Sediment accumulation rate data aggregated from publications describing research conducted in South Florida on coastal wetlands prior to 2022
Wetland sediment accumulation rate data were harvested from publications describing research conducted in the Southeast Saline Everglades, Northeast Florida Bay, the Lower Florida Keys, Southwest Everglades National Park, Ten Thousand Island National Wildlife Refuge, and Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve. The data were organized into three categories based on the method by which they were calculated: lump sum, core section interval, Sediment Elevation Table Marker Horizon. The data were assembled by Dr. Randall W. Parkinson as part of his research on the resiliency of coastal wetlands to accelerating sea-level rise.

Data from: Accumulation curves of environmental DNA sequences predict coastal fish diversity in the Coral Triangle
Environmental DNA (eDNA) has the potential to provide more comprehensive biodiversity assessments particularly for vertebrates in species-rich regions. Yet, this method requires the completeness of a reference database, i.e. a list of DNA sequences attached to each species, which is never met. As an alternative, a diversity of Operational Taxonomic Units (OTUs) can be extracted from eDNA metabarcoding. However, the extent to which the diversity of OTUs provided by a limited eDNA sampling effort can predict regional species diversity is unknown. Here, by modelling OTU accumulation curves of eDNA seawater samples across the Coral Triangle, we obtained an asymptote reaching 1,531 fish OTUs while 1,611 fish species are recorded in the region. Besides, we also accurately predict (R² = 0.92) the distribution of species richness among fish families from OTU-based asymptotes. Thus, the multi-model framework of OTU accumulation curves extends the use of eDNA metabarcoding in ecology, biogeography and conservation.
Displacement accumulation and sampling of paleoearthquakes on active normal faults of Crete in the eastern Mediterranean
<p>The Table S1 (uploaded separately) presents fault data and calculated values of earthquake parameters that underpin the interpretations and conclusions presented in Nicol et al. (G3, submitted June 20, 2020). The Locations of each fault are shown in Figure 2 of the main manuscript.</p> <p>In detail: The Table S1 summarises the attributes on all active faults studied on Crete. Single Event Displacement (SED), Recurrence Interval (RI), Moment Magnitude (M<sub>w</sub>) and number of paeoearthquakes have been estimated for each fault using topographic fault lengths and Quaternary displacement rates in conjunction with the Wesnousky (2008) equations (see table footnote for equations used to calculate SED and Mw). Mw calculated using Wesnously (2008) equations are unconstrained at lengths < 15.5 km. Note that the short-term (e.g. the post-glacial period) displacement rates for the Lentas (ID=43) and South Central Crete (ID=44) faults derive from time periods of c. 50 kyr and 125 kyr, respectively (from Gallen et al., 2014). Nevertheless, the estimated number of events on these two faults correspond to the post-glacial period (16.5 kyr). Table S1 presents uncertainties of +40% and -20% for maximum displacements derived from topography. Here we are conservative and have allowed larger errors for the maximum fault displacements to account for greater errors associated with erosion. The calculated earthquake recurrence interval (RI) in Table S1 derives from SED/Quaternary displacement rate.</p>

Data from: Biogenic silica accumulation varies across tussock tundra plant functional type
1. Silica (SiO2) accumulation by terrestrial vegetation is an important component of the biological silica cycle because it improves overall plant fitness and influences export rates of silica from terrestrial to marine systems. However, most research on silica in plants has focused on agricultural and forested ecosystems, and knowledge of terrestrial silica cycling in the Arctic, as well as the potential impacts of climate change on the silica cycle is severely lacking. 2. We quantified biogenic silica (BSi) accumulation in above and belowground portions of three moist acidic tundra (MAT) sites spanning a 300 km latitudinal gradient in central and northern Alaska, USA. We also examined plant silica accumulation across three main tundra types found in the Arctic (MAT, moist non-acidic tundra (MNT), and wet sedge tundra (WST)). 3. BSi concentrations in live Eriophorum vaginatum, a tussock-forming sedge that is the foundation species of tussock tundra, were not significantly (p<0.05) different across the three main sites. Concentrations of BSi in live aboveground tissue were highest in the graminoid species (0.55 ± 0.07 % BSi in sedges from WST, and 0.27 ± 0.01% in E. vaginatum across the three MAT sites). Both inter-tussock tundra species and shrubs contained substantially lower BSi concentrations than E. vaginatum. 4. Our results have implications for how shifts in vegetation cover associated with climatic warming may alter silica storage in tussock tundra vegetation. Our calculations suggest that shrub expansion via warming will increase BSi storage in Arctic land plants due to the higher biomass associated with shrub tundra, whereas conversion of tussock tundra to WST via permafrost thaw would produce the opposite effect in the terrestrial plant BSi pool. Such changes in the size of the terrestrial vegetation silica reservoir could have direct consequences for the rates and timing of silica delivery to receiving waters in the Arctic.
Supplementary material for: Phylogenetic biodiversity metrics should account for both accumulation and attrition of evolutionary heritage
<p>Phylogenetic metrics are essential tools used in the study of ecology, evolution and conservation. Phylogenetic diversity (PD) in particular is one of the most prominent measures of biodiversity, and is based on the idea that biological features accumulate along the edges of phylogenetic trees that are summed. We argue that PD and many other phylogenetic biodiversity metrics fail to capture an essential process that we term attrition. Attrition is the gradual loss of features and other sources of variety through causes other than extinction. Here we introduce `EvoHeritage', a generalisation of PD that is founded on the joint processes of accumulation and attrition of features. We argue that whilst PD measures evolutionary history, EvoHeritage is required to capture a more pertinent subset of evolutionary history including only components that have survived attrition. We show that EvoHeritage is not the same as PD on a tree with scaled edges; instead, accumulation and attrition interact in a more complex non-monophyletic way that cannot be captured by edge lengths alone. This leads us to speculate that the one-dimensional edge lengths of classic trees may be insufficiently flexible to capture the nuances of evolutionary processes. We derive a measure of EvoHeritage and show that it elegantly reproduces species richness and PD at opposite ends of a continuum based on the intensity of attrition. We demonstrate the utility of EvoHeritage in ecology as a predictor of community productivity compared with species richness and PD. We also show how EvoHeritage can quantify living fossils and resolve their associated controversy. We suggest how the existing calculus of PD-based metrics and other phylogenetic biodiversity metrics can and should be recast in terms of EvoHeritage accumulation and attrition.</p>
