IEEE Transactions on Computational Social Systems, 2019.</p> <p>The data contains tweetids of tweets (from Twitter) posted during (1) the 2015 Nepal earthquake, and (2) 2016 Italy earthquake. The tweets that inform about need and availability of various types of resources are identified.</p> <p>The dataset can be used for developing algorithms for microblog retrieval / classification, and for understanding social media activity in the aftermath of a disaster event.</p>
Strategies for Prioritizing Needs for Accelerated Construction after Hazard Events
<p>Corresponding data set for Tran-SET Project No. 18PPLSU04. Abstract of the final report is stated below for reference:</p> <p>"There is a need for rapid and responsive infrastructure repair and construction after natural disaster events such as hurricanes, wildfires, and tornadoes. These natural disasters often shut down basic infrastructure systems, as experienced recently in several Region 6 states as well as in other states around the country. Accelerated construction practices are often used in these situations to speed up the traditional, and often slow, project delivery process. However, after a natural disaster, several and different types of transportation infrastructure components are in need of inspection, rehabilitation or reconstruction, and transportation agencies are challenged with the task of prioritizing these accelerated projects. This study conducted an extensive literature review of current accelerated methods, infrastructure prioritization practices, and institutional barriers. Interviews with professionals from the transportation industry, including both private and public services, were conducted. Significant input from the railroad industry was used to compare private and public transportation systems responses after disasters. The results of this survey were used to quantify the importance of the accelerate methods and prioritization criteria, and which are the barriers to implement a prioritization model. Lastly, a decision support tool for prioritizing needs for accelerated construction after disaster events, specifically hurricanes and flooding, which commonly affect Region 6, was developed using the data collected."</p>

Exploring the needs of institutional stakeholders involved in the cultural heritage and social innovation sectors
<p>This data set was produced to gather information and lessons learnt from institutional stakeholders directly or indirectly involved in cultural approaches and/or promoting social integration of disadvantaged groups in order to understand what they need to facilitate participatory and inclusive initiatives. </p> <p>The data was gathered across Europe in early 2019 and consists of 90 surveys administered and 17 interviews. 90 surveys were administered to actors working at the intersection of cultural heritage and social innovation. The survey’s goal was to gather insights about the barriers these actors face in the implementation of participatory approaches and the measures adopted to overcome them. Semi-structured interviews (n=17) expanded upon the survey data and were carried out through an opportunistic sample of the survey respondents. The findings provided relevant insights in relation to the configuration of approaches for participatory projects, the main faced barriers, and the achieved level of impact.</p> <p>The original dataset has been processed by removing details and parts that might compromise the anonymity of the participant. </p> <p>This work is supported by the European Union’s Horizon2020 project CultureLabs: Recipes for Social Innovation, under Grant Agreement 770158. Dataset used for validation of the Danish 20-item Spiritual Needs Questionnaire.
<p>This material comprises the datasets to support the validation works of the Danish 20-item Spiritual Needs Questionnaire (DA-SpNQ-20). There is data on the questionnaire instruments: Spiritual Needs Questionnaire (danish translation of questionnaire will be published in Zenodo later) and the World Health Organization Well Being Index (WHO-5). All data has been fully anonymized and thus stripped of age, gender and religious/spiritual denominations. The sample is a convenience sample of (healthy) adult Danes with a large body of university students in the sample. Mean age of sample is 43,9 (sd: 16,3) and 73% were women.</p> <p>Information on the SpNQ is available at www.spiritualneeds.net</p> <p>Files included:</p> <p>(1) dataset of the full sample.</p> <p>(2) dataset of a randomly selected half (sample A) that was used for the exploratory factor analysis.</p> <p>(3) dataset of a randomly selected half (sample B) that was used for the confirmatory factor analysis.</p>
Data from: Comparisons of quantitative approaches for assessing microglial morphology reveal inconsistencies, ecological fallacy, and a need for standardization
<p>Microglia morphology is used as a measure of neuroinflammation and pathology, but different methods to quantify microglia morphology are frequently employed across neuroscience. For reliable inference, it is critical that microglial morphology is accurately quantified and that results can be easily interpreted and compared across studies. We applied five of the most commonly used ImageJ-based methods for quantifying the microglial morphological response to a stimulus to identical photomicrographs and isolated microglial cells, which allowed for direct comparisons of the specificity and reliability of each method.</p>

Plant species with larger extrafloral nectaries produce better quality nectar only when needed and favour interactions with best ant partners
<p>Few studies investigated the phenotypic plasticity of extrafloral nectary (EFN) functioning associated with indirect plant defense across species. Here, we experimentally investigate in three sympatric legume species the role of EFNs, hypothesizing that plant species with larger EFNs have higher induced nectar secretion after herbivory events, greater control over secretion, and are more likely to interact with more protective ant partners. We targeted 30 individuals of each legume species and estimated EFN size and activity in the field. We conducted field experiments to evaluate the phenotypic plasticity of nectar production after leaf damage and censused ant species feeding on EFNs. Plant species increased nectar after leaf damage but in different ways. Supporting our hypothesis, <em>C. duckeana</em>, with the largest EFNs, increased all nectar descriptors, taking its place as the most productive and intense post-herbivory induced response, attracting more dominant ants than the other plant species. The higher control over reward production in plant species with larger-sized EFN reflects an induction mechanism under damage that reduces costs and increases the potential benefits of indirect biotic defences. Together, these plant traits shape the patterns of ant attendance and defence against herbivores, possibly favouring the maintenance of plant protection mutualisms widespread in nature.</p>

Higher predation rate need not and did not lead to higher risk-induced trait responses in related zooplankton species
<p>Predators can directly affect prey populations both through predation (consumption of prey) and risk-induced trait responses (RITRs) that reduce predation risk but are often associated with a fitness cost. Thousands of studies make clear that RITRs (also termed anti-predator or defensive traits) including changes in behavior, morphology, and life history, are employed by numerous taxa across diverse ecological systems, and there is large variation in their magnitude. A natural goal is to elucidate the species and circumstances for which and to what magnitude RITRs are expected. A candidate hypothesis is that prey species that experience higher mortality from a predator will exhibit a higher RITR. This hypothesis is an intuitive extension of the fact that invulnerable animals are not expected to exhibit an RITR, while vulnerable species are. We present an example that clarifies why this relationship is not always expected and when it is expected. Other factors may influence the level of the RITR leading to the possibility that a positive relationship is not expected. We elucidate this problem using a mesocosm experiment with a fish-cladoceran system in which there is large variability in the predation rate on different cladoceran species. Results not only did not show a positive relationship but rather a negative trend between predation rate and the RITR. In fact, highly-preyed-upon taxa did not respond, while the least-preyed-upon taxa had the largest responses. These results clarify how the level of predation risk interacts with many factors to determine the RITR of prey.</p>
