Data from: Differential neural processing during motor imagery of daily activities in chronic low back pain patients

Chronic low back pain (chronic LBP) is both debilitating for patients but also a major burden on the health care system. Previous studies reported various maladaptive structural and functional changes among chronic LBP patients on spine- and supraspinal levels including behavioral alterations. However, evidence for cortical reorganization in the sensorimotor system of chronic LBP patients is scarce. Motor Imagery (MI) is suitable for investigating the cortical sensorimotor network as it serves as a proxy for motor execution. Our aim was to investigate differential MI-driven cortical processing in chronic LBP compared to healthy controls (HC) by means of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Twenty-nine subjects (15 chronic LBP patients, 14 HC) were included in the current study. MI stimuli consisted of randomly presented video clips showing every-day activities involving different whole-body movements as well as walking on even ground and walking downstairs and upstairs. Guided by the video clips, subjects had to perform MI of these activities, subsequently rating the vividness of their MI performance. Brain activity analysis revealed that chronic LBP patients exhibited significantly reduced activity compared to HC subjects in MI-related brain regions, namely the left supplementary motor area and right superior temporal sulcus. Furthermore, psycho-physiological-interaction analysis yielded significantly enhanced functional connectivity (FC) between various MI-associated brain regions in chronic LBP patients indicating diffuse and non-specific changes in FC. Current results demonstrate initial findings about differences in MI-driven cortical processing in chronic LBP pointing towards reorganization processes in the sensorimotor network.

Daily load and flexibility profiles (2030) according to the Active Economy scenario of the electricity transmission system from Portugal – ATTEST project

<p>This dataset was prepared under the framework of the ATTEST project, financed by the European Commission with grant number 864298. The dataset contains information about the full transmission test network of Portugal as in 2030, considering an Active Economy scenario which is more trending towards renewables and electrification of the economy. The grid topology has been anonymized and contains 312 nodes, 592 branches and 8 interconnections with Spain. It is operated at 400 kV, 220 kV and 150 kV. There are 299 generators, and a label classifies each of them according to the generation technology type (e.g., Fossil Gas, Wind Onshore, etc.). A network model (MatPower format) including the grid information and considering realistic assumptions for unknown data was built from scratch taking into account the available public data released by the Portuguese TSO as in 2020 and then updated to 2030 conditions. The auxiliary spreadsheet contains the following hourly data: load data, generator status obtained from unit commitment, regulated voltage magnitude setpoint of each generator, transformer tap ratio and aggregated flexibility per consumption node.</p>

Camera trap data: Density dependence of daily activity in three ungulate species

<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Daily activity in herbivores reflects a balance between finding food and safety. The safety-in-numbers theory predicts that living in higher population densities increases safety, which should affect this balance. High-density populations are thus expected to show a more even distribution of activity – i.e. spread – and higher activity levels across the day. We tested these predictions for three ungulate species; red deer (<i>Cervus elaphus</i>), roe deer (<i>Capreolus capreolus</i>) and wild boar (<i>Sus scrofa</i>). We used camera traps to measure the level and spread of activity across ten forest sites at the Veluwe, the Netherlands, that widely range in ungulate density. Food availability and hunting levels were included as covariates. Daily activity was more evenly distributed when population density was higher for all three species. Both deer species showed relatively more feeding activity in broad daylight and wild boar during dusk.  Activity level increased with population density only for wild boar. Food availability and hunting showed no correlation with activity patterns. These findings indicate that ungulate activity is to some degree density dependent. However, while these patterns might result from larger populations feeling safer as the safety-in-numbers theory states, we cannot rule out that they are the outcome of greater intraspecific competition for food, forcing animals to forage during suboptimal times of the day. Overall, this study demonstrates that wild ungulates adjust their activity spread and level based on their population size.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p>

Intra-population genetic variation in the level and rhythm of daily activity in Drosophila immigrans

<p>Genetic diversity within a population, such as polymorphisms and personality, is considered to improve population performance because such intraspecific variations have the potential to alleviate the competition for a limited resource or the risk of predation and sexual harassment at a population-level. Variation in the level and rhythm of daily activity in a population could also affect population performance by directly altering ecological, social, and sexual interactions among individuals. However, it remains to be elucidated whether such intra-population variation in the level and rhythms of daily activity exists in a natural population. Here, we investigated the genetic variation in daily activity within a single natural population of Drosophila immigrans. We established 21 isofemale lines from a single natural population, and measured larval activity level and the level and daily pattern of adult activity over a 24 h period. Larval activity level significantly varied among isofemale lines. Likewise, the activity level in the adult stage significantly varied among lines. The significant variation was also found in the daily pattern of adult activity; some lines showed greater activity level in the daytime, and others showed greater activity level in the night. Our results consistently suggest that there is a genetic variation in behavioral activity in a natural population, probably contributing to shaping the population performance.</p>
