Atmospheric oxygen as a tracer for fossil fuel carbon dioxide: a sensitivity study in the UK

<p>Abstract. We investigate the use of oxygen (O2) and carbon dioxide (CO2) measurements for the estimation of the fossil fuel component of atmospheric CO2 in the UK. Atmospheric potential oxygen (APO) &ndash; a tracer that combines O2 and CO2, minimising the influence of terrestrial biosphere fluxes &ndash; is simulated at three sites in the UK, two of which have APO measurements. We present a set of model experiments that estimate the sensitivity of APO simulations to key inputs: fluxes from the ocean, fossil fuel flux magnitude and distribution, the APO baseline, and the ratio of O2 to CO2 fluxes from fossil fuel combustion and the terrestrial biosphere. To estimate the influence of uncertainties in ocean fluxes, we compared three ocean O2 flux estimates, from the NEMO &ndash; ERSEM and ECCO-Darwin ocean models, and the Jena Carboscope inversion. The sensitivity of APO to fossil fuel emission magnitudes and to terrestrial biosphere and fossil fuel exchange ratios was investigated through Monte Carlo sampling within literature uncertainty ranges, and by comparing different inventory estimates. Of the factors that could potentially compromise APO-derived fossil fuel CO2 estimates, we find that the ocean O2 flux estimate has the largest overall influence at the three sites in the UK. At times, this influence is comparable to the contribution to APO of simulated fossil fuel CO2. We find that simulations using different ocean fluxes differ from each other substantially, with no single estimate, or a simulation with zero ocean flux, providing a significantly closer fit to the observations. Furthermore, the uncertainty in the ocean contribution to APO could lead to uncertainty in defining an appropriate regional background from the data. Our findings suggest that the contribution of non-terrestrial sources need to be well accounted for, in order to reduce their potential influence on inferred fossil fuel CO2.</p>

Organic aerosol sources in Krakow, Poland, before implementation of a solid fuel residential heating ban

<p>Krakow is a pollution hot-spot in Europe which is thought to be caused mainly by a high use of coal combustion (power plants, residential heating). Here, we quantify the impact of coal burning on air quality in the city of Krakow before the use of solid fuels for residential heating was banned within the city of Krakow. The particulate matter (PM) was collected on 126 24-hour filter samples (January to September, both PM<sub>1</sub> and PM<sub>10</sub>, i.e., with an aerodynamic diameter smaller than 1&nbsp;&micro;m and 10&nbsp;&micro;m, respectively) and analyzed with an aerosol mass spectrometer and the sources of the organic aerosol (OA) quantified. Secondary OA (SOA) likely from residential heating was the main contributor to winter-time OA (78% in PM<sub>1</sub>, 57% in PM<sub>10</sub>) and was composed of equal parts of fossil and non-fossil emissions. Additionally, fresh solid fuel combustion emissions from residential heating contribute to OA during winter (coal combustion OA (CCOA): 12%, biomass burning OA (BBOA): 3%). While BBOA contributed substantially to water-soluble OA, COOA was found to be water-insoluble and thus not identified as part of water-soluble OA. Together with the fairly low water-solubility of WOOA (29%), this leads to a low overall water-solubility of organic carbon during winter (35%). In contrast, spring and summer were characterized by more soluble organic carbon (71% in PM<sub>1</sub>, 55% in PM&shy;<sub>10</sub>) which was dominated by biogenic sources (non-fossil), i.e., fine biogenic secondary oxygenated OA (summer oxygenated OA (SOOA): 35% in PM<sub>1</sub>) and coarse primary biological OA (PBOA: 54% in PM<sub>10</sub>). Overall, here we provide information on OA&rsquo;s sources needed to evaluate the success of mentioned efforts to improve air quality in Krakow in future studies.</p>

The subject of the study was a molten carbonate fuel cell fueled with a mixture of methane and steam with steam to carbon ratio of 2.0, 2.5, 3.0 and 3.5 and at the cell operating temperature of 550&deg;C and 650&deg;C. Additionally, in the anode channel of the cell, there was a catalyst in the amount of 2 g. The active area of the cell was 20.25 cm<sup>2</sup>. The article that uses these research results is published in an open access journal with a CC-BY license. This research was funded by the National Science Center, Poland (Grant number 2020/39/D/ST8/02021).</p>

Mitochondrial responses to long-term and cyclic hypoxia depend on the oxidized fuel in a hypoxia-tolerant marine bivalve Crassostrea gigas

<p>These are the metadata for a publication&nbsp;&quot;Mitochondrial responses to long-term and cyclic hypoxia depend on the oxidized fuel in a hypoxia-tolerant marine bivalve <em>Crassostrea gigas&quot;</em> under consideration for publication in the Scientific reports. Sessile benthic organisms like oysters inhabits intertidal zone transitioning between aquatic and terrestrial condition during tidal movements exposing the organisms to alternating hypoxia and reoxygenation (H/R) episodes thereby altering the respiratory chain activities and metabolome compositions. Our study investigated the effects of constant long-term H/R stress (90 min at ~0% O<sub>2, </sub>and 10 min reoxygenation) and constant cyclic H/R stress (5 cycles of 15 min at ~0% O<sub>2, </sub>and 10 min reoxygenation) on isolated mitochondria from the gill and the digestive gland of <em>C. gigas</em> respiring on different substrates (pyruvate, palmitate, and succinate). Both gill and the digestive gland mitochondria exposed to constant long-term H/R suppressed OXPHOS respiration especially during Complex I oxidation with no change in ROS efflux but an increase FEL. In the gill mitochondria oxidizing Complex I substrates, exposure to constant cyclic H/R prompted a significant drop after the first H/R cycle. In contrast, succinate-driven respiration only showed significant decline after the fifth H/R cycle. ROS efflux and FEL however saw little to no change after constant cyclic H/R. This observation from our study further suggests succinate as a potential stress fuel under H/R stress and might assist in post-hypoxic recovery of oysters mitigating oxidative stress and supporting rapid ATP re-synthesis during oxygen fluctuations such as commonly observed in intertidal zones. Additionally, our study revealed that constant long-term hypoxia is more damaging than constant cyclic hypoxia.&nbsp;</p>
