Jornada Basin and Experimental Range Mesquite Herbicide Project (JERHM) Connectivity Modifier Data, 2023
This dataset includes plant community composition, plant litter, soil depth, and shrub interspace fetch distance data collected in 2023 as part of the Jornada Experimental Range Herbicide Mesquite Project (JERHM). Data were collected to characterize plant community and ecosystem resource (plant litter, soil depth) responses to the use of Connectivity Modifiers (ConMods), which are used to reduce bare ground connectivity, alongside herbicide application to reduce honey mesquite (Neltuma glandulosa [=Prosopis glandulosa]) encroachment. ConMod and control (rebar-only) arrays were installed on 16 paired, 5-hectare plots, with one plot within each pair randomly selected to receive herbicide treatment in 2021 to reduce N. glandulosa abundance, or left untreated for comparison. Approximately 6 months after herbicide application (spring 2022), 12-unit ConMod and control (rebar-only) arrays were installed on experimental plots within 8 randomly selected N. glandulosa shrub interspaces (n = 8 arrays per plot, 4 per array type). Data were collected in the fall of 2023 at the end of the second growing season following array installation. There are no immediate plans to continue data collection.
Annual ground-based photographs taken at 15 net primary production (NPP) study sites at Jornada Basin LTER, 1996-ongoing
This data package contains a list of ground-based photographs taken at fifteen Net Primary Production (NPP) study sites at the Jornada Basin LTER. Sites were selected to represent the 5 major ecosystem types in the Chihuahuan Desert (upland grasslands, playa grasslands, mesquite-dominated shrublands, creosotebush-dominated shrublands, tarbush-dominated shrublands). For each ecosystem type, three sites were selected to represent the range in variability in production and plant diversity; thus the locations are not replicates. At each site, a 1 hectare area was fenced in 1988 and a grid of 49 (48 at one playa location) 1m x 1m replicate quadrats was laid out when vegetation sampling began in 1989. Beginning in 1996, annual photos were taken from each of the 4 corners of each of the 15 70-meter x 70-meter NPP sites between August and November, depending on other research activity constraints. From 1996-2002 photos were taken using 35mm color slide film. Beginning in 2003, digital photos were taken in JPG format. Occasionally, supplemental photos may be taken at the same time that provide additional habitat information at the landscape, patch, or plant species level. No photographs were taken in 2013. Photo files (.jpeg format) are included in annual ZIP archives attached to this data package. This is an ongoing dataset that is updated once per year.
Perennial species canopy cover across grazed/ungrazed fencelines at the Jornada Basin LTER, 1986-ongoing
This ongoing data set contains percent canopy cover estimates of perennial plant species from transects that cross a grazed/ungrazed boundary fenceline of a single exclosure on the New Mexico State University Chihuahuan Desert Rangeland Research Center in Dona Ana County, New Mexico, USA. In the spring of 1982, as part of the establishment of the Jornada Long-Term Ecological Research site in southern New Mexico, a 135 ha portion of a 1500 ha, internally drained, watershed was exclosed from grazing by domestic livestock. Prior to exclosure the watershed, as well as the rest of the Jornada basin, had been moderately to heavily grazed for the past 100 years. Concurrent with grazing, the vegetation had undergone a dramatic change from desert grassland, with an almost continuous cover of C4 perennial grasses, to isolated patches of the original grassland in a mosaic with desert shrub dominated plant communities (Buffington and Herbel, 1965). The exclosure lies along a northeast facing piedmont slope at the base of a steep isolated mountain peak, and covers a variety of component landforms from the foot of the mountain to the basin floor. This provided the opportunity to investigate the response of vegetation with respect to landscape characteristics as well as release from grazing. This summary data set consists of percent canopy cover of all perennial plant species from the plant line intercept measurements on either side of the LTER-I exclosure East and West boundary fence. Sampling occurs approximately every five years; it was last conducted in November 2015 and will take place again in 2020.

Streamflow and rain event data from the Tromble experimental watershed weir in the Jornada Basin, southern New Mexico USA, during 2 periods: 1977-1985 and 2003-2011
This data package contains long-term hydrologic event data collected in the Tromble experimental watershed in the Jornada Basin of southern New Mexico, USA. Streamflow and precipitation data were collected at an instrumented flume below a 4.7 hectare shrub-dominated catchment during two periods: 1977-1985 and 2003-2011. This dataset was assembled to evaluate the effects of changes in rainfall on runoff in this Chihuahauan desert watershed. Four data files are available here, including event precipitation totals and sub-hourly runoff details for hydrologic events during both time periods. Plant diverity and richness metrics across inter-annual precipitation variability treatments at a grassland site in the Jornada Basin, 2009-2014
This ongoing dataset contains metrics of plant diversity, evenness, and richness from a study at the Jornada Experimental Range (JER) in southern New Mexico. The study was designed to assess the effect of interannual variability in precipitation on average aboveground net primary productivity (ANPP) in Chihuahuan Desert grasslands. The study began in 2009, has five precipitation treatments (see Methods) and contains 50 plots (10 per treatment). This data package contains 6-year (2009 to 2014) means of metrics per plot. Annual and more recent data are available and will be released pending an upcoming publication.
Nematode abundance in soil cores collected beneath mesquite trees in irrigated and non-irrigated plots at the Jornada Basin LTER site, 1988
This data package contains nematode abundance in soils subjected to an irrigation experiment in mesquite coppice dune habitats during the early years of Jornada Basin LTER (LTER-I and II). The purpose of this study was to quantify total nematode abundance, and the abundance of nematode functional groups, in irrigated and non-irrigated (control) soils beneath mesquite plants (Prosopis glandulosa). Soil cores were taken from three depths (0-50cm, 50-100cm, and 100-150cm) then divided into subsamples for nematode investigation. Nematodes were quantified via a semi-automatic elutriator with sugar flotation-sieving and the Baerman Funnel technique. Nematodes were counted and separated into trophic groups: fungal feeders, bacterial feeders, plant parasites, and omnivore-predators. The data collection began in March 1988 and ended in October 1988. This dataset is complete.
Surface soil analyses from a range of mesquite sites at Jornada Basin LTER, 1986
This data package contains data from a series of analyses of surface soils in mesquite habitats during the early years of Jornada Basin LTER (LTER-I and II). The objective of the study was to determine whether there have been changes in the structure and function of the surface (0-20cm) soil system, the zone most affected by litter decomposition, associated with the rapid movement of mesquite (Prosopsis glandulosa) from historical habitats (arroyo and playa fringe) into recent habitats (grassland and dunes). The mesquite soils were sampled at 4 habitats (playa, coppice dune, arroyo, and grassland) in October 1986, with subsamples analyzed and incubated in the laboratory thereafter. This data set contains analyses for gravimetric soil moisture, pH, phosphate, total Kjeldahl nitrogen, total phosphorus, NO3-N nitrogen mineralization, total inorganic nitrogen, NH4 nitrogen mineralization, organic carbon, inorganic carbon, total roots, tap roots, intermediate roots, and fine roots. This data set is complete.
Soil carbon, soil nitrogen, and geometry of 30 playas and their catchment areas at the Jornada Basin LTER site in 2012
This data package contains soil carbon and nitrogen data at a range of soil depths from 30 ephemerally-flooded desert wetlands, or playas, in the Jornada Basin of southern New Mexico, USA. We conducted this study to assess how catchment biophysical variables control soil organic carbon and nitrogen in playas and how playas function differently than upland ecosystems. We chose 30 playas from across this Chihuahuan Desert Basin and collected 36 soil samples from four depths and nine locations. Soil cores samples were taken along two perpendicular transect lines to account for a topographic gradient from the edge of the playa to the center of the playa. At each of the nine locations, one sample was collected at four depths (0–10 cm, 10–30 cm, 30–60 cm, 60–100 cm). We measured soil organic carbon and total nitrogen concentrations in these soils using elemental combustion analysis. Using bulk density measurements for each depth range (m), we converted each soil measurement (g/g) to calculate concentrations of organic carbon and nitrogen per unit area (g/m^2) within the depth-ranges sampled. Soil water and chloride concentration profiles in 20 playas at the Jornada Basin LTER site in 2014
This data package contains soil water and chloride content data from cores collected in 20 playas in the Jornada Basin of southern New Mexico, USA. The objectives of this work were to assess the rates and controls of groundwater recharge through playas in the Southwestern USA. The twenty playas were cored to 5 meter depth and we used the chloride mass balance (CMB) approach to empirically estimate groundwater recharge beneath playa surfaces. The measured variables are gravimetric soil moisture (kg water/kg soil), soil bulk density (kg/m3), volumetric water content (m3/m3), and porewater chloride (mg/L). Biotic and abiotic composition of biological soil crusts in grassland and tarbush ecosystems at the Jornada Basin LTER site, 2017-2018
This data package contains data on biotic and abiotic composition of biological soil crusts at grassland and shrubland sites at the Jornada Basin LTER site. Biological soil crusts (BSCs) of three types, cyanolichen, dark algal, and light algal, were collected during the summer 2017, fall 2017, and spring 2018 seasons to discern differences between two vegetation states (grass and tarbush). A total of 51 biocrusts were collected from 3 tarbush sites and 3 grass sites. Phospholipid fatty acid analysis was used to characterize the microfloral community, while a modified extraction method was employed to observe direct counts of microfauna (multicellular microbes and protists). Soil chemical analysis was also used to obtain nutrient concentrations of each biocrust. Data include microfauna counts, microflora biomass, and soil nutrient composition. This study is complete.
Vascular Plant Species of the Jornada Basin, 1982-2018
This dataset contains a list of vascular plant species found in the Jornada Basin, an area at the southern end of the Jornada del Muerto in Dona Ana County, New Mexico, USA, bordered by the Rio Grande on the west and the San Andres Mountains on the east. The area encompases the Jornada Basin LTER, Chihuahuan Desert Rangeland Research Center of New Mexico State University, and the plains and bajadas (but not foothills and mountains) of the USDA Jornada Experimental Range. Taxonomy follows Allred, Kelly A. 2012. Flora Neomexican I: Annotated Checklist, 2nd edition and is cross-referenced to the taxonomy maintained by the Jornada Basin LTER (see Methods and Additional Information) as well as species codes to the USDA PLANTS database (plants.usda.gov). The project is a large synthesis effort focused on improving the accessibility and use of long-term data. At present, there are ~50 state and federally funded research sites that are participating and contributing to the EcoTrends project, including all 26 Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) sites and sites funded by the USDA Agriculture Research Service (ARS), USDA Forest Service, US Department of Energy, US Geological Survey (USGS) and numerous universities. Data from the EcoTrends project are available through an exploratory web portal (http://www.ecotrends.info). This web portal enables the continuation of data compilation and accessibility by users through an interactive web application. Ongoing data compilation is updated through both manual and automatic processing as part of the LTER Provenance Aware Synthesis Tracking Architecture (PASTA). The web portal is a collaboration between the Jornada LTER and the LTER Network Office.
