Model and data for: Economical defense of resources structures territorial space use in a cooperative carnivore

<p>Manuscript Abstract: Ecologists have long sought to understand space use and mechanisms underlying patterns observed in nature. We developed an optimality landscape and mechanistic territory model to understand mechanisms driving space use and compared model predictions to empirical reality. We demonstrate our approach using gray wolves (<i>Canis lupus</i>). In the model, simulated animals selected territories to economically acquire resources by selecting patches with greatest value, accounting for benefits, costs, and tradeoffs of defending and using space on the optimality landscape. Our approach successfully predicted and explained first- and second-order space use of wolves, including the population's distribution, territories of individual packs, and influences of prey density, competitor density, human-caused mortality risk, and seasonality. It accomplished this using simple behavioral rules and limited data to inform the optimality landscape. Results contribute evidence that economical territory selection is a mechanistic bridge between space use and animal distribution on the landscape. This approach and resulting gains in knowledge enable predicting effects of a wide range of environmental conditions, contributing to both basic ecological understanding of natural systems and conservation. We expect this approach will demonstrate applicability across diverse habitats and species, and that its foundation can help continue to advance understanding of spatial behavior.</p> <p>Model &amp; Data Abstract: In support of the above manuscript, all model files and data to re-create the analyses for the manuscript are included on Dryad. Data from: Dispersal decreases survival but increases reproductive opportunities for subordinates in a cooperative breeder

<p>In most socially structured populations, the formation of new groups depends on the survival and reproduction of dispersing individuals. Quantifying vital rates in dispersers, however, is difficult due to logistic challenges of following wide-ranging animals. Here, using data from free-ranging meerkats (<i>Suricata suricatta</i>), we estimated survival and reproduction of dispersing and established resident females. Meerkat groups consist of a dominant pair and several subordinate helpers. Female helpers are evicted from their resident groups by the dominant female, allowing her to monopolize reproduction, and evicted females may form small dispersing coalitions. As in established resident groups, one female is behaviourally dominant in parties of dispersing females.</p> <p>We compared the survival, birth, and recruitment rates of dominant and subordinate females in dispersing coalitions to those of dominant and subordinate females in resident groups. We further compared the frequencies of different mortality causes (e.g., predation, disease) between dispersers and residents. For dispersers, we assessed if survival rates varied with dispersal distance and between transience and settlement stages of dispersal.</p> <p>During dispersal and the first four months after new group formation, survival is lower for all females compared to established resident groups. At the same time, subordinates in disperser groups have higher birth rates than those in established groups, which rarely breed successfully. This may partly offset the survival costs of dispersal to subordinate females. Further studies of dispersal based on direct observation of dispersing animals are needed to explore the costs and benefits of dispersal in species with contrasting breeding systems.</p>

The cost of noise: Stochastic punishment falls short of sustaining cooperation in social dilemma experiments

<p>Identifying mechanisms able to sustain costly cooperation among self-interested agents is a central problem across social and biological sciences. One possible solution is peer punishment: when agents have an opportunity to sanction defectors, classical behavioral experiments suggest that cooperation can take root. Overlooked from standard experimental designs, however, is the fact that real-world human punishment---the administration of justice---is intrinsically noisy. Here we show that stochastic punishment falls short of sustaining cooperation in the repeated public good game. As punishment noise increases, we find that contributions decrease and punishment efforts intensify, resulting in a 45% drop in gains compared to a noiseless control. Moreover, we observe that uncertainty causes a rise in antisocial punishment, a mutually harmful behavior previously associated with societies with a weak rule of law. Our approach brings to light challenges to cooperation that cannot be explained by economic rationality and strengthens the case for further investigations of the effect of noise---and not just bias---on human behavior.</p>

Staging to join non-kin groups in a classical cooperative breeder, the Florida scrub-jay

<p>1. Why unrelated members form groups in animal societies remains a pertinent topic in evolutionary biology because benefits for group members often are not obvious. We studied subordinates that disperse to join unrelated social groups in the Florida scrub-jay Aphelocoma coerulescens, a cooperative breeding species mainly composed of kin-based groups. 2. We evaluated potential adaptive benefits of dispersing to become an unrelated helper (staging) versus remaining home and dispersing only to pair and breed (direct dispersal) to understand why non-kin-based groups form. 3. Using 35 years of demographic data, we quantified life history aspects of staging individuals and tested associations between social and ecological factors on the natal and staging territories. We compared fitness outcomes between dispersal strategies by analyzing survival, breeding recruitment, and direct reproductive output. We tested for sexual asymmetry potentially driven by differences in territory acquisition patterns and female-biased dispersal for this species. 4. Of birds that reached one-year-old, 28% staged at a non-natal territory before breeding or disappearing. Staging dispersers departed at younger ages and moved greater distances than direct dispersers. When looking at proximate factors on the natal territory associated with staging, males left groups with many same-sex helpers, while females often left when their father disappeared. For both sexes, staging individuals more likely came from high-quality territories and joined groups with fewer same-sex helpers than in their natal group. While staging and direct dispersers did not differ in survival or likelihood of becoming a breeder, staging males became breeders later and had lower lifetime reproductive success than direct dispersers. 5. In Florida scrub-jays, staging appears to be an alternative strategy for female helpers, but a best-of-a-bad-situation for males. This sexual asymmetry is consistent with males having more options than females to achieve higher reproductive success by breeding near home. Tradeoffs in cost-benefits of departing natal territory and joining unrelated groups as a helper seem to best explain alternative dispersal patterns, with optimal social queues primarily driving the benefits. This research highlights plasticity in dispersal behavior in response to social and environmental conditions and offers new perspective in our understanding of non-kin-based social groups.</p>

Influence of a university cooperation on the development of interprofessional competences

<p class="MsoNormal"><strong><span>Objectives</span></strong></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span>This project carried out in cooperation between the University of Applied Sciences for Health Professions Upper Austria (UASHPUA) and the Medical Faculty of Johannes Kepler University Linz (MFJKUL), describes the feasibility, i.e., the planning and implementation, and presents selected results of an inter-university lecture on interprofessional cooperation. </span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><strong><span>Methodology</span></strong></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span>The lecture "Grundlagen zu interprofessioneller Zusammenarbeit im Gesundheitswesen (IPZ3I)" / "<a>Introduction to interprofessional cooperation in health care </a></span><span>(IPZ3I)") as well as an interprofessional job shadowing were designed. The pilot lecture started in the winter semester (WS) 2019/20. An evaluation of IPZ3I was undertaken by means of a questionnaire.  </span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><strong><span>Results</span></strong></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span>IPZ3I was held in WS 2019/20 for 296 students from nine different health care professions and included a specialist lecture, the presentation of the professions, and interprofessional case processing. In the evaluation approx. 80 % of the students described a better understanding of the interprofessional collaboration. More than 70 % regard interprofessional courses in education as important or very important. The majority of respondents indicate that after completing the lecture they can make recommendations for action for interprofessional cooperation. </span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><strong><span>Conclusions</span></strong></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span>The joint lecture IPZ3I will be maintained at both universities. The process of evaluation and adaptation of curricula at UASHPUA is currently underway. This includes, for instance, consultations with the curriculum officers at MFJKUL, and the exploration of further possibilities to identify and to implement joint interprofessional teaching aspects in the curricula. This shall be achieved by considering the existing resources, increasing student numbers at MFJKUL as of 2023, planned curricula revisions as well as using possible synergies aiming at an extension of the existing cooperation. </span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><strong><span>Key words</span></strong></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span>Interprofessionalism; project description; curriculum development; competency-based education </span></p>

Stress axis programming generates long-term effects on cognitive abilities in a cooperative breeder

<p><span>The ability to flexibly adjust behaviour to social and non-social challenges is important for successfully navigating variable environments. Social competence, i.e., adaptive behavioural flexibility in the social domain, allows individuals to optimize their expression of social behaviour. Behavioural flexibility outside the social domain aids in coping with ecological challenges. However, it is unknown if social and non-social behavioural flexibility share common underlying cognitive mechanisms. Support for such shared mechanism would be provided if the same neural mechanisms in the brain affected social and non-social behavioural flexibility similarly. We used individuals of the cooperatively-breeding fish <em>Neolamprologus pulcher</em> that had undergone early-life programming of the hypothalamic-pituitary-interrenal (HPI) axis by exposure to (i) cortisol, (ii) the glucocorticoid-receptor antagonist mifepristone or (iii) control treatments, and where effects of stress-axis programming on social flexibility occurred. One year after the treatments, adults learned a colour-discrimination task, and subsequently, a reversal-learning task testing for behavioural flexibility. Early-life mifepristone treatment only marginally affected learning performance, whereas cortisol treatment significantly reduced behavioural flexibility. Thus, early-life cortisol treatment reduced both social and non-social behavioural flexibility, suggesting a shared cognitive basis of behavioural flexibility. Further our findings imply that early-life stress programming affects the ability of organisms to flexibly cope with environmental stressors.</span></p>

Dataset: Sanctions and international interaction improve cooperation to avert climate change

<p>Imposing sanctions on non-compliant parties to international agreements is advocated as a remedy for international cooperation failure. Nevertheless, sanctions are costly, and rational choice theory predicts their ineffectiveness in improving cooperation. We test sanctions effectiveness experimentally in international collective-risk social dilemmas simulating efforts to avoid catastrophic climate change. We involve individuals from countries where sanctions were shown to be effective (Germany) or ineffective (Russia) in increasing cooperation. Here we show that, while this result still holds nationally, international interaction backed by sanctions is beneficial. Cooperation by low cooperator groups increases relative to national cooperation and converges to the levels of high cooperators. This result holds regardless of revealing other group members' nationality, suggesting that participants' specific attitudes or stereotypes over the other country were irrelevant. Groups interacting under sanctions contribute more to catastrophe prevention than what would maximise expected group payoffs. This behaviour signals a strong propensity for protection against collective risks.</p>

Similar to phoneme processing, behavioral studies have suggested that Chinese tone is categorically perceived. However, its underlying neural mechanism remains poorly understood. By conducting cortical surface recordings in surgical patients, we revealed a cooperative cortical network along with its dynamics responsible for this categorical perception. Based on an oddball paradigm, we found amplified neural dissimilarity between cross-category tone pairs, rather than between within-category tone pairs, over cortical sites covering both the ventral and dorsal streams of speech processing. The bilateral superior temporal gyrus (STG) and the middle temporal gyrus (MTG) exhibited increased response latencies and enlarged neural dissimilarity, suggesting a ventral hierarchy that gradually differentiates the acoustic features of lexical tones. In addition, the bilateral motor cortices were also found to be involved in categorical processing, interacting with both the STG and the MTG and exhibiting a response latency in between. Moreover, the motor cortex received enhanced Granger causal influence from the semantic hub, the anterior temporal lobe, in the right hemisphere. These unique data suggest that there exists a distributed cooperative cortical network supporting the categorical processing of lexical tone in tonal language speakers, not only encompassing a bilateral temporal hierarchy that is shared by categorical processing of phonemes but also involving intensive speech-motor interactions over the right hemisphere, which might be the unique machinery responsible for the reliable discrimination of tone identities.</p>

Cooperative circumnavigation with event-triggered bearing measurements

<p>This demonstration shows a team of Aerial Robotic Workers (ARW)s performing a circumnavigation mission. The ARWs circumnavigate a virtual target whose position is progressively estimated by means of event-triggered bearing measurements.</p> <p>The control objective is that the ARWs circumnavigate the target at a desired speed, while forming a regular polygon around the target.</p> <p>Each ARW maintains a running estimation of the position of the target, which is updated every time a new bearing measurement is taken. New bearing measurements are triggered with a recursive law that guarantees that the estimated position converges to the real position of the virtual target.</p> <p>Each ARW intermittently monitors the relative position of the ARW that precedes it in the circumnavigation, and adjusts its circumnavigation speed according to such relative position. This control logic allows the ARW to converge to a regular polygon around the target.</p> <p>The control algorithm is implemented on a ROS architecture where the controller of each ARW corresponds to a different ROS node.</p>

The database of housing cooperatives in Poland and the Czech Republic as of September 2023

<p>The database of housing cooperatives was prepared as part of the <a href="https://ibs.org.pl/en/research/enbloc-enabling-energy-transition-in-postsocialist-housing-cooperatives/">ENBLOC</a> project based on REGON and National Register Court data through the rejestr.io portal and the Czech Statistical Office. The database includes information about housing cooperatives&rsquo; names, locations, and size ranges as of September 2023. The data can serve as a valuable source of knowledge about housing cooperatives for housing researchers and cooperative members, banks, and other entities.</p>

Does sentinel presence improve foraging success? A study in a cooperative breeder

<p>In various cooperative breeding species, a group member often sentinels from a prominent position that enables early detection of approaching predators and then utters alarm calls to which the other group members react immediately. We tested in the cooperatively breeding Arabian babbler (<em>Argya squamiceps</em>), whether in the presence of a sentinel the other group members forage for longer or more effectively. In natural observations, at different distances from the shelter and in different group sizes, we found no effect of sentinel presence on foraging time. Likewise, in a giving-up density (GUD) experiment with artificial food patches containing mealworms at each of three different distances from the shelter, fewer mealworms were consumed further from the shelter, irrespective of whether a sentinel was present or not during foraging. While foragers react to a sentinel's alarm calls when a predator approaches, our findings indicate that Arabian babbler foragers do not improve their foraging efficiency due to the sentinel's presence. Combined with previous studies on the Arabian babbler, these findings reinforce the conclusion that in this species the sentinel is 'selfish' and benefits from early detection of predators. These results contrast with those from other cooperative breeders in which sentinels utter calming calls and foraging efficiency increases when sentinels are present. We, therefore, suggest that similar sentinel behaviour may serve different sentinel systems and functions in different cooperative breeders.</p>

Application of CoLD-CoP to Detecting Competitively and Cooperatively Binding Ligands

<p>CompetitiveCooperative_CoLD_CoP_for_archiving.zip will unzip into a directory with two sub-directories. The directory LysozymeNAG has directories with raw data (and NMRPipe format spectra processed in the direct dimension) for DOSYs acquired with a ligands only sample, a ligands + lysozyme sample and a ligands + lysozyme + NAG (N-Acetyl-Glucosamine) sample. This directory also has the key scripts used for DOSY processing and analysis of this dataset. The directory TyrosinaseHCCA similarly has directories with raw data (and NMRPipe format spectra processed in the direct dimension) for DOSYs acquired with a ligands only sample, a ligands + (mushroom) tyrosinase sample and a ligands + tyrosinase + HCCA (4-Hydroxy-a-Cyano-Cinnamic Acid) sample. The TyrosinaseHCCA directory has not only the key scripts used for DOSY processing and analysis of this dataset, but it also has 1D proton spectra acquired on each solution used in this arm of the project.&nbsp;</p> <p>The file das_dosy_nm.m is a customized version of the DOSY processing file used in DOSY processing instead of the dosy_nm.m file used in the DOSY Toolbox. Use of the scripts found in the directories described in the above paragraph requires das_dosy_nm.m as well as NMRPipe, the DOSY Toolbox (https://nmr.chemistry.manchester.ac.uk/?q=node/8), CoLD-CoP toolbox and Covariance Toolbox (both available via MATLAB Central File Exchange).</p> <p>The file lysozyme_complexes_for_docking.zip contains lysozyme structures as minimized in various complexes as well as the ligands from those complexes. These can be used for rescoring or further re-docking, e.g., in FastDRH. DockingAndEnergyMinimization.zip contains some of the files used for docking and energy minimization of the Lysozyme-NAG, Lysozyme-Tris and Lysozyme-GlcNAC complexes.&nbsp;</p>
