Data from: Plant-herbivore interactions: silicon concentration in tussock sedges and population dynamics of root voles

1. It has been hypothesized that the induction of silicon (Si)-based plant defence in response to herbivore damage may engender rodent population cycles. Many studies have also considered accumulation of Si as a process controlled by geo-hydrological factors. 2. To test these ideas, we investigated the relationship between concentration of Si in fibrous tussock sedge (Carex appropinquata) and the population density of a major sedge consumer, the root vole (Microtus oeconomus), in field enclosures in natural habitat under a variety of natural water regimes and weather conditions. 3. We found that a high density of voles at the end of summer resulted in the immediate accumulation of Si by rhizomes, followed by accumulation of Si in leaves with a one-year lag time. The level of river flooding in the same year had an additional impact on Si concentration in rhizomes but did not affect silicification of leaves. 4. Overwinter changes in concentration of Si in sedges were influenced by fluctuations in ambient temperature and the depth of snow cover (multiple freeze-thaw cycles), thus affecting the quality of winter food available for voles. 5. Smaller voles had lower mortality during early winter than large voles, which seemed to be connected with changes in the quality of the autumn rather than the winter food base. Winter survival of voles was not associated with Si concentration in their faeces, however. 6. Our results suggest that changes in Si concentration in fibrous tussock sedge can be induced by changes in vole population density and are also additionally affected by the amount of flooding and weather conditions.

<p>Each file contains data which is similar to the one shown in Fig.3.b for different laser bandwidths: 001 and 002 - 0.078THz; 004 and 005 - 0.127THz; 007 and 009 - 0.223THz. The data files 001, 004, and 007 are the probe transmission changes as functions of the delay between one of the pumps and the probe in picoseconds (The other pump arrives a fixed time of 50ps before the probe). The data files 002, 005, and 009 are the same as 001, 004, and 007 but with the probe beam blocked. Please, see the paper for details.   </p>

Estimation of parasitic elements of silicon photomultipliers (SiPM)

<p>Project FleX-RAY employed photon counting capable photodiodes in order to capture light that was generated by the scintillation phenomenon, in plastic scintillating fibres. These special photodiodes are called Silicon Photomultipliers, or SiPMs. Electrical simulations were then carried out to evaluate different preamplifier architectures for SiPMs. For these simulations, we had to develop the electrical equivalent of an SiPM, however, many parameters that are necessary to develop an accurate model cannot be found in product datasheets or literature. This dataset contains electrical measurements and calculations that were conducted during the project, to estimate the values of various parasitic parameters of SiPMs available in the market.</p> <p>Specifically, the datasets contain Current vs Voltage (I-V) curves and Capacitance vs Electrical Conductance (Cp-G) curves that were used to extract the following parasitic parameters: quench resistance Rq, paralleled lumped capacitance Cm and conductance Gm. After the value of these parameters had been measured, capacitances Cq, Cd and Cg were mathematically derived.</p> <p>Two spreadsheets are included in this dataset:</p> <ol> <li>Spreadsheet titled "SiPM_I-V_curves.xlsx" contains measured Current vs Voltage (I-V) data, and derived Rq (quench resistance data), for the devices listed below.</li> <li>Spreadsheet titled "SiPMs_GvsCp.xls" contains the measured Conductance vs Parallel Capacitance (G-Cp) data, and derived Cq, Cd and Cg capacitance data, for the devices listed below.</li> </ol> <p>Devices under investigation: Hamamatsu SiPM models S12572-010, S12571-015, S13360-3075CS, S13360-3050CS, S13360-1375CS, S13360-1350CS and ON-semi SiPM models microFJ-30035, microFC-10035</p> <p>Measurement device(s)/board(s): Keysight Technologies 34401A Bench Digital Multimeter, Agilent 4294A Impedance analyzer, Generic bench-top power supplies</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>This work was financed by the European Union's Horizon 2020 program under grant agreement No. 899634.</p>

Interactions between silicon and alkaloid defences in endophyte-infected grasses and the consequences for a folivore

<p>1. Grasses have developed a wide range of morphological and physiological mechanisms to resist herbivory. For instance, they accumulate silicon (Si) in tissue, as physical defence, and associate symbiotically with foliar <i>Epichloë</i>-endophytes that provide chemical defence <i>via</i> antiherbivore alkaloids. Recent evidence showed that some <i>Epichloë</i>-endophytes increase foliar Si in forage grasses; however, it is unknown whether this impacts insect herbivores. Furthermore, while Si is primarily a physical defence, it also affects production of plant defensive secondary metabolites; Si supply might therefore affect <i>Epichloë</i>-alkaloids, although this remains untested.</p> <p>2. We grew endophyte-free (Nil) and <i>Epichloë</i>-infected tall fescue and perennial ryegrass in a factorial combination with or without Si supplementation, in the absence or presence of <i>Helicoverpa armigera</i>. <i>Epichloë</i>-endophyte strains were AR584 for tall fescue, and AR37, AR1 or Wild-type (WT) for perennial ryegrass. We assessed how Si supply and <i>Epichloë</i>-endophytes in interaction with herbivory affected foliar Si and mutualist-derived alkaloid concentrations. Subsequently, their effects on <i>H. armigera</i> relative growth rates (RGR) were evaluated. </p> <p>3. Endophytes generally increased Si concentrations in Si supplied plants.<b> </b>In tall fescue-AR584 and perennial ryegrass-AR37, endophytes increased constitutive (herbivore-free) and induced (herbivore-inoculated) Si concentrations by at least 25%; in contrast, in perennial ryegrass the AR1 endophyte only increased constitutive levels. Si supply did not affect alkaloids produced by AR584- or AR1/WT-endophytes; however, in the presence of herbivory, Si supply decreased the induction of alkaloids produced by AR37 endophytes by 33%. For tall fescue, Si supply reduced <i>H. armigera</i> RGR by at least 76%, regardless of endophytic status, whereas, endophyte-alkaloids played a secondary role only reducing herbivore growth in the absence of Si supply. Conversely, in perennial ryegrass both Si and endophyte-alkaloids (regardless of Si supply) reduced herbivore RGR although not synergised. </p> <p>4. Novel interactions between constitutive and induced Si- and alkaloid-based antiherbivore defences in grasses were observed. Overall, Si had a greater effect on the folivore than endophytes in both grasses. Endophyte-defences contributed more to herbivore resistance in perennial ryegrass than tall fescue. We demonstrate that Si and endophytes were not antagonistic and highlight that the protective nature of their interaction varies with the grass-endophyte species tested.</p>

Dataset for: Tomographic Volumetric Additive Manufacturing of Silicon Oxycarbide Ceramics

<p>Ceramics are highly technical materials with properties of interest for multiple industries. Precisely because of their high chemical, thermal, and mechanical resistance, ceramics are difficult to mold into complex shapes. A possibility to make convoluted ceramic parts is to use preceramic polymers (PCP) in liquid form. The PCP resin is first solidified in a desired geometry and then transformed into ceramic compounds through a pyrolysis step that preserves the shape. Light-based additive manufacturing (AM) is a promising route to achieve solidification of the PCP resin. Different approaches, such as stereolithography, have already been proposed but they all rely on a layer-by-layer printing process which sets limitations on the printing speed and object geometry.<br> Here, we report on the fabrication of complex 3D centimeter-scale ceramic parts by using tomographic volumetric printing which is fast, high resolution and offers a lot of freedom in terms of geometrical design compared to state-of-the-art AM techniques. First, we formulated a photosensitive preceramic resin that was solidified by projecting light patterns from multiple angles. Then, the obtained 3D printed parts were converted into ceramics by pyrolysis. We demonstrate the strength of this approach through the fabrication of dense microcomponents exhibiting overhangs and hollow geometries without the need of supporting structures, and characterize their resistance to high heat and harsh chemical treatments.</p>
