Plot descriptions and location data from datalogger, 1m x 1m chamber flux and point frame plots sampled near Toolik Field Station in Alaska the summer of 2012.
"2012_GS_PFandCH_GPS" contains GPS locations of all datalogger, 1m x 1m chamber flux and point frame plots sampled IVO Toolik Field Station in Alaska during the summer of 2012. The sorting variables (YEAR, DATE, SITE, GROUP, PLOT, TREAT, PLOT SIZE) are identical to those in other files with data collected that season. The main purpose of this file is for reference and as an aid in interpretation of data analyses and among-site comparisons.
Baltimore Ecosystem Study: Riparian vegetation data - 2 of 11 -1999_plot_and_2004_transect_locations
This is one of 11 datasets generated in a study of riparian vegetation in the Baltimore Ecosystem Study from 1999-2004. Comparisons of vegetation between the rural/suburban (upper) and urban (lower) sections of the watershed show distinct patterns across an urban to rural gradient. In the lower, more urban section of the watershed, wetland tree species are either absent or occur as small stems while upland species are abundant, in mixed sizes. A comparison of the number of wetland and upland species in the mostly urbanized Gwynns Falls riparian zone with non-urbanized Piedmont floodplains throughout Maryland shows approximately twice as many upland species in the urban floodplain than in non-urbanized floodplains. The majority of shrubs in riparian zones through the Gwynns Falls are upland species. For herbaceous species, frequencies of upland and wetland species are about equal in the upper and middle regions of the watershed, but upland species are more common in the more urban lower floodplains by a factor of greater than two.

Vegetation cover: Wickersham fire sites (at the Viereck thaw probe locations), 1977-2004
In June of 1971, the Wickersham fire burned 6313 ha in an open black spruce forest underlain with permafrost and provided an opportunity to study fire and fireline effects on the rate and patterns of permafrost, soil, and vegetation recovery. When wildfire burns through a northern black spruce forest the degree of soil organic layer consumption greatly influences the post-fire community characteristics. The construction of firelines with heavy machinery involves the complete removal of vegetation and the soil organic layer down to mineral soil and likewise affects the community characteristics after fire and fire suppression. This long-term study is a comparison between the vegetative communities of firelines, burned, and unburned open black spruce forests underlain by ice rich permafrost. Vegetation percent cover for all species were measured in the fireline, burned, and unburned control sites on the east side of Cushman Creek of the Wickersham Fire Sites, as well as the fireline on the west side of Cushman Creek. This dataset largely focuses on the vegetation of the three east side sites (2004, 2012, and 2130) to corroborate the detailed studies of active layer depths and fireline surface level changes previously published (Viereck, 1982; also see datasets in related material section) and in preparation.>

Tree heights and diameters at breast height were measured for tree species in the heavily burned and unburned control sites on the east side of Cushman Creek of the Wickersham Fire Sites. This dataset focuses on the trees of the east side sites (2004 and 2130) to corroborate the detailed studies of active layer depths and fireline surface level changes previously published (Viereck, 1982; also see datasets in related material section) and in preparation.
White Spruce Seedling Demography and Browsing by Snowshoe Hares Inside and Outside the Moose-spruce Exclosures located along the Tanana River
This study started in September 2002 focused on the indirect effect of moose browsing on white spruce regeneration on the Tanana River floodplain. Twelve exclosures (7m X 10m, 2m high), with adjacent control plots of the same size, were constructed using chain-link fence panels. Exclosures were located along the Tanana River between FP 1A and FP 1C and instrumented with Hobo Microstations for monitoring of soil and air temperature, relative humidity, and PAR. Browsing effects on deciduous vegetation (biomass removal and canopy height) and soil properties were analyzed in relation to the performance (germination, growth and biochemistry) of planted white spruce seeds and seedlings (n=98/exclosure). Additionally, direct browsing by snowshoe hares on spruce seedlings (growth and survival) was evaluated in relation to canopy cover and terrace age. The study is ongoing. White spruce seedling height, basal diameter, browsing history, and survival were measured inside and outside the ten remaining paired exclosure and control plots located along the Tanana River floodplain in the summer of 2014.

Accuracy of ring width dates were checked by crossdating using COFECHA.

Herbivores have the capacity to modify plant community composition and ecosystem structure and function via browsing. For example, moose and snowshoe hare facilitate succession in Alaska's boreal forest by preferentially browsing early successional species over late successional conifers. Snowshoe hares also eat conifers, including white spruce, and this browsing may affect the pattern of spruce establishment over time. We measured over 800 spruce at 18 locations along the Tanana River floodplain in interior Alaska, USA and demonstrated that the proportion of spruce browsed annually positively correlates with annual hare abundance.
Effects of nutrients and organic carbon on the relative proportion of primary producers (microalgae) and heterotrophic decomposers (bacteria and fungi) during aquatic biofilm development in boreal peatland located near Fairbanks Alaska - 2018
1. Producer-decomposer interactions within aquatic biofilms can range from mutualistic associations to competition depending on available resources. The outcomes of such interactions have implications for biogeochemical cycling, and as such, may be especially important in northern peatlands, which are a global carbon sink and are expected to experience changes in resource availability with climate change. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of nutrients and organic carbon on the relative proportion of primary producers (microalgae) and heterotrophic decomposers (bacteria and fungi) during aquatic biofilm development in a boreal peatland. Given that decomposers are often better competitors for nutrients than primary producers in aquatic ecosystems, we predicted that labile carbon subsidies would shift the biofilm composition towards heterotrophy owing to the ability of decomposers to outcompete primary producers for available nutrients in the absence of carbon limitation. 2. We manipulated nutrients (nitrate and phosphate) and organic carbon (glucose) in a full factorial design using nutrient-diffusing substrates in an Alaskan fen. 3. Heterotrophic bacteria were limited by organic carbon and algae were limited by inorganic nutrients. However, the outcomes of competitive interactions depended on background nutrient levels. Heterotrophic bacteria were able to outcompete algae for available nutrients when organic carbon was elevated and nutrient levels remained low, but not when organic carbon and nutrients were both elevated through enrichment. 4. Fungal biomass was significantly lower in the presence of glucose alone, possibly owing to antagonistic interactions with heterotrophic bacteria. In contrast to bacteria, fungi were stimulated along with algae following nutrient enrichment. 5. The decoupling of algae and heterotrophic bacteria in the presence of glucose alone shifted the biofilm trophic status towards heterotrophy. This effect was overturned
Concentration of calcium in stream-dwelling Plethodontid salamanders across six streams located with the Coweeta Hydrologic Laboratory, Otto, NC
We examined the concentration of calcium in several species of stream-dwelling plethodontid salamanders captured across six streams located within the Coweeta LTER site. %Ca was measured for 15 Eurycea wilderae, 15 Desmognathus ocoee, and 20 Desmognathus quadramaculatus. Because D. quadramaculatus larvae represent animals across a 3-4 year larval lifespan, for %Ca analysis we randomly sampled 6-8 D. quadramaculatus from each of three size classes: 18-25 mm SVL, 26-33 mm SVL, and 33-40 mm SVL.
Coweeta LTER Synoptic Data from 56 sampling sites located in the Upper Little Tennessee River Basin from 2009 (geomorphological)
Coweeta LTER researchers sampled fifty-eight stream sites in the Upper Little Tennessee River Basin in February and June of 2009. Sites were selected to represent the range of land cover and land use within the basin. Samples were taken over three days of stable weather and discharge during periods of baseflow. They were used to characterize conditions across the basin during the growing and the non-growing seasons without the influence of elevated discharge. Each entity represents a table found in the downloadable relational database. NOTE: There is only 1 database to download regardless of which entity you choose. Hourly soil moisture, soil temperature, groundwater temperature, and groundwater stage height measurements from 9 Hillslope Study sites located in Macon County, North Carolina, within the Upper Little Tennessee River Basin
The Hillslope Study was established to directly link land use impacts to streamwater quality in the southern Appalachian Mountains. Nine sites were selected in the Little Tennessee River watershed in Macon County, NC, representing four land use types: forest, mountain development, traditional valley, and large river valley. At each of these sites, three subsurface flowpaths were identified, and four plots were established along the flowpath following the elevation gradient. At seven of the nine sites, the three lower elevation plots at one of the subsurface flowpaths had ground water wells installed in order to measure groundwater stage and temperature along an elevational gradient. Additional sensors were installed adjacent to the groundwater wells to measure soil moisture at 0-30 cm and 30-60 cm below the ground surface uphill and downhill of the well, and soil temperature at 5 cm below the ground surface. Measurements were taken every 60 seconds and output as hourly averages. Data were used as part of the Regional HydroEcological Simulation System (RHESSys) ecohydrologic model. Climate station measurements from 5 Hillslope Project sites located in Macon County, North Carolina, within the Upper Little Tennessee River Basin
The hillslope study was established to directly link land use impacts to streamwater quality in the southern Appalachian Mountains. Nine sites were selected in the Little Tennessee River watershed in Macon County, NC, representing four land use types: forest, mountain development, traditional valley, and large river valley. At five of the nine sites, a climate station was installed that measured air temperature, wind speed and direction, Relative Humidity, and Solar Radiation. Dew point, Wind Chill, and Heat index were also calculated based on these measurements. Sensor output was measured every minute and output as averages or totals every hour.

Measurements were taken every two weeks. Water depth in these wells was manually measured every two weeks using a water level indicator.
