Field measurements of moisture content of dead leaves of Pinus pinaster (2014-2023)

The Association for the Development of Industrial Aerodynamics - Forest Fire Research Centre (ADAI-CEIF) has developed a daily measurement program for the moisture content of a set of representative fine fuels in forests of Central Portugal since 1987. The sampling site is located is in Lousã, and samples are collected daily during the main fire season (15th of May - 15th of October) and twice a week for the rest of the year. These samples are then analyzed at the Laboratory for Forest Fire Studies (LEIF), located less than 1km from the sampling plot.

As part of a study named "The role of field measurements of fine dead fuels moisture content in the Canadian Fire Weather Index System – a case study in the Central Region of Portugal" (https://doi.org/10.3390/f15081429) we present the field measurements of surface litter (Pinus pinaster) carried out from 2014 to 2023. Based on this dataset, the study proposes a correction for the moisture factor (mf) in the Fine Fuel Moisture Code (FFMC) of the Canadian Fire Weather Index System (CFWIS). This moisture correction was used to directly determine the Initial Spread Index (ISI) and, subsequently, the Fire Weather Index (FWI).

Acknowledgments:

We gratefully acknowledge the researchers and laboratory technicians of the ADAI-CEIF team, who dedicated part of their time to the field collection of samples to determine the moisture content of forest fuels in Lousã (Coimbra, Portugal). In particular, we would like to thank the MCFIRE project (PCIF/MPG/0108/2017, https://mcfire.adai.pt/) for coordinating and supporting these measurements from 2019 to 2023. We also gratefully acknowledge the ongoing efforts of Nuno Luís and João Carvalho in ensuring the collection and processing of samples in the laboratory.

Velocity and concentration measurements of passive tracer above gravelly seabeds under the wave influence

General description:
This dataset was compiled and generated by Helena Stirnweiß as part of a series of Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and Laser-Induced Fluorescence (LIF) experiments conducted at the Institute of Fluid Mechanics at the University of Rostock. All data included herein is original and was acquired under controlled laboratory conditions.

The experiments were conducted for 21 individual configurations of 3 different wave scenarios (description can be found in 'overview_wavescenarios.csv') and 7 seabed models (description can be found in 'overview_seabedmodels.csv'). The folders where the data is stored are named accordingly '[name of seabed model]_[name of wave scenario]'.

Horizontal (u [m/s]) and vertical (w [m/s]) velocities were measured simultaneously to the concentration (c [l/l]) of a tracer fluid released from the seabed. The collected data was analyzed and phase averages and phase-resolved covariances were derived and are given for the field of view of each configuration as .npy-files in the respective folder.
Time-averaged and horizontally averaged profiles were determined for the concentration and all covariances in dependence on the bottom distance. The profiles are stored as .npy-files in the respective Folders.

Mass mixing length (l_c) and Eddy diffusivity (D_t) profiles were derived for each configuration from the measured data as described in the corresponding article. The variables are given in dependence on the bottom distance as .npy-files in the respective folder. Slopes of the vertical mass mixing length profiles and Eddy diffusivity profiles from linear regression are given in 'slopes_turbmodels.csv'.

TIME-RESOLVED DATA IS NOT PROVIDED IN THIS DATASET DUE TO EXTENSIVE DATA SIZE but will be shared upon request. New advance in land controlled-source audio-frenquency magnetotellurics exploration: measurement at a shortened transmitter-receiver offset and three-dimensional inversion

Ambient noise significantly affects the quality of land controlled-source audio-frequency magnetotellurics (CSAMT) data. Shortening the transmitter–receiver offset can enhance the raw data signal-to-noise ratios (S/N). However, most of CSAMT explorations still collect field data using a large separation. To enhance the S/N of the raw electric and magnetic field and the corresponding Cagniard apparent resistivity, we propose shortening offset to 2–4 km during CSAMT fieldwork and inverting apparent resistivity rather than only electric field. We tested this approach with three experimental models with varying offsets, simulating 3D responses. Result showed that longer offsets predominantly produce data anomalies in the far-field zone, whereas shorter offsets shift these anomalies toward the transition zone with some in the far-field or near-field zones. Shortened-offset responses exhibit stronger electric and magnetic fields. Synthetic datasets with different noise levels were generated for inversion analysis. The results indicate that shortening the offset, particularly in noisy environments, improves data S/N. Inversion results reveal that a shortened CSAMT transmitter–receiver offset allows for data collection with most anomalies in the transition-field zone, facilitating accurate prediction of the true model in the 3D inversion. In low-noise environments, inversion results from data with a shortened offset are comparable to those with a long offset. However, in high-noise environments, the shortened-offset approach yields more accurate results due to improved data S/N. Field data inversion from Yanqing, China, further confirms the effectiveness of our scheme. The shortened-offset approach achieves higher S/N datasets and inversion results that align with actual geological structures.
