Invereen Pictish Symbol Stone
Canmore 14139: Invereen, Inverness-shire, Pictish symbol stone. Measurements: H 1.00m, W 0.80m, D 0.15m, : red sandstone, Place of discovery: NH 7968 3108 Present location: National Museums Scotland (X.IB 227). Found during ploughing in 1932 on the west side of the River Findhorn near Invereen, Moy, Scotland. This slab is incised with an ornamented crescent and V-rod symbol over a relatively larger double-disc and Z-rod symbol. To the left of the top symbol is incised a vertical shaft which enters a circle at the top, where damage obscures the left-hand half of the circle. Date: seventh or eighth century. Pictish Symbol Stone 1, St Fergus', Dyce
Pictish Symbol Stone 1, Saint Fergus' Church, Dyce, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. This symbol stone is said to have been found in the glebe, and, until it was placed under the Ancient Monuments Act in 1890, it was built into the E wall of the churchyard; it is now preserved within the old church. It is a slab of grey granite, of approximately rectangular shape, rounded at one end, 5ft 6ins (1.67m) long by 2ft 3ins (0.7m) wide, sculptured with incised lines on one (front) face bearing, at the top, the elephant symbol and, below it, the double-disc and Z-rod symbol. Pictish Symbol Stone No.4, Inveravon Kirk, Moray
The four Inveravon Class I Incised Pictish Symbol stones, dating from perhaps the 6th-7th Century AD, were set against the south wall of Inveravon Church. The Church is a Category B Listed Building dating from 1806 but sitting on and near the remains of earlier Churches: the earliest existing record of St Peters Church Inveravon dating back to 1108. Tullich 1 (St Nathalan), Aberdeenshire, Pictish symbol stone Measurements: H 1.76m, W 0.49m, D 0.15m Stone type: Andalusite staurolite schist Place of discovery: NO 3905 9754 Present location: in a new display shelter adjacent to the kirkyard. Evidence for discovery: found in 1866 re-used in the blocking of a doorway in the north wall of the church. It was removed and set in a railed enclosure against the north wall. Present condition: trimmed along all four edges for secondary use, and the surface is weathered. Description This was a tall slab incised with three Pictish symbols: double disc and Z-rod above a Pictish beast, with a mirror below. The discs have an inner concentric circle and a central compass pit. The beast faces right, and the centrally placed mirror has an inner concentric circle and a double ball handle. Rodney's Stone, 9thC Pictish Symbol Stone
Located at Brodie Castle, Moray, Scotland. H 1.90m +, W 1.05m tapering upwards to 0.95m, D 0.12m grey sandstone This rectangular slab is carved in relief on both broad faces within a flatband moulding. The moulding has been used for to incise three ogham inscriptions, one along the right-hand side of face A and two on either side of face C, which together represent the longest ogham inscription in Scotland. The inscription is largely unintelligible but includes the personal name Ethernan . A cross with open circular armpits spans the length and breadth of face A, framed by a roll moulding. It is filled entirely with interlaced knotwork. Back face has three huge Pictish symbols one above the other: a pair of S-dragons, a Pictish beast facing right and a double disc and Z-rod, all heavily ornamented (the lower part of the Z-rod is missing). Rhynie, St Luag's Churchyard, Rhynie, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. 1.3m tall, is irregularly shaped but has been well prepared for the carving. It carries a depiction of the head of a "beast", in this case probably intended to represent a seal or an otter, and it also carries a typical abstract Pictish symbols, a double disc and Z-rod, mirror and a comb. 7th century. Anomaly Detection and Diagnosis Algorithms for Discrete Symbols
We present a set of novel algorithms which we call sequenceMiner that detect and characterize anomalies in large sets of high-dimensional symbol sequences that arise from recordings of switch sensors in the cockpits of commercial airliners. While the algorithms we present are general and domain-independent, we focus on a specific problem that is critical to determining the system-wide health of a fleet of aircraft. The approach taken uses unsupervised clustering of sequences using the normalized length of the longest common subsequence (nLCS) as a similarity measure, followed by detailed outlier analysis to detect anomalies. In this method, an outlier sequence is defined as a sequence that is far away from the cluster centre. We present new algorithms for outlier analysis that provide comprehensible indicators as to why a particular sequence is deemed to be an outlier. The algorithms provide a coherent description to an analyst of the anomalies in the sequence when compared to more normal sequences. In the final section of the paper we demonstrate the effectiveness of sequenceMiner for anomaly detection on a real set of discrete sequence data from a fleet of commercial airliners. We show that sequenceMiner discovers actionable and operationally significant safety events. We also compare our innovations with standard HiddenMarkov Models, and show that our methods are superior.

Symbolic Analysis of the Heart Rate Variability During the Plateau Phase Following Maximal Sprint Exercise.

PMID: 33833687; PMCID: PMC8021730.</p> <p>Cardiac autonomic control is commonly assessed <em>via</em> the analysis of fluctuations of the temporal distance between two consecutive R-waves (RR). Cardiac regulation assessment following high intensity physical exercise is difficult due to RR non-stationarities. The very short epoch following maximal sprint exercise when RR remains close to its lowest value, i.e., the PLATEAU, provides the opportunity to evaluate cardiac regulation from stationary RR sequences. The aim of the study is to evaluate cardiac autonomic control during PLATEAU phase following 60-m maximal sprint and compare the results to those derived from sequences featuring the same length as the PLATEAU and derived from pre-exercise and post-exercise periods. These sequences were referred to as PRE and POST sequences. RR series were recorded in 21 subjects (age: 24.9 ± 5.1 years, 15 men and six women). We applied a symbolic approach due to its ability to deal with very short RR sequences. The symbolic approach classified patterns formed by three RRs according to the sign and number of RR variations. Symbolic markers were compared to more classical time and frequency domain indexes. Comparison was extended to simulated signals to explicitly evaluate the suitability of methods to deal with short variability series. A surrogate test was applied to check the null hypothesis of random fluctuations. Over simulated data symbolic analysis was able to separate dynamics with different spectral profiles provided that the frame length was longer than 10 cardiac beats. Over real data the surrogate test indicated the presence of determinism in PRE, PLATEAU, and POST sequences. We found that the rate of patterns with two variations with unlike sign increased during PLATEAU and in POST sequences and the frequency of patterns with no variations remained unchanged during PLATEAU and decreased in POST compared to PRE sequences. Results indicated a sustained sympathetic control along with an early vagal reactivation during PLATEAU and a shift of the sympathovagal balance toward vagal predominance in POST compared to PRE sequences. Time and frequency domains markers were less powerful because they were dominated by the dramatic decrease of RR variance during PLATEAU.</p>

UMD-350MB: Refined MIDI Dataset for Symbolic Music Generation
<p><strong>UMD-350MB</strong></p> <p>The Universal MIDI Dataset 350MB (UMD-350MB) is a proprietary collection of 85,618 MIDI files curated for research and development within our organization. This collection is a subset sampled from a larger dataset developed for pretraining symbolic music models.</p> <p>The field of symbolic music generation is constrained by limited data compared to language models. Publicly available datasets, such as the Lakh MIDI Dataset, offer large collections of MIDI files sourced from the web. While the sheer volume of musical data might appear beneficial, the actual amount of valuable data is less than anticipated, as many songs contain less desirable melodies with erratic and repetitive events.</p> <p>The UMD-350MB employs an attention-based approach to achieve more desirable output generations by focusing on human-reviewed training examples of single-track melodies, chord progressions, leads and arpeggios with an average duration of 8 bars. This was achieved by refining the dataset over 24 months, ensuring consistent quality and tempo alignment.
