Broughmore Wood 4 - Quern Stone Quarrying
A highly eroded surface that may originally had more carvings upon it. There is a large bowl shaped depression at the top of the outcrop with a central cup-like mark, which is probably where a quern stone has been extracted. There are also a couple of miniature quern stone rough-outs on the smoother surface just beneath the moss covering. A plan is now in the pipeline for a full excavation of the site, which it is hoped will shed more light on its chronology and, hopefully, reveal even of these more fascinating rock surfaces. <p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>New, distinctive, well preserved and previously undescribed constituents of a Middle Ordovician (middle Darriwilian, Dw2) radiolarian assemblage from the Table Cove Formation in Newfoundland are described. Place re-making and sense of place after quarrying and social-ecological restoration - dataset
<p>The dataset provides coded input data for the study "Place re-making and sense of place after quarrying and social-ecological restoration". In this study, we examine how people’s place making and sense of place are reconfigured through quarrying. We investigate perceptions of sense of place after quarrying and social-ecological restoration in a limestone region of the Czech Karst in the Czech Republic. The dataset contains the result of our survey of 400 participants - visitors to the PLA Czech Karst who visited one of the eight study quarries and were questioned in the quarry. When selecting participants for our study, purposive sampling was applied to receive a gender-balanced sample of participants of various ages. We used a paper questionnaire suitable for the data collection directly in the field. The questionnaire was anonymous. </p>

Dun Creagach 3 - Quernstone Quarried Rock
This rock in Sutherland was discovered by NOSAS this year (2020) on a rock art recording visit for ScRAP. I visited it on 7th November to examine its similarities with the quarried outcrops at Broughmore Wood near Stirling, for which excavation is now underway. Rubha nam Brathairean, Skye - Quern Quarry
Rubha nam Brathairean quern quarry is on the shore below a small headland jutting out from the Trotternish Peninsula. It was only identified in 2007. The date is unknown but there were many hundreds, possibly thousands taken from this spot, which is very difficult to access and is largely covered twice a day by the tide. The querns are very consistent in size. I measured quite a number of the blanks and most were 43cm in diameter. They seem to range up to this from about 35-38cm. To my mind, this is a Viking-age quarry. It is avery similar to others such sites in norway - notably the Hyllestad World Heritage Site. Determining the Impacts of Stone Quarry Works On Riparian Vegetation of River Molo in Rongai Sub-County, Nakuru County, Kenya
<p>The contribution made by stone quarrying to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in many countries globally is enormous. Whether small or large-scale, stone quarrying is inherently disruptive and can cause detrimental effects on the fragile riparian vegetation. This research therefore, aimed at determining the status of riparian vegetation between 2000- 2023 along river Molo and establishing the effects of stone quarry works on riparian vege-tation. A descriptive survey design was adopted where 404 household heads were randomly sampled from a total of 35,545 households in Visoi, Soin and Mosop wards. 15 key informants were purposively sampled for interviews. Questionnaires, interview schedules and Geographical Information System (GIS) and Remote sensing (RS) instruments were used in data collection. The obtained data was analyzed using SPSS (Version 25), ArchMap and remote sensing (time series) to analyze changes in riparian vegetation using the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). The findings revealed a significant decline in riparian vegetation attributed to land use changes driven by poor agricultural practices and quarrying activities. The five purposively selected quarries were found to be located between 49 - 330 meters away from the river, where one was abandoned with no sign of reclamation, thus directly affecting the health and integrity of the riparian vegetation. It was also noted that massive heaping of quarry overburden and deep excavation accelerated felling of trees, reduced natural regeneration and increased soil erosion. These findings will be useful to inform the best quarrying practices to reduce detrimental impacts on riparian vegetation and a foundation for policy development in quarrying sector at county and national level.</p>
Mead's Quarry Coassembly (Metagenomic)
<p>Metagenomic coassembly (final.contigs.fa) of 2022 (n = 2) and 2024 (n = 4) sequencing libraries generated by the 2024 MICR 669 Advanced Techniques in Field Microbiology course (Microbiology Department, University of Tennessee Knoxville). This coassembly was made publicly available to coincide with the manuscript submitted to Harmful Algae. The protein sequences (proteins.faa) and nucleotide sequences (nucleotides.fna) that were determined from called open reading frames are also included. </p>
Altitude gradient pattern of grassland restoration of quarry on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau
<p>It is very difficult to recover the alpine grassland on the Qinghai Tibet Plateau after being destroyed. However, the demand for economic construction forced the government to build highways on the Qinghai Tibet Plateau, leaving behind many quarries. However, it is uncertain whether these quarries can be restored and the extent of restoration. This study conducts a transect survey of 39 quarry-restored grasslands reseeded with Elymus nutans and adjacent natural grasslands on two recently constructed highways on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau from 2800 to 5100 m above sea level. The first data set is the community survey data set of height, in which the rows describe the species names in the sample plots, the sample plots shown in the list and duplicates. The second data set is the community survey data set of coverage, in which the rows describe the species names in the sample plots, the sample plots shown in the list and duplicates. We believe that the height and coverage were not enough to evaluate the restoration, and the community species composition of the restored grassland was an important indicator to evaluate the restoration.</p>

Data from: Paleocommunity analysis of the Burgess Shale Tulip Beds, Mount Stephen, British Columbia: comparison with the Walcott Quarry and implications for community variation in the Burgess Shale
The Tulip Beds locality on Mount Stephen (Yoho National Park, British Columbia) yields one of the most abundant and diverse (~10,000 specimens in 110 taxa) Burgess Shale fossil assemblages in the Canadian Rockies. Detailed semi quantitative and quantitative analyses of this assemblage suggest strong similarities with the Walcott Quarry on Fossil Ridge. Both assemblages are dominated by epibenthic, sessile, and suspension feeding taxa, mostly represented by arthropods and sponges and have comparable diversity patterns, despite sharing only about half the genera. However, the Tulip Beds has a higher relative abundance of suspension feeders and taxa of unknown affinity compared to the Walcott Quarry. These biotic variations are probably largely attributable to ecological and evolutionary differences between the two temporally distinct communities that adapted to similar, but not identical, environmental settings. For instance, the Tulip Beds is farther away from the Cathedral Escarpment than the Walcott Quarry. The Tulip Beds and Walcott Quarry assemblages are more similar to each other than either one is to the assemblages of the Chengjiang biota, although the relative diversity of major taxonomic groups and ecological patterns are similar in all assemblages. The conserved diversity patterns and ecological structures among sites suggest that the ecological composition of Cambrian Burgess Shale-type communities was relatively stable across wide geographic and temporal scales.
Data from: A juvenile turtle (Testudines, Eucryptodira) from the Upper Jurassic of the Langenberg Quarry, Oker, Northern Germany
Turtles are frequently found in fluviatile to lagoonal and shallow marine sediments in the Upper Jurassic of Western Europe. These turtles usually show a mixture of basal and derived characters, but phylogenetic relationships are still largely unresolved. This is mainly due to the incompleteness of fossils and the lack of taxonomically unambiguous characters and is also related to the presence of different ontogenetic stages, which are not easy to compare. The morphological description of a new turtle from the Upper Jurassic of Langenberg Quarry (Oker, Lower Saxony, Germany) gives further insights into the ontogeny of basal eucryptodire turtles as well as into aquatic adaptation of Upper Jurassic turtles. The specimen is herein left in open nomenclature, due to the fact that it represents a juvenile individual. Several characters define the specimen as juvenile: its small size (7.28 cm carapace length); lateral carapacial fontanelles; enlarged vertebral scutes; a radial striation pattern covering the entire carapace; and the grade of ossification of preserved skull and limb elements. A clear aquatic adaptation of the individual is the elongated manus, a feature that is independent of ontogenetic age. The elongated manus may indicate a marine lifestyle and the individual possibly inhabited nearshore to offshore areas around the former Jurassic islands, which today form the Saxony Basin. The ossification pattern of the carapace of this eucryptodire turtle resembles that of known Jurassic paracryptodires and thus provides new insights to the ontogeny of Jurassic turtles.
