FIG. 5. – The northern face of the Plum Grove house, taken in 2010. The Bone Feature discussed throughout this paper was identified roughly 4-5m east (here, to the left) of the house (photography courtesy of William E. Whittaker). Additional photographs of the site as well as digital reconstructions of the property as it would have looked at various times throughout history can be seen at: http://www.uiowa.edu/~plumgrov/index.html.

Market forces determine the distribution of a leaky function in a simple microbial community

<p>Many biological functions are leaky, and organisms that perform them contribute some of their products to a community "marketplace" where non-performing individuals may compete for them. Leaky functions are partitioned unequally in microbial communities, and the evolutionary forces determining which species perform them and which become beneficiaries are poorly understood. Here we demonstrate that the market principle of comparative advantage determines the distribution of a leaky antibiotic resistance gene in an environment occupied by two "species" - strains of Escherichia coli growing on mutually exclusive resources and thus occupying separate niches. Communities comprised of antibiotic-resistant cells were rapidly invaded by sensitive cells of both types. While the two phenotypes coexisted stably for 500 generations, in 15/18 replicates, antibiotic sensitivity became fixed in one species. Fixation always occurred in the same species, despite both species being genetically identical except for their niche-defining mutation. In the absence of antibiotic, the fitness cost of resistance was identical in both species. However, the intrinsic resistance of the species that ultimately became the sole helper was significantly lower, and thus its reward for expressing the resistance gene was higher. Opportunity cost of resistance, not absolute cost or efficiency of antibiotic removal, determined which species became helper, consistent with the economic theory of comparative advantage. We present a model that suggests that this market-like dynamic is a general property of Black Queen systems, and in communities dependent on multiple leaky functions, could lead to the spontaneous development of an equitable and efficient division of labor.</p>

Simulated XES event log of a marketing campaign system

<p>We relied on the interview-driven methodology defined in our previous work \cite{benvenuti2022}, which allowed us to specify various simulation scenarios to frame the boundaries of all possible pipeline executions.</p> <p>Then, we generated this simulated event logs in the traditional XES format using the Simio (https://www.simio.com/), obtaining 10,000 execution traces compliant with the simulation scenarios. In the picture it is shown the Directly-Follow Graph (DFG) representing the pipeline structure, discovered by feeding a process discovery tool (https://fluxicon.com/disco/) with the simulated event log.</p> <p>The pipeline is triggered when the system receives a request to model a new marketing campaign or to report on how an already existing one is performing. In both cases, the first two steps of the pipeline are querying the required data and to apply specific transformations on it. Then, if the request was for a report there is the need of merging the queried data, while for the request of a model an algorithm to compute it is launched. Next, if the request was for a model, the result needs to be stored.<br> Finally, the pipeline ends with either the report or the model being generated.</p>

Data for: "Market Power and Price Exposure: Learning from Changes in Renewable Energy Regulation"

<p>Given the key role of renewable energies in current and future electricity markets, it is important to understand how they affect firms&#39; pricing incentives in these markets. In this paper, we study whether renewables depress electricity market prices, and how this effect depends on their degree of market price exposure. Our theoretical analysis shows that paying renewables with fixed prices, rather than with market-based prices, is relatively more effective at curbing market power when the dominant electricity firms own large shares of the renewable capacity, and&nbsp;<em>vice-versa</em>. To test this prediction, our empirical analysis leverages several short-lived changes to renewable energy pricing mechanisms in the Spanish electricity market. In this context, we find that the switch from full price exposure to fixed prices caused a 2-4% reduction in the average price-cost markup.</p>

<p>This file&nbsp;contains a data set of 632 medicines that entered the French market between 2008 to 2018. 529 medicines are single drugs and 103 are combination medicines. For each drug we present data on provenance (inventor of the drug) and sources referencing our searches for origins of each medicine. We also present added clinical benefit data for all 632 medicines based on HAS and Prescrire matched grading scale as well as therapeutic area of each medicinal product in which the clinical benefit grading was sourced (highest clinical benefit grading attained by the product in the indication based on Prescrire grading). The file also contains data on the medicines approved by the FDA in the United States</p>

Raw and Processed Data of Printed Markets - The Basel Avisblatt (1729-1845)

<p>Switzerland&#39;s first advertising journal &ndash; the so-called Avisblatt &ndash; was published in Basel. It is a typical example of a new market form emerging in 18th century Europe, yet it is also exceptional since all issues from 1729 to 1844/45 are preserved. In the SNF funded research project &ldquo;M&auml;rkte auf Papier&rdquo; at the University of Basel (PI: Prof. Dr. Susanna Burghartz), this serial source has been digitized and used to investigate economic, social and societal transformations of the early capitalist period in Basel. A database of all adverts and announcements was created, totalling 932&rsquo;000 records and providing different sorts of metadata for each advert. The dataset is made avaiable combined with analytical tools.</p> <ul> <li>first official, public release</li> <li>raw (OCR&#39;d) data, collections (data and meta data) and aggregated tables</li> <li>read and process conveniently with the avisblatt R package</li> </ul>

Coastal SEES Collaborative Research: Non-Market Value Meta-Data on Willingness to Pay for Coastal Marsh Habitat Change

These data represent a meta-dataset of observations on per household economic value - represented by per household willingness-to-pay (WTP) - for improvements in coastal marsh habitat, drawn from stated-preference studies in the research literature. The metadata allow estimation of benefit transfer functions via meta-regression modeling. Within these econometric functions, the dependent variable is a comparable estimate of economic value (e.g., WTP) drawn from extant primary valuation studies. Independent variables represent observable factors hypothesized to explain variation in this value measure across observations. These functions can be used to produce out-of-sample predictions of WTP for coastal marsh habitat improvements at sites for which no primary valuation studies have been conducted. They can also be used to understand the factors associated with systematic variations in marsh habitat values across different sites and studies. These data are described in Vedogbeton, H. and R.J. Johnston. 2020. Commodity Consistent Meta-Analysis of Wetland Values: An Illustration for Coastal Marsh Habitat. Environmental and Resource Economics 75(4), 835-865, and allow replication of the results presented therein. The metadata are extracted from primary studies that estimate total (use and nonuse) per household WTP for changes in the quantity or quality of coastal marsh wildlife habitats or their services, in US and Canada. These studies were identified via a systematic review of the literature. The metadata combine information provided by these primary non-market valuation studies with publicly available external data extracted from sources such as the US Census, US National Historical GIS (https://www.nhgis.org/), and US Fish and Wildlife Service National Wetlands Inventory (https://www.fws.gov/wetlands/Data/Mapper.html). Studies included in the metadata are restricted to those that estimate total per household WTP for coastal wetland habitat changes using generally acce
