BAMS map: 2023 Canadian forest burned area dataset

<p><span>The BAMS map is a 2023 Canadian forest burned area dataset with a 10-meter resolution. It uses an unsigned integer data type, where a pixel value of 1 represents burned forest, while 0 indicates unburned areas, non-forest, or no data.</span> <span>The map is provided in the WGS 1984 coordinate system (EPSG:4326), covering the region from 145&deg;W to 50&deg;W longitude and from 40&deg;N to 85&deg;N latitude.</span></p>

BurnCare Physiology Data: Burn with Resuscitation and Escharotomy

<p>A standard male patient with burns from 20-40% TBSA (incrementing at 5%) were simulated through 24 hours with&nbsp;intervention and state files were generated every hour. In these resuscitation protocols, we opt to use only lactated ringers, and no colloid compounds.&nbsp;The data&nbsp;includes a log and csv results file for each simulation. The&nbsp;&quot;golden path&quot; of treatment starts the resuscitation pathway with fluids being given at a rate of 10xTBSA (then titrated up or down each hour based on urine output). The naming structure for each state consists of tbsa, simulation time, current ringers lactate infusion rate, and colloid infusion rate (for future treatment protocols).</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>Additionally, we include checks on the hour for compartment syndrome and relieve it with an escharotomy if one is present.&nbsp;</p>

Water level data from the Tarland Burn, Aberdeenshire, Scotland (2013-2022)

<p>Water level was&nbsp;recorded, in&nbsp;hourly intervals, at four locations on the Tarland Burn, &nbsp;Aberdeenshire, Scotland between 2013 and 2022.&nbsp;&nbsp;Measurements were made using pressure transducers and logging equipment supplied by Campbell Scientific. Rating curves&nbsp;have also been derived using a Valeport electromagnetic flow meter (801 model), or ADCP &quot;boat&quot; at higher water level. This data is provided so that level data can be converted to flow data using stage discharge relationships. Station latitude and longitude are provided. Blank cells in the data sheets are due to instrument&nbsp;failure or temporary loss of power.</p> <p>This work has been funded by the Scottish Government as part of the strategic research programme and provides empirical data which&nbsp;underpins&nbsp;research on natural flood management, water quality, and biodiversity.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p>

Effects of nurse shrubs and biochar on planted conifer seedling survival and growth in a high-severity burn patch in New Mexico, USA

<p>The synergistic effects of widespread high-severity wildfire and anthropogenic climate change are driving large-scale vegetation conversion. In the southwestern United States, areas that were once dominated by conifer forests are now shrub- or grasslands after high-severity wildfire, an ecosystem conversion that could be permanent without human intervention. Yet, the reforestation of these landscapes is rarely successful, with a mean planted seedling survival of just 25 %. Given these low rates, we carried out a planting experiment to quantify the impacts of biochar as a soil amendment and shrubs as nurse plants on planted conifer seedling survival and growth following high-severity wildfire. We planted 1200 seedlings of three species (<em>Pinus</em> <em>ponderosa</em>, <em>P. strobiformis</em>, and <em>Pseudotsuga</em> <em>menziesii</em>) in a 2-ha area within the footprint of the Las Conchas fire in New Mexico, USA. We used four treatments: under shrubs, or in the open and with or without biochar in a full-factorial design. We found that planting tree seedlings underneath shrubs increased tree seedling survival by 46 % after 3 years, with some marginal evidence that shrubs inhibited seedling diameter growth (mean <em>R<sup>2</sup></em> = 0.08). The addition of biochar increased seedling survival by 11 % but had no effect on seedling growth. Our study suggests that planted seedling survival in post-wildfire areas can be increased by planting under shrubs in soil amended with biochar. The widespread adoption of these methods may improve the success rates of post-wildfire reforestation efforts in semi-arid areas, regaining some of the ecosystem services lost to high-severity wildfire.</p>

GloCAB: Global Cropland Area Burned

<p>Please note this dataset is undergoing peer review and may be subject to changes.&nbsp;</p> <p>The Global Cropland Area Burned (GloCAB) dataset represents the first attempt at a global cropland-focused burned area product. The dataset provides monthly, cropland burned area files at 0.25-degree spatial resolution from July 2002 - December 2020 for our upper (high) and lower (low) estimates. The data&nbsp;is provided in annual GeoTIFF stacks, where the 2002&nbsp;tiff file only contains 6 layers (July - December), compared to 12 layers for 2003 - 2020 (January - December).&nbsp;</p> <p>Please refer to the readme file for more details about the dataset.&nbsp;</p> <p>&nbsp;</p>

Moderate Spatial Resolution Burned Area Atlas for the Mau Forest Reserve in Kenya (2012 - 2017)

<p>This dataset contains moderate spatial resolution annual burned area records over the Mau Forest Reserve in Kenya. The dataset was derived from VIIRS Active Fire Detections (AFDs) and Landsat 7 &amp; 8 Atmospherically Corrected Surface Reflectance, applying the ST-DBSCAN (Spatio-Temporal Density-Based Spatial Clustering of Applications with Noise) algorithm and the differenced Normalized Burn Ratio (dNBR) for burned area identification.</p> <p>Please consider that the dataset is still subject to revision to address inaccuracies associated with the spatial extent of derived burned areas.</p> <p>Further documentation and related resources can be found at:&nbsp;https://github.com/StefMeh/Burned-Area-Estimation.git</p>
