NH Department of Environmental Studies (NHDES): Watershed Management Bureau Volunteer Lakes Assessment Program Lake Sunapee, 1986-2012

Data on Lake Sunapee were compiled by Kathleen Weathers’ Lab, Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies. Data were collected by Lake Sunapee Protective Association (LSPA) and analyzed by NH Department of Environmental Services (NHDES). LSPA has been concerned with water quality since its founding in 1898, when the issues were sawdust and trash in the lake and the level of the lake water. In the 1950’s LSPA collected water samples and tested for E.coli in order to have Lake Sunapee meet the standards to be named a class A (drinking water quality) lake in New Hampshire. Starting in the 1980’s, LSPA volunteer water quality monitors have been regularly sampling Lake Sunapee’s water in cove and deep sites in Lake Sunapee, and more recently in its tributary streams. The samples are analyzed in LSPA’s Water Quality Laboratory at Colby-Sawyer College; NH Department of Environmental Services provides an annual water quality report based on its analysis of the data as part of the VLAP (Volunteer Lake Assessment) Program. The LSPA lab at Colby-Sawyer College, run by Bonnie Lewis under strict quality standards as a sister lab to the state lab at NH Department of Environmental Services, also processes water samples for about twenty five area lakes.

Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, Michigan's Lake Water Quality Assessment Program (MI-LWQA), 2001-2010

The sampling methodology and program was designed to replicate the methods used historically by MI-DEQ to sample inland lakes in the 1970-1980’s. Each year, lakes were selected randomly from 7-10 major watersheds in MI. Watersheds were monitored in a 5-yr cycle in conjunctions with current MI-DEQ water quality activities. Lakes > 25 acres were chosen that had public boat access.

NH Department of Environmental Services (NHDES) Watershed Management Bureau Biology Section: Volunteer Lake Assessment Program (VLAP) Environmental Monitoring data, 1995-2014

The New Hampshire Volunteer Lake Assessment Program was initiated in 1985 in response to an expressed desire of lake associations to be involved in lake protection and watershed management. VLAP is a cooperative program between volunteer monitors and the DES which leads to local awareness of land use and human practices that may be detrimental to lake quality and also empowers communities in their decision-making regarding lake management issues. The three major partners are the NHDES Biology Section, numerous volunteer monitors located throughout the state, and the VLAP satellite laboratories. Sara Steiner, NHDES VLAP Coordinator (who reports directly to Jody Connor, the Limnology Center Director and VLAP Program Manager), has the overall responsibility for training the volunteer monitors throughout the state in sample collection and watershed monitoring, conducting annual site visits and training interns to conduct annual site visits. NHDES and the volunteer monitors will collect samples from their lake/pond and its watershed, and will then bring samples to the NHDES Limnology Center, the Lake Sunapee Region Laboratory at Colby Sawyer College in New London, or the Environmental Research Laboratory at Plymouth State University in Plymouth. The purpose of VLAP is to assess the chemical and biological characteristics of the lakes and ponds throughout the state to determine overall health of the system. Environmental results are measured by making comparisons to established means and ranges of water quality for the state of New Hampshire. Chemical, biological, and physical parameters are measured and compared to lakes throughout the state. This data is provided to NHDES and the volunteer monitors. The data is used by the NHDES for assessment, education, and reporting purposes. The data are used by the volunteer monitors for educational purposes and for guiding local lake management activities. Data from: An environmental impact assessment of different management regimes in eucalypt plantations in southern China using Landscape Function Analysis

<p>There are global concerns regarding the detrimental environmental impacts of industrial forest plantations developed over the past 30 years. To address this concern, the Landscape Function Analysis methodology was used to rapidly assess indices of soil stability, water infiltration, and nutrient cycling within eucalypt plantations at different growth stages and under different management regimes in Guangxi Province, China. Results showed that these plantations under both regimes were approaching an ecologically functional state by the time of harvest. However, within the plantation management that included the burning of post-harvest biomass residues, indices of water infiltration, and nutrient cycling were significantly lower than within the plantation that retained post-harvest residues. Indicators of rain splash protection, perennial vegetation cover, and litter accumulation were all lower in the plantation that practiced residue burning and pre-planting cultivation. Retention of post-harvest residues improves landscape functionality at the time of re-planting. Our results indicate that burning and extensive cultivation prior to re-planting should be minimized.</p>

Data from: Equivalence analysis to support environmental safety assessment: using nontarget organism count data from field trials with cisgenically modified potato

This paper considers the statistical analysis of entomological count data from field experiments with genetically modified (GM) plants. Such trials are carried out to assess environmental safety. Potential effects on nontarget organisms (NTOs), as indicators of biodiversity, are investigated. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) gives broad guidance on the environmental risk assessment (ERA) of GM plants. Field experiments must contain suitable comparator crops as a benchmark for the assessment of designated endpoints. In this paper, a detailed protocol is proposed to perform data analysis for the purpose of assessing environmental safety. The protocol includes the specification of a list of endpoints and their hierarchical relations, the specification of intended levels of data analysis, and the specification of provisional limits of concern to decide on the need for further investigation. The protocol emphasizes a graphical representation of estimates and confidence intervals for the ratio of mean abundances for the GM plant and its comparator crop. Interpretation relies mainly on equivalence testing in which confidence intervals are compared with the limits of concern. The proposed methodology is illustrated with entomological count data resulting from multiyear, multilocation field trials. A cisgenically modified potato line (with enhanced resistance to late blight disease) was compared to the original conventional potato variety in the Netherlands and Ireland in two successive years (2013, 2014). It is shown that the protocol encompasses alternative schemes for safety assessment resulting from different research questions and/or expert choices. Graphical displays of equivalence testing at several hierarchical levels and their interpretation are presented for one of these schemes. The proposed approaches should be of help in the ERA of GM or other novel plants.

Performance and environmental accounting of nutrient cycling models to estimate nitrogen emissions in agriculture and their sensitivity in life cycle assessment

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Purpose</p> <p>Several models are available in the literature to estimate agricultural emissions. From life cycle assessment (LCA) perspective, there is no standardized procedure for estimating emissions of nitrogen or other nutrients. This article aims to compare four agricultural models (PEF, SALCA, Daisy and Animo) with different complexity levels and test their suitability and sensitivity in LCA.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Required input data, obtained outputs, and main characteristics of the models are presented. Then, the performance of the models was evaluated according to their potential feasibility to be used in estimating nitrogen emissions in LCA using an adapted version of the criteria proposed by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), and other relevant studies, to judge their suitability in LCA. Finally, nitrogen emissions from a case study of irrigated maize in Spain were estimated using the selected models and were tested in a full LCA to characterize the impacts.</p> <p>Results and discussion</p> <p>According to the set of criteria, the models scored, from best to worst: Daisy (77%), SALCA (74%), Animo (72%) and PEF (70%), being Daisy the most suitable model to LCA framework. Regarding the case study, the estimated emissions agreed to literature data for the irrigated corn crop in Spain and the Mediterranean, except N<sub>2</sub>O emissions. The impact characterization showed differences of up to 56% for the most relevant impact categories when considering nitrogen emissions. Additionally, an overview of the models used to estimate nitrogen emissions in LCA studies showed that many models have been used, but not always in a suitable or justified manner.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Although mechanistic models are more laborious, mainly due to the amount of input data required, this study shows that Daisy could be a suitable model to estimate emissions when fertilizer application is relevant for the environmental study. In addition, and due to LCA urgently needing a solid methodology to estimate nitrogen emissions, mechanistic models such as Daisy could be used to estimate default values for different archetype scenarios.</p>

Assessing environmental DNA metabarcoding and camera trap surveys as complementary tools for biomonitoring of remote desert water bodies

<p>Biodiversity assessments are indispensable tools for planning and monitoring conservation strategies. Camera traps (CT) are widely used to monitor wildlife and have proven their usefulness. Environmental DNA (eDNA)-based approaches are increasingly implemented for biomonitoring, combining sensitivity, high taxonomic coverage and resolution, non-invasiveness and easiness of sampling, but remain challenging for terrestrial fauna. However, in remote desert areas where scattered water bodies attract terrestrial species, which release their DNA into the water, this method presents a unique opportunity for their detection. In order to identify the most efficient method for a given study system, comparative studies are needed. Here, we compare CT and DNA metabarcoding of water samples collected from two desert ecosystems, the Trans-Altai Gobi in Mongolia and the Kalahari in Botswana. We recorded with CT the visiting patterns of wildlife and studied the correlation with the biodiversity captured with the eDNA approach. The aim of the present study was threefold: a) to investigate how well waterborne eDNA captures signals of terrestrial fauna in remote desert environments, which have been so far neglected in terms of biomonitoring efforts; b) to compare two distinct approaches for biomonitoring in such environments and c) to draw recommendations for future eDNA-based biomonitoring. We found significant correlations between the two methodologies and describe a detectability score based on variables extracted from CT data and the visiting patterns of wildlife. This supports the use of eDNA-based biomonitoring in these ecosystems and encourages further research to integrate the methodology in the planning and monitoring of conservation strategies.</p>

Productivity of riparian Populus forests: satellite assessment along a prairie river with an environmental flow regime

<p>In semi-arid regions, the growth and survival of cottonwoods (riparian Populus species) depend on river water supplementing the limited precipitation. Indicators of growth and productivity are needed to assess how altered streamflow regimes on regulated rivers impact cottonwood trees and the riparian forest ecosystems they support. Satellite imagery from the Landsat program was used to make historical assessments of ecosystem productivity in a riparian cottonwood forest along a regulated prairie river in southern Alberta, Canada from 1984 to 2020, with an environmental flow regime that increased the minimum flows implemented in 1993. A version of the near-infrared reflectance of vegetation scaled with incoming sunlight (NIRvP) was calculated from Landsat images to  provide a proxy for primary production. NIRvP was validated against gross primary production measurements from eddy covariance and cottonwood basal area increment measurements from tree ring analyses. Streamflow and weather data were used to assess what  environmental conditions drive year-to-year variations in NIRvP.</p>
