<p>This repository contains the Matlab codes developed for the image processing illustrated in the paper &quot;A simple image analysis technique for measuring bed surface texture in flume experiments&quot; submitted to the Journal of Hydrology.&nbsp; Results of the image processing are reported in some excel spreadsheets.&nbsp;We also provide the pdf file of the paper &quot;Morphology, bedload and sorting process variability in response to lateral confinement: results from physical models of gravel-bed rivers&quot; illustrating the laboratory experiments for which we developed the image analysis technique presented in&nbsp; &quot;A simple image analysis technique for measuring bed surface texture in flume experiments&quot;. The paper titled&nbsp; &quot;Morphology, bedload and sorting process variability in response to lateral confinement: results from physical models of gravel-bed rivers&quot; has not been published yet, but it has been accepted by the Journal of Geophysical Research - Earth Surface. Suspended and bedload transport in an open channel laboratory flume

<p>Notwithstanding the large number of studies on bedforms such as dunes and antidunes, performing quantitative predictions of bedform type and geometry remains an open problem. Here we present the results of laboratory experiments specifically designed to study how sediment supply and caliber may impact equilibrium bedform type and geometry in the upper regime. Experiments were performed in a sediment feed flume with flow rates varying between 8 l/s and 15 l/s, sand supply rates varying between 0.6 kg/min and 16 kg/min, uniform and non-uniform sediment grain sizes with geometric mean diameter varying between 0.22 mm and 0.87 mm. The experimental data and the comparison with datasets available in the literature revealed that the ratio of the volume transport of sediment to the volume transport of water <em>Q<sub>s</sub></em>/<em>Q<sub>w</sub></em> plays a prime control in the equilibrium bed configuration. The equilibrium bed configuration transitions from washed-out dunes (lower regime), to downstream migrating antidunes (upper regime) for <em>Q<sub>s</sub></em>/<em>Q<sub>w</sub></em> between 0.0003 and 0.0007. For values of <em>Q<sub>s</sub></em>/<em>Q<sub>w</sub></em> greater than those typical of downstream migrating antidunes, the bedform wavelength increases with <em>Q<sub>s</sub></em>/<em>Q<sub>w</sub></em>. At these high values of <em>Q<sub>s</sub></em>/<em>Q<sub>w</sub></em> equilibrium bed configurations with fine sand are characterized by upstream migrating antidunes or cyclic steps, and significant suspended load. In experiments with coarse sand, equilibrium is characterized by plane bed with bedload transport in sheet flow mode. Standing waves form at the transition between downstream migrating antidunes and bed configurations with upstream migrating bedforms. </p>

WALOWA (WAVE LOADS ON WALLS) - LARGE SCALE EXPERIMENTS IN THE DELTA FLUME

<p>WaLoWa stands for Wave Loads on Walls and is a Hydralab+ project funded by the European Union. Ghent University (Belgium), TU Delft (The Netherlands), RWTH Aachen (Germany), Politechnico Bari and University of Florence (Italy) and Flanders Hydraulics Research (Belgium) are jointly working on the WaLoWa project. The user team leader is Ghent University. The WaLoWa project is hosted by Deltares and the Delta Flume facility.</p> <p>When storm walls and buildings are located on top of a dike or promenade, overtopping waves can induce large forces on these structures as has e.g. been observed at the Belgian coast which has a specifically shallow foreshore. Especially during storm season and in times of sea level rise these loads can be highly destructive. It is therefore the key objective of WaLoWa to study overtopped wave loads on structures situated on top of a dike and in shallow foreshore conditions.</p>
