaf/epidermal relative absorbance) from a large set of plant taxa growing at alpine botanical garden at the Joseph Fourier Field Station (Université Grenoble Alps, France; 2100 m a.s.l.; 45°2' 9" N, 6°23' 59" E) and at Kumpula Botanical Garden (LUOMUS, University of Helsinki, Finland; 14 m a.s.l.; 60° 12' 7" N, 24° 57' 26" E;). Optical measurements were made during the summers of 2014 and 2015 with a leaf-clip Dualex Scientific + (Force-A, Paris-Orsay, France) and all detailed information about the methods are published in Hartikainen and Robson, doi: 10.3389/fpls.2022.1058162. This dataset also includes spectrophotometer measurements of absorbance by phenolic compounds in leaf extracts in acidified methanol (abs range 290-400 nm) and mini-PAM measurements of chlorophyll fluorescence from different subsets of taxa at alpine botanical garden. All details concerning these data are given in Hartikainen and Robson (doi: 10.3389/fpls.2022.1058162) and its Supplementary Materials. Sheet with explanation of the different variables is also included.

European Alps Receiver Function Database

This dataset contains the receiver function traces calculated using seismic waveform data from the AlpArray Seismic Network, three other temporary seismic networks, and permanent stations in the broader European Alpine region. We use this dataset to compile a new Moho depth map for the broader European Alps.

In particular, we include:

all the downloaded seismic waveform data (ZNE components; 120s before and after the theoretical P-wave arrival) prior to RF calculation apart from those from the PACASE seismic network that are under embargo.

the radial receiver function traces in .SAC format (RRF.zip). One SAC trace per station and teleseismic earthquake.

the transverse (TRF.zip) traces in .SAC format.

the receiver function stacks from all the seismic stations plotted versus back-azimuth in .png format (RRF_plots.zip and TRF_plots.zip)

moho_depth_picks.csv that contains the moho depth picks information shown in the main article Figure 8a.

a CSV file with details of the teleseismic earthquakes.

a list of all the seismic stations used here.

For details on how to read and process the receiver function traces have a look at the README file of the repository.

For more details on this dataset, have a look at our manuscript entitled “Moho depths beneath the European Alps: a homogeneously processed map and receiver functions database” in Earth System Science Data (ESSD) journal and our GitHub repository.
