Adirondack Lakes Long Term Monitoring (NY), 1992-2011
This data release represents raw values through final quality assurance. Eight of the original 17 ALTM lake sampling sites established by Syracuse University in 1982 were located some distance downstream from the main lakes usually in proximity to a road. These sites included: Black Pond, Bubb Lake, Cascade Lake, Constable Lake, Otter Lake, Squash Pond, West Pond and Windfall Pond. In 1993, the expanded ALTM project began to collect additional samples upstream of the original roadside sites at the main lake outlets. The ALTM lakes are sampled monthly. Lakes with no outlets and those accessed by helicopter are sampled at the deepest part of hte lake at a depth of 0.5 m with a Kemmerer sampler. All other sites are sampled at the outlet by surface grab method. Samples are analyzed at the ALSC laboratory in Ray Brook, NY. There are 4 lakes with recent liming histories: 030172 Little Clear; 040576 Woods; 040905 Barnes and 060182 Little Simon.
Weather Data, 1940-2016, Adirondack Long-Term Ecological Monitoring Program by Adirondack Ecological Center of the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry, Newcomb, New York, USA
These datasets include information collected from 1940 to 2016 in or around Huntington Wildlife Forest at the Adirondack Ecological Center in Newcomb, New York. Data were collected daily and include minimum and maximum daily temperature, precipitation, snowfall, and sometimes additional measurements (e.g., wind direction, weather events). These data were collected as part of the Adirondack Long Term Ecological Monitoring Program (ALTEMP).
Upper Midwest Long-Term Monitoring (UMWLTM) Program
The Upper Midwest Long-term Monitoring Program lakes were initially part of a larger EPA-funded project (http://www.epa.gov/airmarkets/assessments/TIMELTM.html) to investigate trends in the acid-base chemistry of lakes in sensitive regions of the US. At the start of the project in 1983, the UMW lakes included lakes in Voyageurs National Park in Minnesota, north-central Wisconsin, and the upper peninsula of Michigan. The lakes represent low alkalinity systems considered most sensitive to acid deposition, which increased from east to west across the 3-state region. Lakes in Wisconsin and Michigan were primarily seepage lakes. Over time the sampling frequency declined (from spring, summer and autumn to only autumn) and lakes were dropped from the initial set of lakes due to funding constraints. The longest period of record is from 1983 to 2000.
Stable carbon, oxygen and nitrogen isotopes in tree rings from temperate forests within long-term monitoring network in the UK
<p>Supporting dataset for the paper "Climate and atmospheric deposition effects on forest water‑use efficiency and nitrogen availability across Britain" by Guerrieri et al. 2020 Scientific Reports DOI is 10.1038/s41598-020-67562-w (<a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-020-67562-w">https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-020-67562-w</a>)</p> <p>The dataset includes carbon, oxygen and nitrogen stable isotope composition measured in tree rings for four species at twelve forests across climate and atmospheric deposition gradients in Britain. Data were used to i) investigate spatial and temporal (over 30‑years) changes in tree intrinsic water use efficiency (iWUE, i.e., the ratio between CO<sub>2</sub> assimilation - A, and stomatal conductance- g<sub>s</sub>); ii) assess the possible species-specific physiological mechanisms (changes in A and/or g<sub>s</sub>) evaluate whether sites receiving high Ndep experience increase in ecosystem N availability and N saturation (using tree-ring nitrogen isotope composition as a proxy); iv) elucidate drivers of spatial and temporal changes in the isotope-derived physiological and ecological processes (i.e., relative contribution of climate vs. changes in atmospheric CO<sub>2</sub> and nitrogen and sulfur deposition). </p> <p>The following files are available:</p> <ul> <li>CSV file including: a) Site names; b) Species; c) Latitude; d) Longitude; e) Investigated years (1980-2010); f) Measured isotope-related parameters and tree ring nitrogen %. Isotope-related parameters included in the dataset are: 1) delta13C, 2) carbon isotope discrimination (Delta13C), 3) intercellular CO2 concentration (ci) and the ratio of intercellular to atmospheric CO2 concentrations (ci/ca), delta18O, estimated delta18O in precipitation (delta18OP) according to Barbour et al. 2001 (see Method in Guerrieri et al. 2020 Scientific Reports), oxygen isotope discrimination above the source water (Delta18O), delta15N. </li> <li>PDF file reporting the equations used to calculate the isotope-derived parameters, which can also be found in the paper by Guerrieri et al. 2020 Scientific Reports (accepted)</li> </ul>
