Associations of self-compassion with shame, guilt, and training motivation after sport-specific daily stress – a smartphone study

<p>By applying a diary study design, we investigated the role of selfcompassion during sport-specific daily stress (SSDS) with regard to the negative self-conscious emotions of shame and guilt and training motivation. We hypothesised that self-compassion would protect athletes from certain self-conscious emotions, namely shame, after SSDS. We also predicted that self-compassion would either increase or decrease the relationship between stress and motivation. Ninety-six athletes (Mage = 22.14, SD = 5.92) reported their level of self-compassion and evaluated their trainings and/or competitions over three weeks in terms of experienced stress, guilt, shame and subsequent training motivation on their smartphones. Multilevel analyses showed that SSDS was associated with more negative self-conscious emotions and reduced training motivation. Moreover, self-compassion weakened the effect of SSDS on shame and was not correlated with training motivation. We discuss the results with regard to sport psychology practice and future research.</p>

Amplifying Customer's Motivation Through Marketing Activities to Increase Purchase Intention in Social Commerce

<p><span>As information technology keeps evolving, social commerce has become a common alternative for Indonesians to purchase products online. Social commerce successfully facilitates social interactions between customers and business actors on one platform, combining the idea of social network sites and electronic commerce (e-commerce). The problem is that social commerce provides users with an effortless way to compare one product to another, leading to another challenge for businesses to compete with competitors. Hence, this research aims to identify how to amplify customers&rsquo; motivation when they see any product marketing activities in social commerce and how that motivation can increase their purchase intention towards the product. The method used in this study is Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) PLS with the purposive sampling method for primary data collection. The data were taken from social commerce users who have seen any product marketing labeled content. The primary data of 169<em> </em>respondents were collected from April to September 2024 from the people who live in Indonesia. The result shows that all of the seven hypotheses are accepted. </span></p>

Data from: Mapping movement, mood, motivation, and mentation in the subthalamic nucleus

The anatomical connections of the subthalamic nucleus (STN) have driven hypotheses about its functional anatomy, including the hypothesis that the precise anatomical location of STN deep brain stimulation (DBS) contributes to the variability of motor and non-motor responses across Parkinson disease (PD) patients. We previously tested that hypothesis using a three-dimensional (3D) statistical method to interpret the acute effects of unilateral DBS at each patient's clinically optimized DBS settings and active contact. Here we report a similar analysis from a new study in which DBS parameters were standardized and DBS locations were chosen blind to clinical response. In 74 individuals with PD and STN DBS, STN contacts were selected near the dorsal and ventral border of the STN contralateral to the more affected side of the body. Participants were tested off PD medications in each of 3 unilateral DBS conditions (ventral STN DBS, dorsal STN DBS and DBS off) for acute effects on mood, apathy, working memory, response inhibition and motor function. Voltage, frequency, and pulse width were standardized, and participants and raters were blind to condition. In a categorical analysis, both dorsal and ventral STN DBS improved mean motor function without affecting cognitive measures. Ventral STN DBS induced greater improvement in rigidity and anxiety than dorsal STN DBS. In the 3D analysis, contact location was significant for body hypokinesia, rigidity, and resting tremor, with the greatest improvement occurring with DBS in dorsal STN and zona incerta. The 3D results provide new, direct functional evidence for the anatomically-derived model of STN, in which motor function is best represented in dorsal STN. However, our data suggest that functional segregation between motor and non-motor areas of the STN is limited, since locations that induced improvements in motor function and mood overlapped substantially.

Data from: Motivations, success and cost of coral reef restoration

Coral reef restoration is an increasingly important part of tropical marine conservation. Information about what motivates coral reef restoration as well as its success and cost is not well understood but needed to inform restoration decisions. We systematically review and synthesise data from mostly scientific studies published in peer‐reviewed and grey literature on the motivations for coral reef restoration, the variables measured, outcomes reported, the cost per hectare of the restoration project, the survival of restored corals, the duration of the project and its overall spatial extent depending on the restoration technique employed. The main motivation to restore coral reefs for the projects assessed was to further our ecological knowledge and improve restoration techniques, with coral growth, productivity and survival being the main variables measured. The median project cost was 400,000 US$ ha‐1 (2010 US$), ranging from 6,000 US$ ha‐1 for the nursery phase of coral gardening to 4,000,000 US$ ha‐1 for substrate addition to build an artificial reef. Restoration projects were mostly of short duration (1‐2 years) and over small spatial extents (0.01 ha or 108 m2). Median reported survival of restored corals was 60.9%. Future research to survey practitioners who do not publish their discoveries would complement this work. Our findings and database provide critical data to inform future research in coral reef restoration.

Weightlifting during the COVID-19 pandemic—A transnational study regarding motivation, barriers, and coping of master athletes

<p></p><p>Sport has been heavily impacted by the pandemic for over a year with restrictions and closures of facilities. The main aims of this study are to identify motivation and barriers for an international group of Master weightlifters (ages 35 and up) and analyze age and gender differences in pandemic-related changes to physical activities. A sample of 1051 older athletes, 523 women and 528 men, aged from 35 to 88 years, from Australia, Canada, Europe, and the USA provided responses to an online survey conducted in June 2021. A confirmatory factor analysis was performed to examine age, gender, and regional differences about motivation, barriers, and pandemic impact on sport and physical activities. Participants showed enthusiasm for the opportunity to compete despite health challenges with increasing age but faced barriers due to access to training facilities and qualified coaches even before the pandemic. The oldest athletes had the greatest reduction in physical activities during the pandemic. Weightlifters had the opportunity to compete in virtual competitions and 44% would like to see some of these continued in the future, especially women. These findings highlight the benefits of competitive sports and may provide future directions in strength sports for organizations, sports clubs, and coaches.</p><p></p>

Survey: Motivation, capability and opportunity for food safety messages

<p><strong>Background</strong></p> <p>A significant part of foodborne infections is caused by food eaten at home, and food safety messages are given to help consumers mitigate risk. The World Health Organisation (WHO) "Five Keys to Safer Food", developed about 20 years ago has been used with success worldwide to provide general advice on how to prepare food safely.</p> <p><strong>Scope and Approach</strong></p> <p>In this commentary, we discuss how food safety messages could be updated using a holistic approach built on implementation science, considering new food consumption patterns and insights from natural and social sciences. A stepwise approach for developing and evaluating food safety messages, performed in the European project SafeConsume, is presented. The top pathogen-food combinations associated with foodborne disease in Europe combined with common consumer practices were used to identify behaviours potentially leading to illness. Food safety messages were suggested and evaluated for understanding as well as capability, opportunity and motivation in an expert survey.</p> <p><strong>Key Findings and Conclusions</strong></p> <p>Overall, the food safety topics prioritised overlapped with those from WHO. The opportunity and motivation for changing behaviour, (e.g. choose pasteurised egg) were identified as important restrictions for uptake of messages. Also, the large variation in basic terminology, such as "thoroughly cooked" is a challenge. Therefore, to enhance the capability, there is a need to be very specific, without excluding other safe alternatives or making lengthy <a>explanations</a>. The food safety messages suggested by the expert group were evaluated as more likely to the implemented among domestic cooks and resulting in safer practices than corresponding WHO messages.</p>
