OLAF, Open Library of Affective Foods: A tool to investigate the emotional impact of food in adolescents

<p>The Open Library of Affective Foods (OLAF) is a set of original food pictures created to reliably select food pictures based on the emotions they prompt, as indicated by affective ratings of valence, arousal, and&nbsp;dominance and by an additional food craving scale. OLAF images were designed to allow simultaneous use with affective images from the International Affective Picture System (IAPS), which is a well-known instrument to investigate emotional reactions in the laboratory. The ultimate goal of the OLAF is to contribute to understanding how food is emotionally processed in healthy individuals and in patients who suffer from&nbsp;eating and weight-related disorders.</p> <p>The present normative data, which was based on a large sample of an adolescent population, indicate that when viewing affective non-food IAPS images, valence, arousal, and dominance ratings were in line with expected patterns based on previous emotion research. Moreover, when viewing food pictures, affective and food craving ratings were consistent with research on food cue processing. As a whole, the data&nbsp;supported the methodological and theoretical reliability of the OLAF ratings, therefore providing researchers with a standardized tool to reliably investigate the emotional and motivational significance of food.</p>

Risky sexual behaviours and utilization of HIV testing services among the adolescent girls and young women aged between 15-24 years in Kibra Sub County, Nairobi County, Kenya

<p><strong>Introduction: </strong>HIV remains a significant global health challenge, disproportionately affecting adolescent girls and young women (AGYW). HIV testing is crucial in controlling the infection and reducing its prevalence. Understanding risky sexual behaviors among AGYW is pivotal in aligning prevention interventions. Despite global prevention efforts, testing gaps persist among AGYW, linked to risky sexual behavior (RSB). This study explores the association between these behaviors and HIV testing utilization among AGYW (aged 15-24) in Kibra Sub County, Nairobi.</p> <p><strong>Methods: </strong>A cross-sectional study sampled 379 AGYW from three wards in Kibra Sub County in Nairobi County. To be an eligible participant, one must have been a resident for at least one year before the time of the study and aged between 15-24 years, employing standardized structured interviewer-administered questionnaires and statistical analyses. Results were analyzed using Chi-square tests and logistic regression. Data was collected between June to July 2023.</p> <p><strong>Results: </strong>Overall, HIV testing prevalence was 60.7% (n=230). Those aged 20-24 were 71.3% (n=164), with secondary education were 63.5% (n=146) and married 28.7% (66) were more likely to undergo testing. Participants engaging in risky behaviors such as lack of condom use (3.96 times more likely), experiencing gender-based violence (4.65 times more likely), or contracting STIs (2.85 times more likely) had higher odds of seeking HIV testing services.</p> <p><strong>Conclusion: </strong>This study establishes a clear link between risky sexual behaviors and HIV testing among AGYW, with a 60.7% testing prevalence; however, gaps still exist. Efforts to enhance testing rates are vital. Interventions should align with acceptable methods, focusing on this high-risk group to ensure effective HIV care and prevention.</p>

Intervention fidelity and factors affecting the process of a mobile phone text messaging intervention among adolescents living with HIV: A convergent mixed methods study in southern Ethiopia

<p><em>Objective:</em> To assess the intervention fidelity and explore contextual factors affecting the process of a mobile phone text messaging intervention in improving adherence to and retention in care among adolescents living with HIV, their families, and their healthcare providers in southern Ethiopia.</p> <p><em>Design:</em> A convergent mixed-methods design guided by the process evaluation theoretical framework and the RE-AIM framework was used alongside a randomised controlled trial to examine the fidelity and explore the experiences of participants in the intervention.</p> <p><em>Setting:</em> Six hospitals and five health centres providing HIV treatment and care to adolescents in five zones in southern Ethiopia. Participants: adolescents (aged 10–19), their families and their healthcare providers.</p> <p><em>Intervention:</em> Mobile phone text messages daily for 6 months or standard care (control). Results: 306 participants were enrolled in the process evaluation. Among the intervention participants (N =153), 171 (55.9%) of whom were men, most resided in an urban area 225 (73.5%), and participants had a mean age of 15 (2.62). The overall experiences of implementing the text messages reminder intervention were described as helpful in terms of treatment support for adherence but had room for improvement. During the study, 30,700 text messages were sent, and fidelity was high, with 99.4% successfully receiving text messages during the intervention. Barriers such as failed text messages delivery, limitations in phone ownership, and technical limitations affected fidelity. Technical challenges can hinder maintenance, but a belief in the future of digital communication permeates the experiences of the text messages reminders.</p> <p><em>Conclusions: </em>Overall fidelity was high, and participants' overall experiences of mobile phone text messages were expressed as helpful. Contextual factors, such as local telecommunications networks and local electric power, as well as technical and individual factors must be considered when planning future interventions.</p>

Data from: Changes in brain structure and function following exposure to oral LSD during adolescence: A multimodal MRI study

<p><em>Background</em>: LSD  is a hallucinogen with complex neurobiological and behavioral effects.  Underlying these effects are changes in brain neuroplasticity. This is the first study to follow the developmental changes in brain structure and function following LSD exposure in periadolescence.  We hypothesized LSD given during a time of heightened neuroplasticity, particularly in the forebrain, would affect cognitive and emotional behavior and the associated underlying neuroanatomy and neurocircuitry.   </p> <p><em>Methods:</em> Female and male mice were given vehicle, single, or multiple treatments of 3.3 µg of LSD by oral gavage starting on postnatal day 51. Between postnatal days 90-120 mice were imaged and tested for cognitive and motor behavior. MRI data from voxel-based morphometry, diffusion weighted imaging, and BOLD resting state functional connectivity were registered to a mouse 3D MRI atlas with 139 brain regions providing site-specific differences in global brain structure and functional connectivity between experimental groups.</p> <p><em>Results:</em> Motor behavior and cognitive performance were unaffected by periadolescent exposure to LSD. Differences across experimental groups in brain volume for any of the 139 brain areas were few in number and not focused on any specific brain region. Multiple exposures to LSD significantly altered gray matter microarchitecture across much of the brain. These changes were primary associated with the thalamus, sensory and motor cortices, and basal ganglia. The forebrain olfactory system and prefrontal cortex and hindbrain cerebellum and brainstem were unaffected. The functional connectivity between forebrain white matter tracts and sensorimotor cortices and hippocampus was reduced with multidose LSD exposure.</p> <p><em>Conclusion:</em> Does early exposure to LSD in periadolescence have lasting effects on brain development? There was no evidence of LSD having consequential effects on cognitive or motor behavior when animal were evaluated as young adults 90-120 days of age.   Neither were there any differences in the volume of specific brain areas between experimental conditions. The pronounced changes in indices of anisotropy across much of the brain would suggest altered gray matter microarchitecture and neuroplasticity. The reduction in connectivity in forebrain white matter tracts with multidose LSD and consolidation around sensorimotor and hippocampal brain areas requires a battery of tests to understand the consequences of these changes on behavior.</p>

SmartLife smart clothing gamification to promote energy-related behaviours among adolescents

<p>Inactivity and high sedentary behavior among adolescents are main societal problems. Unhealthy lifestyles place a large burden on society and promoting healthy lifestyles is thus key for health, wellness and economic prosperity. These non-communicable diseases and unhealthy lifestyles furthermore occur more often among lower socio-economic groups, which indicates a need for healthy lifestyle promotion programs to help reduce health inequalities and improve social inclusion. The SmartLife project aims to create a mobile game that requires lower body movement, and is personalized by physiological feedback measured by smart textiles. Personalization via smart textiles can present a game challenge achievable for the current fitness level of the player and can adjust this based on activity levels during game play. This approach can improve current exergames to achieve a higher level of intensity in physical activity, needed to create a health impact, and can do so considering what is achievable for the person and hence reduce drop-out and injury risks.</p>

How physical activity opportunities seized by adolescents differ between Europe and the Pacific Islands: the example of France and New Caledonia

<p><strong><span>Background</span></strong></p> <p><span>France (FR) and New Caledonia (NC) are both French territories, one in Western Europe, the other as part of the Pacific <a name="_Hlk172132305"></a>Island Countries and Territories (PICTs). Despite schooling in similar educational systems, FR and NC adolescents develop distinct relationships with physical activity, which is influenced by the geographical-cultural and symbolic structures of their respective societies. This study explored the distribution of physical activity according to geographical culture and opportunity-temporal dimensions.</span></p> <p><strong><span>Methods</span></strong></p> <p><span>Participants were randomly selected, with individual (boys vs. girls), spatial (rural vs. urban), and geographical (FR vs. NC) stratifications. Accelerometers and daily logbooks were used to measure the physical activity intensity and opportunities during the week.</span></p> <p><strong><span>Results</span></strong></p> <p><span>A total of 156 participants were included in this study. A significant effect was found in moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) intensity with the geographical-cultural dimension; participants living in FR were more likely to engage in MVPA, especially in five opportunities: school, supervised leisure, home, school breaks, and transport. For both FR and NC adolescents, physical education lessons had the highest MVPA.</span></p> <p><strong><span>Conclusion</span></strong></p> <p><span>This study showed that MVPA differed in the same national educational system according to geographical culture. Physical education lessons could catch the challenge of an &ldquo;opportunity education&rdquo; (opportunities are defined as temporal invitations to engage in PA) by opening the door to two particular opportunities: supervised leisure and active transport.</span></p>
