Environmental DNA reveals a multi-taxa biogeographic break across the Arabian Sea and Sea of Oman
<p>Environmental DNA (eDNA) is increasingly being used to assess community composition in marine ecosystems. Applying eDNA approaches across broad spatial scales now provide the potential to inform biogeographic analyses. However, to date, few studies have employed this technique to assess broad biogeographic patterns across multiple taxonomic groups. Here, we compare eDNA-derived communities of bony fishes and invertebrates, including corals and sponges, from 15 locations spanning the entire length of the Omani coast. This survey includes a variety of habitats, including coral and rocky reefs, and covers three distinct marine ecoregions. Our data support a known biogeographic break in fish communities between the north and the south of Oman; however, the eDNA data highlight that this faunal break is mostly reflected in schooling baitfish species (e.g., sardines and anchovies), whereas reef-associated fish communities appear more homogeneous along this coastline. Furthermore, our data provide indications that these biogeographic breaks also affect invertebrate communities, which includes corals, sponges, and broader eukaryotic groups. The observed community shifts were correlated with local environmental and anthropogenic differences characteristic of this coastline, particularly for the eDNA-derived bony fish communities. Overall, this study provides compelling support that eDNA sequencing and associated analyses may serve as powerful tools to detect community differences across biogeographic breaks and ecoregions, particularly in places where there is significant variation in oceanographic conditions or anthropogenic impacts.</p>

Holocene Arabian Sea stratification and deoxygenation driven by weakened monsoon
<p>This file contains the carbon and oxygen isotopes of G. ruber (w) and Mg/Ca-derived SST, mixed layer species, and δ18O (‰, VPDB) IFA on G. ruber, T. sacculifer, and N. dutertrei from site SK240/496 in the northeastern Arabian Sea. In addition, SST (°C) stack, PC1 score based on proxy and reanalysis SST (°C), and PC1 score (Osman et al., 2021) and dysoxic species (z-score) from the Arabian Sea. </p>

Isotope and faunal abundance and TOC data from eastern Arabian sea during last 25 kiloyear by Majumder et al., 2023
<p>We present multiproxy data spanning between ~25000 and 3500 calibrated years before the present (cal yr BP) from the eastern Arabian sea (EAS). This is possibly the first record of stable isotope record in pteropods from the EAS. Based on this dataset, we found that the Indian summer monsoon (ISM) was weak during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). Moreover, upwelling intensity was high during the early Holocene, which was followed by a significant weakening of ISM during the 4.2 ka event.</p>

Sr-Nd isotopes and organic geochemistry from IODP Site U1456 in the eastern Arabian Sea since 700 ka
<p>Site U1456 (location: 16°37.28′N, 68°50.33′E; length: 1109.4 m) was drilled at a water depth of 3640 m within the Laxmi Basin in the eastern Arabian Sea duirng International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 355. We here focus on the upper 82.02 m core composite depth below seafloor (CCSF) at Site U1456, deposited since ~700 ka. Sr-Nd isotopic compositions of the clay-sized detrital sediment fractions (12 samples) and concentrations of the total organic carbon (TOC, 101 samples), total nitrogen (TN, 101 samples), and biogenic silica (BSi, 101 samples) were analyzed using a thermal ionization mass spectrometer (Phoenix), a Carlo Erba Elemental Analyzer (1108), a CO2 Coulometer (CM5014), and a wet alkaline extraction method.</p>
