Well-being at the Frontlines: Leadership Strategies for Building Up Strong Resources Among Emergency Responders: Online Supplement

<p>This is the online supplement for a mixed-methods article on resource-oriented leadership in emergency organizations.</p> <p><em>Abstract:&nbsp;</em>Repeated exposure to extreme events and other demanding missions can erode protective resources among emergency responders, causing health problems that, in turn, jeopardize their readiness and performance. Using a mixed-methods approach, this article examines how leaders of emergency responders can systematically maintain and even enhance their subordinates&rsquo; well-being. To identify effective leadership strategies, we conducted in-depth interviews with 25 fire chiefs, 25 platoon leaders, and 26 subordinates from the German fire services. Employing the critical incident technique, we explored leadership processes both during emergency situations and during interim phases (training, standby time, etc.). Person-oriented leadership (developing, group-serving, and caring behavior) was described as fostering various resource gains, while task-oriented leadership (directive and problem-solving behavior) was reported to mitigate resource threats. Moreover, the interviews underscore the importance of interim phases in enhancing well-being. A cross-sectional survey with firefighters and members of a technical relief organization (N = 459) supported the qualitative findings. We integrate our results into a framework that links leadership in emergency organizations to subordinates&rsquo; well-being and readiness in demanding work contexts. Genomic resources of the Podospora anserina species complex

<p>The filamentous fungus <em>Podospora anserina</em> is a model organism used extensively in the study of molecular biology, senescence, prion biology, meiotic drive, mating-type chromosome evolution, and plant biomass degradation. It has recently been established that <em>P. anserina</em> is a member of a complex of seven, closely related species. In addition to <em>P. anserina</em>, high-quality genomic resources are available for two of these taxa. Here we provide chromosome-level annotated assemblies of the four remaining species of the complex, as well as a comprehensive dataset of annotated assemblies from a total of 28 <em>Podospora</em> genomes.</p>

Ecological forecasts for marine resource management during climate extremes

<p><span>Forecasting weather has become commonplace, but as society faces novel and uncertain environmental conditions there is a critical need to forecast ecology. Forewarning of ecosystem conditions during climate extremes can support proactive decision-making, yet applications of ecological forecasts are still limited. We showcase the capacity for existing marine management tools to transition to a forecasting configuration and provide skilful ecological forecasts up to 12 months in advance. The management tools use ocean temperature anomalies to help mitigate whale entanglements and sea turtle bycatch, and we show that forecasts can forewarn of human-wildlife interactions caused by unprecedented climate extremes. <span>We further show that regionally downscaled forecasts are not a necessity for ecological forecasting and can be less skilful than global forecasts if they have fewer ensemble members.</span> Our results highlight capacity for ecological forecasts to be explored for regions without the infrastructure or capacity to regionally downscale, ultimately helping to improve marine resource management and climate adaptation globally.</span></p>

Dataset for: Cattle aggregations at shared resources create potential parasite exposure hotspots for wildlife

<p>Globally rising livestock populations and declining wildlife numbers are likely to dramatically change disease risk for wildlife and livestock, especially at resources where they congregate. However, limited understanding of interspecific transmission dynamics at these hotspots hinders disease prediction or mitigation. In this study, we combined gastrointestinal nematode density and host foraging activity measurements from our prior work in this system with three estimates of parasite-sharing capacity to investigate how interspecific exposures alter the relative riskiness of an important resource – water – among cattle and five dominant herbivore species in an East African tropical savanna. </p> <p>We found that due to their high parasite output, water dependence, and parasite-sharing capacity, cattle greatly increased potential parasite exposures at water sources for wild ruminants. When untreated for parasites, cattle accounted for over two-thirds of total potential exposures around water for wild ruminants, driving 2–23-fold increases in relative exposure levels at water sources. Simulated changes in wildlife and cattle ratios showed that water sources become increasingly important hotspots of interspecific transmission for wild ruminants when the relative abundance of cattle parasites increases. These results emphasize that livestock have significant potential to alter the level and distribution of parasite exposures across the landscape for wild ruminants.</p>

WaivOps EDM-TR9: Open Audio Resources for Machine Learning in Music

<p><strong>EDM-TR9 Dataset</strong></p> <p>EDM-TR9 is an open audio dataset composed of a series of drum recordings in the style of electronic dance music (EDM). This dataset primarily focuses on the distinctive sounds and rhythm patterns of the Roland TR-909 drum machine within the subgenres of dance, house and techno music. The dataset contains 3780 audio loops recorded in uncompressed stereo WAV format, produced with custom drum samples and MIDI-programmed rhythms at various tempo rates.</p> <p><strong>Dataset</strong></p> <p>The primary objective of this dataset is to provide accessible content for machine learning applications in music and audio research. Feral pig (Sus scrofa) disturbance facilitates establishment of resource-acquisitive species in Hawaiian forest understories

<p>In this study, we quantify the effects of leaf traits and dispersal attributes on species responses to pig soil disturbance at two spatial scales – 0.5 m<sup>2</sup> patches embedded along 20 m transects within sites – across a gradient of pig density in a Hawaiian montane wet forest using Bayesian mixed models. </p> <p>Native and non-native species demonstrated divergent responses, with increasing presence and abundance of non-native species in the understory as soil disturbance within patches and sites increased. Dominant patterns in measured traits tracked the leaf economic spectrum (LES), with non-native species tending toward resource-acquisitive traits. Species with resource-acquisitive traits, regardless of identity, were favored with disturbance and responded positively to light availability in disturbed sites. Models showed species primarily dispersed by wind were more prevalent in disturbed patches and sites than those dispersed by endozoochory, while seed mass had no effect.</p>

Data from: A new trophic specialization buffers a top predator against climate-driven resource instability

<p>Intraspecific phenotypic variability is key to respond to environmental changes and anomalies. However, documenting the emergence of behavioral diversification in natural populations has remained elusive due to the difficulty of observing such phenomenon at the right time and place. Here, we investigated how the emergence of a new trophic strategy in a population subjected to high fluctuations in the availability of its main trophic resource (migrating songbirds) affected the breeding performance, population structure, and population fitness of a specialized color polymorphic predator, the Eleonora's falcon from the Canary Islands. Using long-term data (2007-2022), we found that the exploitation of an alternative prey (a local petrel species) was associated with the growth of a previously residual falcon colony. Pairs in this colony laid earlier and raised more fledglings than in the other established colonies. The specialization on petreles increased over time, independently of annual fluctuations in prey availability. Importantly, however, the positive effect of petrel consumption on productivity was stronger in years with lower food availability. This trophic diversification was further associated with the genetically-determined color morph, with dark individuals preying more frequently on petreles than pale ones, which might promote the long-term maintenance of genotypic and phenotypic diversity. We empirically demonstrate how the emergence of an alternative trophic strategy can buffer populations against harsh environmental fluctuations by stabilizing their productivity.</p>

High-density genetic linkage mapping in Sitka spruce advances the integration of genomic resources in conifers

<p><span>In species with large and complex genomes such as conifers, dense linkage maps are a useful for supporting genome assembly and laying the genomic groundwork at the structural, populational and functional levels. However, most of the 600+ extant conifer species still lack extensive genotyping resources, which hampers the development of high-density linkage maps. In this study, </span><span><span>we developed a linkage map relying on 21,570 SNP makers in </span></span><span>Sitka spruce (<em>Picea sitchensis</em> [Bong.] Carr.)</span><span><em><span>, </span></em></span><span><span>a long-lived conifer from western North America that is widely planted for productive forestry in the British Isles. </span></span><span>We used a single-step mapping approach to efficiently combine RAD-Seq and genotyping array SNP data for 528 individuals from two full-sib families. As expected for spruce taxa, the saturated map contained 12 linkages groups with a total length of 2,142 cM. The positioning of 5,414 unique gene coding sequences allowed us to compare our map with that of other Pinaceae species, which provided evidence for high levels of synteny and gene order conservation in this family. We then developed an integrated map for <em>P. sitchensis</em> and <em>P. glauca</em> based on 27,052 makers and 11,609 gene sequences. Altogether, these two linkage maps, the accompanying catalog of 286,159 SNPs and the genotyping chip developed herein opens new perspectives for a variety of fundamental and more applied research objectives, such as for the improvement of spruce genome assemblies, or for marker-assisted sustainable management of genetic resources in Sitka spruce and related species.</span></p>

Data for: Nonrandom foraging and resource distributions

<p>Nonrandom foraging can cause animals to aggregate in resource-dense areas, increasing host density, contact rates, and pathogen transmission, but when should nonrandom foraging and resource distributions also have density-independent effects? Here, we used a factorial experiment with constant resource and host densities to quantify host contact rates across seven resource distributions. We also used an agent-based model to compare pathogen transmission when host movement was based on random foraging, optimal foraging, or something between those states. Nonrandom foraging strongly depressed contact rates and transmission relative to the classic random movement assumptions used in most epidemiological models. Given nonrandom foraging in the ABM and experiment, contact rates and transmission increased with resource aggregation and average distance to resource patches due to increased host movement in search of resources. Overall, we describe three density-independent mechanisms by which host behavior and resource distributions alter contact rate functions and pathogen transmission.</p>

Resources for: Spatio-temporal integrated Bayesian species distribution models reveal lack of broad relationships between traits and range shifts

<p><strong>Aim</strong>: Climate change and habitat loss or degradation are some of the greatest threats that species face today, often resulting in range shifts. Species traits have been discussed as important predictors of range shifts, with the identification of general trends being of great interest for conservation efforts. However, studies reviewing relationships between traits and range shifts have questioned the existence of such generalized trends, due to mixed results and weak correlations, as well as analytical shortcomings. The aim of this study was to test this relationship empirically, using analytical approaches that account for common sources of bias when assessing range trends.<br><strong>Location</strong>: Tanzania, East Africa.<br><strong>Time period</strong>: 1980-1999 and 2000-2020.<br><strong>Major taxa studied</strong>: 57 savannah specialist birds found in Tanzania, belonging to 26 families and 11 orders.<br><strong>Methods</strong>: We applied recently developed integrated spatio-temporal species distribution models in R-INLA, combining citizen science and bird atlas data to estimate ranges of species, quantify range shifts, and test the predictive power of traditional trait groups, as well as exposure-related and sensitivity traits. We based our study on 40 years of bird observations in East African savannahs, a biome that has experienced increasing climatic and non-climatic pressures over recent decades. We correlated patterns of change with species traits.<br><strong>Results</strong>: We find indications of relationships identified by previous research, but low average explanatory power of traits from an ecological perspective, confirming the lack of meaningful general associations. However, our analysis finds compelling species-specific results.<br><strong>Main conclusions</strong>: We highlight the importance of individual assessments, while demonstrating the usefulness of our analytical approach for analyses of range shifts.</p>

Data from: Seasonal bee communities vary in their responses to resources at local and landscape scales: Implication for land managers

<p><strong>Context</strong>:<em> </em>There is great interest in land management practices for pollinators; however, a quantitative comparison of landscape and local effects on bee communities is necessary to determine if adding small habitat patches can increase bee abundance or species richness. The value of increasing floral abundance at a site is undoubtedly influenced by the phenology and magnitude of floral resources in the landscape, but due to the complexity of measuring landscape-scale resources, these factors have been understudied.</p> <p><strong>Objectives</strong>: To address this knowledge gap, we quantified the relative importance of local versus landscape scale resources for bee communities, identified the most important metrics of local and landscape quality, and evaluated how these relationships vary with season.</p> <p><strong>Methods</strong>: We studied season-specific relationships between local and landscape quality and wild-bee communities at 33 sites in the Finger Lakes region of New York, USA. We paired site surveys of wild bees, plants, and soil characteristics with a multi-dimensional assessment of landscape composition, configuration, insecticide toxic load, and a spatio-temporal evaluation of floral resources at local and landscape scales.</p> <p><strong>Results</strong>:<em> </em>We found that the most relevant spatial scale and landscape factor varied by season. Early-season bee communities responded primarily to landscape resources, including the presence of flowering trees and wetland habitats.  In contrast, mid to late-season bee communities were more influenced by local conditions, though bee diversity was negatively impacted when sites were embedded in highly agricultural landscapes. Soil composition had complex impacts on bee communities, and likely reflects effects on plant community flowering. </p> <p><strong>Conclusions</strong>:<em> </em>Early-season bees can be supported by adding flowering trees and wetlands, while mid to late-season bees can be supported by local addition of summer and fall flowering plants. Sites embedded in landscapes with a greater proportion of natural areas will host a greater bee species diversity.</p>

Generation of a network slicing dataset: the foundations for AI-based B5G resource management

<p><span>This paper introduces a comprehensive network slicing dataset designed to empower artificial intelligence (AI), and other data-based resource management and network performance prediction applications, in 5G and beyond (B5G) networks. The dataset, generated through a packet-level simulator, captures the complexities of network slicing considering the three main network slice types defined by 3GPP: Enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB), Ultra-Reliable Low Latency Communications (URLLC), and Massive Internet of Things (mIoT). It includes a wide range of network scenarios with varying topologies, slice instances, and traffic flows. The included scenarios consist of transport networks, excluding the RAN infrastructure.</span></p> <p><span>Each sample consists of pairs of (network scenario, performance metrics). The network configuration includes network topology, traffic characteristics, routing configurations, while the performance metrics are the delay, jitter, and loss for each flow. The dataset is generated with a custom network slicing admission control module, enabling the simulation of realistic scenarios without violating SLAs.</span></p> <p><span>This network slicing dataset is a valuable asset for the research community, unlocking opportunities for innovations in 5G and B5G networks.</span></p>
