Character mentions in the German novel "Corpus Delicti" by Juli Zeh and annotations

<p>This file contains all character mentions in the German novel &quot;Corpus Delicti&quot; by Juli Zeh. The annotation was conducted by members of the research group hermA (www.herma.uni-hamburg.de). The file includes the following columns:</p> <ul> <li>id</li> <li>token: tokens of the character mention</li> <li>entity_nr: the (arbitrary) entity number. Abstractions and exemplars: the measure noun phrase alternation in German

<p>This is the data set and scripts used in &quot;Abstractions and exemplars: the measure noun phrase alternation in German&quot; as accepted for publication in Cognitive Linguistics as of 29 may 2018.</p> <p>In this paper, an alternation in German measure noun phrases is examined under a varying-abstraction perspective. In a specific measure NP construction, the embedded kind-denoting noun either agrees in case with the measure noun (&quot;eine Tasse guter Kaffee&quot; &#39;a cup of good coffee&#39;) or it stands in the genitive (&quot;eine Tasse guten Kaffees&quot;). Each of the two alternants is syntactically similar to a non-alternating construction. I propose a prototype model which assigns a common prototypical meaning to each of the alternants and its corresponding non-alternating construction. Based on this, I argue that lexical, morpho-syntactic, and stylistic features help to predict the choice of the alternant. A large corpus study is presented which supports this analysis. However, in addition to the prototype effects, an exemplar effect is also shown to influence the choice, namely the relative frequencies with which lemmas occur in the non-alternating constructions. I argue that allowing both prototype and exemplar effects is more adequate than following radical prototype or exemplar approaches. It is also verified in two experiments that the corpus-derived model corresponds to the behaviour of native speakers. The weak effect size of the experimental validation is discussed in the context of corpus-based cognitive linguistics and the validation of corpus-derived models.</p>

GT4HistOCR: Ground Truth for training OCR engines on historical documents in German Fraktur and Early Modern Latin

<p><strong>GT4HistOCR</strong> contains ground truth for research in Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology applied to historical printings in German Fraktur and Early Modern Latin.</p> <p>The ground truth comes in pairs of images of single printed lines as they appear in book pages (*.png) and their corresponding diplomatic transcriptions (*.gt.txt), which are UTF-8 strings preserving the character forms (glyphs) as much as possible within the UNICODE standard. These pairs of line images and their transcriptions can be directly used to train recognition models with, e.g., the open source OCR engines <em>OCRopy</em> or <em>Tesseract</em>. A total of 313,173 ground truth lines are provided.</p> <p><strong>Please note that the subcorpora making up this collection used different transcription guidelines, so it is a bad idea to train a recognition model on the total collection! How Confidence in Prior Attitudes, Social Tag Popularity, and Source Credibility Shape Confirmation Bias Toward Antidepressants and Psychotherapy in a Representative German Sample: Randomized Controlled Web-Based Study

<p>ABSTRACT</p> <p>Background: In health-related, Web-based information search, people should select information in line with expert (vs nonexpert) information, independent of their prior attitudes and consequent confirmation bias.</p> <p>Objective: This study aimed to investigate confirmation bias in mental health&ndash;related information search, particularly (1) if high confidence worsens confirmation bias, (2) if social tags eliminate the influence of prior attitudes, and (3) if people successfully distinguish high and low source credibility.</p> <p>Methods: In total, 520 participants of a representative sample of the German Web-based population were recruited via a panel company. Among them, 48.1% (250/520) participants completed the fully automated study. Participants provided <em>prior attitudes</em> about antidepressants and psychotherapy. We manipulated (1) <em>confidence</em> in prior attitudes when participants searched for blog posts about the treatment of depression, (2) <em>tag popularity</em> &mdash;either psychotherapy or antidepressant tags were more popular, and (3) <em>source credibility</em> with banners indicating high or low expertise of the tagging community. We measured <em>tag</em> and <em>blog post</em> selection, and <em>treatment</em><em>efficacy ratings</em> after navigation.</p> <p>Results: Tag popularity predicted the proportion of selected antidepressant tags (beta=.44, SE 0.11; <em>P</em>&lt;.001) and blog posts (beta=.46, SE 0.11; <em>P</em>&lt;.001). When confidence was low (&minus;1 SD), participants selected more blog posts consistent with prior attitudes (beta=&minus;.26, SE 0.05; <em>P</em>&lt;.001). Moreover, when confidence was low (&minus;1 SD) and source credibility was high (+1 SD), the efficacy ratings of attitude-consistent treatments increased (beta=.34, SE 0.13; <em>P</em>=.01).</p> <p>Conclusions: We found correlational support for defense motivation account underlying confirmation bias in the mental health&ndash;related search context. That is, participants tended to select information that supported their prior attitudes, which is not in line with the current scientific evidence.
