ONERA copper TEEY measurements with various surface state and incidence angle

Data from: Replicate divergence between and within sounds in a marine fish: the copper rockfish (Sebastes caurinus)
The evolution of population structure in marine organisms and its relevance to conservation has recently received increasing attention. We tested the degree of genetic subdivision among ten populations of copper rockfish (Sebastes caurinus) representing paired samples of outer coast and the heads of five replicate sounds on the west coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia using 17 microsatellite DNA loci. Overall, subdivision (FST) was low (FST = 0.031), but consistently higher between paired coast and head of inlet sites (mean FST = 0.047) compared to among five coast sites (mean FST = -0.001) or among the five head of inlet sites (mean FST = 0.026). Heterozygosity, allelic richness, and estimates of effective population size were also consistently lower in head of inlet sites than in coast sites. Bayesian analysis of population structure identified two genetic groups across all samples, a single genetic group amongst only coast samples, two genetic groups amongst head of inlet samples, and two genetic groups within each sound analysed separately. Head of inlet copper rockfish were also consistently shorter with lower condition factors, and grew more slowly than fish collected from coast sites. Our results implicate coast- head of inlet habitat transitions in driving the evolution of population structure, likely resulting from reduced physical connectivity and selection against immigrants in contrasting environments. Coast sites appear to be well served by existing marine protected areas. By contrast, head of inlet sites may require more specific local conservation measures as they appear to be less well connected to adjacent coast sites as well as to each other.

<p>Premise of the study: Plants grown at high densities show increased tolerance to heavy metals for reasons that are not clear. A potential explanation is the release of citrate by plant roots, which binds metals and prevents uptake. Thus, pooled exudates at high plant densities could increase tolerance. We tested this exclusion facilitation hypothesis using mutants of <em>Arabidopsis thaliana </em>defective in citrate exudation.</p> <p>Methods: Wild type <em>Arabidopsis</em> and two allelic mutants for the <em>Ferric Reductase Defective 3</em> (<em>FRD3</em>) gene were grown at four densities and watered with copper sulfate at four concentrations. Plants were harvested before bolting and dried. Shoot biomass was measured, and shoot material and soil were digested in nitric acid. Copper contents were determined by atomic absorption.</p> <p>Key results: In the highest copper treatment, density-dependent reduction in toxicity was observed in the wild type but not in <em>FRD3</em> mutants. For both mutants, copper concentrations per gram biomass were up to seven times higher thanwild type plants, depending on density and copper treatment. In all genotypes, total copper accumulation was greater at higher plant densities. Plant size variation increased with density and copper treatment because of heterogeneous distribution of copper throughout the soil.</p> <p>Conclusions: These results support the hypothesis that citrate exudation is responsible for density-dependent reductions in toxicity of metals. Density-dependent copper uptake and growth in contaminated soils underscores the importance of density in ecotoxicological testing. In soils with a heterogenous distribution of contaminants, competition for non-toxic soil regions may drive size hierarchies and determine competitive outcomes. </p>

Theoretical insights into the antiradical activity and copper-catalyzed oxidative damage of mexidol in the physiological environment

Royal Society Open Science. 2021.</p> <p>In this study, the hydroperoxyl radical scavenging activity of<b> MD </b>was studied to establish baseline antioxidant activity, followed by an investigation of the effect of<b> MD </b>on the <span class="fontstyle01"><span>copper-catalyzed oxidative damage in</span></span> <span class="fontstyle01"><span>biological systems, using computational methods. It was found that</span></span><span class="fontstyle01"><span><b> MD </b></span></span><span class="fontstyle01"><span>exhibits moderate </span></span>radical scavenging activity against HOO<sup>·</sup> in physiological environments. The activity in aqueous solution is defined by the single electron transfer mechanism of the anion state; however in nonpolar environments the formal hydrogen transfer pathway dominates at the O3-H bond. It was also confirmed that<b> MD </b><span class="fontstyle01"><span>can chelate Cu (II), forming complexes that are much harder to reduce than free Cu (II):</span></span><span class="fontstyle01"><span><b> MD </b></span></span><span class="fontstyle01"><span>chelation completely quenches the Cu (II) reduction by ascorbic acid and suppresses the rate of reduction reaction by O<sub>2</sub></span></span><span class="fontstyle01"><span><sup>·</sup></span></span><span class="fontstyle01"><span><sup>-</sup></span></span><span class="fontstyle01"><span> that are the main reductants of Cu (II) in biological environments.
