Carbon loss due to grassland reclamation in the agro-pastoral ecotone of northern China
<p><span>The conversion of grasslands to cropland can significantly impact the terrestrial carbon cycle, yet the effects on soil organic carbon (SOC) are not well quantified due to a lack of large-scale sampling data. This study aims to quantify changes in SOC resulting from grassland reclamation in the agropastoral ecotone of northern China through paired sampling of 101 cropland plots and 101 adjacent grassland control plots. Results indicate that grassland reclamation led to an average 16.07% decrease in surface SOC content (0–10 cm). Over 80% of the study area experienced a loss in SOC, while less than 20% showed an increase. These findings underscore the significant impact of grassland reclamation on SOC depletion and highlight the importance of land management strategies to mitigate carbon loss in this region.</span></p>
MASCS 1.0: Synchronous atmospheric and oceanic data from a cross-shaped moored array in the northern South China Sea during 2014–2015
<p>This work presents a cross-shaped moored array dataset (MASCS 1.0) comprising five buoys and four moorings with synchronous atmospheric and oceanic data in the northern South China Sea during 2014–2015. The atmospheric data are observed by two meteorological instruments at the buoys. The oceanic data consist of sea surface waves measured using a wave recorder, temperature, and salinity from the surface to a depth of 400 m, and at 10 and 50 m above the ocean bottom using conductivity, temperature, and depth recorders. It also includes currents from the surface to a depth of 850 m measured using acoustic Doppler current profilers and measured at 10, 50, and 100 m above the floor using current meters. Additional measurements were taken for sea surface radiation, air visibility, chlorophyll, turbidity, and chromophoric dissolved organic matter at buoy 3, located at the center of the moored array. The data reveals air–sea interactions and oceanic processes in the upper and bottom ocean, especially the transition of the air–sea interface and ocean conditions from summer to winter monsoon and the effects of six tropical cyclones on the moored array. Multiscale processes were also recorded, such as air–sea fluxes, tides, internal waves, and low-frequency flows. The data are valuable and have many potential applications, including analyzing the phenomena and mechanisms of air–sea interactions and ocean dynamics and validating and improving numerical model simulations, data reanalysis, and assimilations.</p>
Magnetotelluric data set of the northern Songliao Block, NE China
<p>The study area covers 120,000 square kilometers in NE China. Field collection of MT data was carried out with MTU-5 instruments, manufactured by Phoenix Geophysics of Canada. This study used a total of 138 broadband MT sites. The signal acquisition time was less than one day at each site. The signal acquisition time was about 20 hours at each site. Each MT site measured 5 components, 3 magnetic field components and 2 mutually orthogonal horizontal electric field components, approximately 10 km site spacing along several lines.</p>
𝛅11B and B/Ca measurements of the modern and fossil Porites corals from the east coast Hainan Island in the northern South China Sea
<p>This datasets contain the 𝛅<sup>11</sup>B and B/Ca determinations of three modern <em>Porites</em> corals and four ancient <em>Porites</em> collected from the east coast of Hainan Island in the northern South China Sea. The measurements of skeletal boron isotopes were carried out with a MC-ICP-MS, and the B/Ca was determined by ICP-MS. </p>

Aridity and soil fertility, not species richness, interact to affect temporal stability along a large natural gradient in Northern China
<p><span>There is mounting evidence from experimental studies that drought and nutrient enrichment can interact to impact the biodiversity and productivity of terrestrial ecosystems. Whether such interactive effect influence plant diversity and the temporal stability of community productivity of natural ecosystems is unknown. To fill this knowledge gap, we combined a field survey of plant diversity and soil conditions with remote sensing temporal estimates of primary productivity in grasslands along a natural gradient in northern China. We found that aridity and soil ammonium (NH<sub>4</sub><sup>+</sup>-N) interacted to influence temporal stability of NDVI. That is, the relationship between ammonium and temporal stability of NDVI shifted from positive to negative due to increased </span><span>standard deviation</span> <span>of NDVI with increasing aridity. Species richness was not related to temporal stability because it influenced the mean and </span><span>standard deviation</span> <span>of NDVI proportionally. As a result, soil fertility outweighed the contribution of species richness to temporal stability. Our study demonstrates the synergistic effect of aridity and soil fertility, but not species richness, on temporal stability along a large natural gradient. Predicting how environmental drivers affect diversity and the stable provisioning of ecosystem services in real-world ecosystems therefore requires a better understanding of the complex interactions among environmental drivers.</span></p>
Population dynamics and seasonal migration patterns of Spodoptera exigua in northern China based on 11 years of monitoring data
<p>The beet armyworm, <em>Spodoptera exigua </em>(Hübner) is an important migratory pest worldwide that has caused serious economic losses in the main crop-producing areas of China. To effectively monitor and control this pest, it is necessary to investigate its interannual and seasonal migration patterns in northern China. In this study, we weekly monitored the population dynamics of <em>S. exigua</em> using sex pheromone traps in Shenyang, Liaoning Province from 2012 to 2022 and simulated the migration trajectories using the HYSPLIT model. Overall, the migration numbers varied significantly among years, with large migrations in 2018 and 2020 that resulted in a total catch of more than 2000 individuals. </p>
