Soil grid data for agricultural fields in Spain for STEROPES (EJP Soil) project (ECe, texture, soil organic carbon, pH)

Soil data collected in an agricultural area with vegetable crops in Spain (Campo de Cartagena). The data refers to soil properties of 141 soil samples collected at a depth of 0-10 cm, considering a regular sampling grid, in different commercial fields with varying soil salinity. The samples were collected at a period when the soil was bare, during two consecutive summers, following the harvest of the annual crops, and pictures of the soil surface were taken for eventual correction of corresponding remote sensing imaging. The data includes: soil organic carbon (SOC) (Walkley-Black method), soil water content, electric conductivity of the saturated soil paste (ECe), EC1:5, soil texture, stone content and pH1:2.5.

The data may be representative of the soil conditions of the area, which is an intensive productive agricultural low land, potentially prone to the development of soil salinity as a result of the rise of saline groundwater and/or irrigation. The data can be used to establish relations between soil salinity (ECe) and other soil properties as well as build prediction models of the soil properties from remote sensing namely, for developing models for SOC prediction under the STEROPES project (WP3, WP5 and WP6).The aim of the collected dataset was to be able to analyze the influence of soil salinity in SOC prediction from remote sensing.

Data in the form of MS Excel file (xlsx).

Self-propagation of reactive Al/Ni multilayers with textured surface topography

Reactive multilayer systems (RMS) were fabricated by magnetron sputtering deposition of Al and Ni nanolayers on a copper substrate with textured surface topography, the copper substrate was subsequently removed in order to obtain free-standing RMS. The morphology of the substrate surface impacted the microstructure of the produced RMS, therefore the RMS have a textured surface. The samples were papered with a surface texture in different orientations (0°, 45°, and 90°). Besides RMS with the same characteristics were prepared on Si wafer (flat surface) in order to compare the propagation behavior of the RMS with a textured surface and RMS with a relatively flat surface. During the ignition test, the propagation front was recorded by a High-Speed camera with a resolution of 50,000 fps. In the videos, it is possible to observe the effect of the textured surface of the RMS on the propagation front of the reaction.

Data from: First application of dental microwear texture analysis to infer theropod feeding ecology

Theropods were the dominating apex predators in most Jurassic and Cretaceous terrestrial ecosystems. Their feeding ecology has always been of great interest, and new computational methods have yielded more detailed reconstructions of differences in theropod feedings behaviour. Many approaches however rely on well-preserved skulls. Dental microwear texture analysis (DMTA) is potentially applicable to isolated teeth, and here employed for the first time to investigate dietary ecology of theropods. In particular, we test whether tyrannosaurids show DMT associated with more hard-object feeding than compared to Allosaurus – which would be a sign for higher levels of osteophagy, as has often been suggested. We find no significant difference in complexity and roughness of enamel surfaces between Herrerasaurus, Allosaurus, and tyrannosaurids, which conflicts with inferences of more frequent osteophagic behaviour in Tyrannosaurus as compared to other theropods. Orientation of wear features reveals a more pronounced bi-directional puncture-and-pull feeding mode in Allosaurus than in tyrannosaurids. Our results further indicate ontogenetic niche shift in theropods and crocodylians, significantly larger height parameters in juvenile theropods might indicate frequent scavenging, resulting in more bone-tooth contact during feeding. Overall, DMTA is found to be very similar between theropods and extant large, broad-snouted crocodylians and shows great similarity in feeding ecology of theropod apex predators throughout the Mesozoic.

Plant litter chemistry controls coarse-textured soil carbon dynamics

1. As soils store more carbon (C) than the Earth's atmosphere and terrestrial biomass together, the balance between soil C uptake in the form of soil organic matter and release as CO2 upon its decomposition is a critical determinant in the global C cycle regulating our planet's climate. Although plant litter is the predominant source of C fueling both soil C build-up and losses, the issue of how litter chemistry influences this balance remains unresolved.

2. As a contribution to solving that issue, we traced the fate of C during near-complete decomposition of 13C-labelled leaf and root litters from 12 plant species in a coarse-textured soil. We separated the soil organic carbon (SOC) into mineral-associated organic matter (MAOM) and particulate organic matter (POM) pools, and investigated how 14 litter chemical traits affected novel SOC formation and native SOC mineralization (i.e., the priming effect) in these soil fractions.

3. We observed an overall net increase in SOC due to the addition of litter, which was stronger for root than for leaf litters. The presumed stable MAOM-C pool underwent both substantial stabilization and mineralization, whereas the presumably less stable POM-C pool showed substantial stabilization and reduced mineralization. Overall, the initial increase in soil C mineralization was fully counterbalanced by a later decrease in native soil C mineralization. POM-C formation as well as MAOM-C formation and mineralization were positively related to the initial litter lignin concentration and negatively to that of the nitrogen leachates, whereas the opposite was observed for POM-C mineralization.

4. Synthesis. Our results highlight the importance of litter chemical traits for SOC formation, and stabilization, destabilization, and mineralization. In our coarse-textured soil, the amount of MAOM-C did not change despite large C fluxes through this pool. The litter chemical traits that drove these processes differed from those frequently reported for fine-textured soils far from mineral-associated C saturation. To account for these discrepancies, we propose an integrative perspective in which litter quality and soil texture interactively control soil C fluxes by modulating several SOC stabilization and destabilization mechanisms. Irrespective, our results open new critical perspectives for managing soil C pools globally.
