Social-ecological dynamics of quarry restoration: a Flickr data analysis
<div> <div> <div> <p><span>With increasing urbanization and demand for construction materials, quarries have become central to the recovery of degraded landscapes into spaces that offer ecological, but also social benefits. While ecological restoration has long been investigated, integrated social-ecological restoration of post-mining landscapes remains underexplored. The overall aim of this study is to assess the perceptions of cultural ecosystem services and landscape features expressed in social media posts about quarries in Germany, Denmark, and the Czech Republic. We focus on concepts of cultural ecosystem services and landscape features to investigate the interactions between humans and restored ecosystems. Using a mixed-methods approach, we analyzed 1,660 geotagged photographs from 50 quarries across three regions: Berlin, Roskilde, and the Czech Karst. Flickr social media images were analyzed to elicit the richness of cultural ecosystem services (CES) and landscape features (LF), highlighting popular quarries and their social-ecological significance. Our results indicate that rehabilitated quarries exhibit higher CES richness than abandoned or operational ones, and that accessibility significantly influences public engagement. Our study demonstrates that once primarily industrial sites, quarries can evolve into vibrant social-ecological systems that provide diverse landscape features and cultural ecosystem services. It also points to the potential of social media data for designing restoration efforts from a social-ecological perspective. Such an approach provides insights into public perceptions of restored landscapes and may inform future restoration strategies. </span></p> <p> This dataset includes: (1) the review protocol, (2) a list of place names used for data collection on Flickr when posts were not geolocated, (3) data on landscape features and cultural ecosystem services identified in Flickr posts from 50 study quarries, (4) characteristics of the quarries, and (5) a shapefile of the quarry polygons.</p> <p> </p> <p> </p> </div> </div> </div>

Data from: Restoring marine ecosystems: spatial reef configuration triggers taxon-specific responses among early colonizers
<p>1. The longstanding debate in conservation biology on the importance of single large or several small (SLOSS) habitats for preserving biodiversity remains highly relevant, given the ongoing degradation and loss of natural habitats worldwide. Restoration efforts are often constrained by limited resources, and insights from SLOSS studies therefore have important implications if restoration efforts can be optimized by manipulating the spatial configuration of restored habitats. Yet, the relevance of SLOSS for habitat restoration remains largely unexplored.</p> <p>2. Here, we report the effects of spatial reef configuration on early colonization of marine organisms after restoring boulder reef habitats. Reefs were restored in single large (SL) and several small (SS) designs in the western Baltic Sea, where century-long boulder extraction has severely degraded large reef areas and likely exacerbated regional declines in commercially important gadoids (<i>Gadidae spp.</i>). We sampled the field sites using remote underwater video systems in a before-after control-impact (BACI) design and obtained probabilistic inferences on restoration and SLOSS effects from Bayesian hierarchical models.</p> <p>3. Probabilities of a positive restoration effect were high (>95%) for gadoids, labrids and demersal gobies, moderate (60-75%) for species richness and sand gobies, and low (<5%) for flatfish abundance. Notably, gadoid abundance increased 60-fold and 129-fold on average at SL and SS, respectively. The species composition at restored reefs deviated from control sites, mainly driven by large-bodied piscivores.</p> <p>4. Spatial reef configuration had the strongest effect on small-bodied mesopredators, including gobies, which were more abundant and driving a distinct species assemblage at SS. In addition to providing suitable conditions for reef species, results suggest that SS can also benefit soft-bottom taxa, possibly through a dispersed predator-mediated effect relative to SL. </p> <p><i>5. Synthesis and applications.</i> This study demonstrates that boulder reef restoration can strongly promote the abundance of exploited gadoids and is therefore a promising management tool to support top-down controls by predatory fishes in degraded marine systems. The higher abundance of mesopredators at SS reefs suggests that SLOSS could have long-term implications for trophic structure and resilience of restored habitats, and should therefore become an important facet within restoration strategies. </p>
Differences in bee community composition between restored and remnant prairies are more strongly linked to forb community differences than landscape differences
<p>1. Grassland restoration is an important tool for conserving bee biodiversity within agricultural landscapes. Restorations foster increases in local bee abundance and α-diversity, however, these measures are insufficient for understanding if remnant communities are being conserved. We compared native bee α-diversity, β-diversity, and community composition between restored and remnant prairies in Minnesota, USA. We then investigated two potential drivers of bee community dissimilarity between restored and remnant prairies: proportion of agricultural land surrounding a restoration and differences in floral community between restored and remnant prairies.</p> <p>2. We selected ten restored prairies that lie along a gradient of increasing agricultural land cover, ranging from 20–85% of surrounding land in agricultural production. We paired each restoration with a nearby prairie remnant and sampled bee and floral communities concurrently in each restoration-remnant pair. We quantified bee and forb α-diversity, community composition, β-diversity, and levels of dissimilarity between restoration-remnant pairs along the gradient of agricultural development. Additionally, we quantified differences in the community weighted mean between restored and remnant prairies for two bee traits, oligolecty and tongue length, to investigate how differences in floral community between restored and remnant prairies may influence bee community composition.</p> <p>3. While bee α-diversity between restored and remnant prairies was similar, bee composition between restorations and remnants were significantly different with restorations being more homogenous than remnants. Differences in bee community composition and β-diversity were not statisticlly related to agricultural landscapes or floral community dissimilarity, however, we found a significantly higher proportion of oligolectic bees in remnant prairies. This difference in oligolectic bees was likely related to the absence of important host plants in restorations<i>.</i></p> <p>4. <i>'Synthesis and application'</i>: Prairie restorations should seek to provide diverse floral resources that are of similar composition to remnant prairies. Specifically, providing important floral host plants for pollen specialist bees could improve restorations' ability to conserve prairie remnant bee communities.</p>
Active restoration fosters better recovery of tropical rainforest birds than natural regeneration in degraded forest fragments
<ol> <li>Ecological restoration has emerged as a key strategy for conserving tropical forests and habitat specialists, and monitoring faunal recovery using indicator taxa like birds can help assess restoration success. Few studies have examined, however, whether active restoration achieves better recovery of bird communities than natural regeneration, or how bird recovery relates to habitat affiliations of species in the community.</li> <li>In rainforests restored over the past two decades in a fragmented landscape (Western Ghats, India), we examined whether bird species richness and community composition recovery in 23 actively restored (AR) sites was significantly better than recovery in paired naturally regenerating (NR) sites, relative to 23 undisturbed benchmark (BM) rainforests. We measured 8 habitat variables and tested whether bird recovery tracked habitat recovery, whether rainforest and open-country birds showed contrasting patterns, and assessed species-level responses to restoration.</li> <li>We recorded 92 bird species in 460 point-count surveys. Rainforest bird species richness was highest in BM, intermediate in AR, and lowest in NR. Contrastingly, open-country bird species richness was least in BM, intermediate in AR, and highest in NR.</li> <li>Bird community composition varied significantly across treatment types with composition in AR in transition from NR to BM. Bird community dissimilarity between sites was positively related to dissimilarity in habitat structure and floristics, and geographic distance between sites. Variance partitioning indicated that structural and floristic dissimilarity explained 90% of the variation in community composition.</li> <li>Indicator species analysis revealed significant associations of 34 species with one or more treatment types. Species associated with BM and AR treatment types were all rainforest species, while only 38% of species associated with AR and NR treatment types were rainforest species.</li> <li> <em>Synthesis and applications</em>: We show that active restoration of degraded fragments benefits rainforest birds and reduces the infiltration of open-country birds, and highlight the importance of considering rainforest and open-country species separately. In human-modified tropical rainforest landscapes, active restoration of degraded fragments fosters partial recovery and complements protection of mature forests for bird conservation.</li> </ol>

Correlation of the kinetics of viral antigen and genomic RNA with restoration of normal cell homeostasis
<p>The main objective of the studies within COCID Work Package 6 is to understand basic mechanisms by which viral replication machineries are removed from cells after pharmacological interruption of viral replication using functional as well as imaging techniques, including soft X-ray tomography.</p> <p>In this document, we highlight the progress in establishing the HCV replication models (replicons), the antiviral treatment chosen to eliminate viral structures from the host cells and the correlation between elimination of the viral replication machinery and restoration of a normal host cell homeostasis, using markers of HCV-induced stress. These data are essential to frame the experimental setup chosen for the imaging process required in subsequent stps of the project.</p>

The relationship between plant diversity and facilitation during tropical dry forest restoration
<p>Restoration programs that promote the functioning of restored ecosystems are in urgent demand. Although several biodiversity and ecosystem functioning (BEF) experiments have demonstrated the importance of functional complementarity enhancing plant community performance, no BEF study has yet experimentally manipulated facilitation testing its contribution to how the complementarity effect modulates community performance.</p> <p>We built a restoration experiment manipulating diversity and facilitation in a tropical semiarid forest. We planted 4704 seedlings of 16 native tree species to assemble 147 experimental communities with 45 different compositions comprising 1, 2, 4, 8 or 16 species. Facilitation was included in the experimental design by creating a gradient of communities from low to high facilitation potential (based on prior research). We measured functional diversity and functional identity using species above and below-ground traits to investigate how they modulate the effects of species diversity and facilitation on leaf biomass production, and its additive partition biodiversity effects (NE, CE & SE).</p> <p>The joint influence of diversity and facilitation was tested separately for leaf biomass production and Net Biodiversity Effect using Linear Mixed Models (LMMs). We subsequently ran LMMs including functional diversity and functional identity. We hypothesised that facilitation would increase community productivity and functioning and that functional dispersion and functional identity related to above and below-ground traits would explain facilitation performance.</p> <p>Facilitation positively influenced leaf biomass production as predicted, but unexpectedly, neither of the functional traits were important for modulating the facilitation process. Positive values for Complementarity Effect (CE) showed that plants performed better in mixtures in comparison to monocultures. Selection Effect (SE) negative values, showed that species with below-average performance in monocultures, performed better in mixtures. Unexpectedly, CE did not increase as species diversity or facilitation increased. SE was influenced negatively by facilitation leading to a more equal distribution of biomass production between species in mixtures.</p> <p>Synthesis: Facilitation improves biomass production in restored communities and increases biomass equitability among plant species and thus ecosystem reliability. To improve restoration success, plant communities should be built using facilitating plants.</p>
A habitat connectivity reality check for fish physical habitat model results and decision making for river restoration
<ol> <li>Fish physical habitat models are a tool for guiding restoration efforts in lotic ecosystems but often they overestimate restoration outcomes because currently they do not incorporate habitat connectivity. This persistent issue can, in extreme cases, result in little or no improvement to fish populations after the restoration, wasting valuable conservation resources.</li> <li>We present a case study where practitioners applied a fish habitat model for multiple life history stages of gravel spawning fishes to a 52 kilometer stretch of the Iller River but did so at a microscale implementation (every 200 meters). This approach provided an opportunity to assess the connectivity of gravel spawning fishes to find suitable habitats for all life history stages and seasonal movements.</li> <li>We used the assessed habitat estimates (availability of distinct habitat types within the 200 m reaches) to calculate the minimum distance a fish would need to go as it hypothetically “grew up” from egg to full spawning adult. We call this technique a reality check as it results in a decisive understanding of which areas were ultimately necessary to fulfill the life cycle of gravel spawning fishes, which standard assessments do not show.</li> <li>Our results show that complete connectivity still require long movement distances for vulnerable life stages to find suitable habitat. This contradicts standard practice, as restoration schemes and decision making often assume that connectivity inherently leads to more fish production without added habitat restoration.</li> <li>We recommend practitioners should perform this habitat connectivity approach when assessments implement fish habitat suitability models at similar scales. As a result, decision makers can evaluate proposed restoration sites and measures more realistically.</li> </ol>
