Figure data and analysis for: The effect of grain size on porewater radiolysis

<p>The radiolysis of porewaters by uranium, thorium, and potassium in mineral grains is a recognised source of molecular hydrogen in rock- and sediment-hosted fluids. This radiolytic hydrogen is of geomicrobiological interest as a potential energy source (electron donor) for microbial metabolism, especially in energy-limited settings such as the marine deep biosphere or the subsurface of Mars. Previous efforts to predict the production of radiolytic hydrogen from columns of rock and sediment have tended to rely upon analytic models that cannot account for the attenuation of mineral radiation by grains larger than ~30 microns. To address this, we have developed a Monte Carlo method to simulate the physics of mineral radiation and evaluate the production of H<sub>2</sub> as a function of mineral grain size and radioisotope composition. The results confirm that grain size is a major control on radiolytic H<sub>2</sub> yield. For example, using the standard geological classification of grain sizes, we find that clay can produce up to an order of magnitude more H<sub>2</sub> per unit time than sand. The magnitude of this effect is illustrated using compositional data from real geological units in order to demonstrate the dependence of radiolytic hydrogen flux on natural radionuclide concentration and bulk porosity.</p>

Tumor-induced Osteomalacia: A Systematic Review and Individual Patient's Data Analysis

<p>Abstract Context Tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) is a rare paraneoplastic syndrome, usually caused by small, benign, and slow-growing phosphaturic mesenchymal tumors. Clinically, TIO is characterized by renal phosphate leak, causing hypophosphatemia and osteomalacia. This review was performed to assess the clinical characteristics of TIO patients described worldwide so far. Evidence Acquisition On June 26, 2021, a systematic search was performed in Medline, Google Scholar, Google book, and Cochrane Library using the terms: "tumor induced osteomalacia," "oncogenic osteomalacia," "hypophosphatemia." There were no language restrictions. This review was performed according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses criteria. Evidence Results Overall, 1725 TIO cases were collected. TIO was more frequent in adult men, who showed a higher incidence of fractures compared with TIO women. The TIO-causing neoplasms were identified in 1493 patients. The somatostatin receptor-based imaging modalities have the highest sensitivity for the identification of TIO-causing neoplasms. TIO-causing neoplasms were equally located in bone and soft tissues; the latter showed a higher prevalence of fractures and deformities. The surgery is the preferred TIO definitive treatment (successful in &amp;gt; 90% of patients). Promising nonsurgical therapies are treatments with burosumab in TIO patients with elevated fibroblast growth factor-23 levels, and with radiolabeled somatostatin analogs in patients with TIO-causing neoplasm identified by somatostatin receptor-based imaging techniques. Conclusion TIO occurs preferentially in adult men. The TIO clinical expressiveness is more severe in men as well as in patients with TIO-causing neoplasms located in soft tissues. Treatments with burosumab and with radiolabeled somatostatin analogs are the most promising nonsurgical therapies.</p>

Data from: Whole genome sequencing and phylogenomic analysis show support for the splitting of genus Pythium

<p>The genus <em>Pythium</em><span> (nom. cons.) sensu lato (s.l.) is composed of many important species of plant pathogens. Early molecular phylogenetic studies suggested paraphyly of </span><em>Pythium</em><span>, which led to a formal proposal by Uzuhashi and colleagues in 2010 to split the genus into </span><em>Pythium</em><span> sensu stricto (s.s.), </span><em>Elongisporangium, Globisporangium, Ovatisporangium</em><span> (= </span><em>Phytopythium</em><span>), and </span><em>Pilasporangium</em><span> using morphological characters and phylogenies of the mt cytochrome </span><em>c</em><span> oxidase subunit 2 (</span><em>cox2</em><span>) and D1–D2 domains of nuc 28S rDNA. Although the split was fairly justified by the delineating morphological characters, there were weaknesses in the molecular analyses, which created reluctance in the scientific community to adopt these new genera for the description of new species. In this study, this issue was addressed using phylogenomics. Whole genomes of 109 strains of </span><em>Pythium</em><span> and close relatives were sequenced, assembled, and annotated. These data were combined with 10 genomes sequenced in previous studies. Phylogenomic analyses were performed with 148 single-copy genes represented in at least 90% of the taxa in the data set. The results showed support for the division of </span><em>Pythium</em><span> s.l. The status of alternative generic names that have been used for species of </span><em>Pythium</em><span> in the past (e.g., </span><em>Artotrogus, Cystosiphon, Eupythium, Nematosporangium, Rheosporangium, Sphaerosporangium</em><span>) was investigated. Based on our molecular analyses and review of the </span><em>Pythium</em><span> generic concepts, we urge the scientific community to adopt the generic names </span><em>Pythium, Elongisporangium, Globisporangium</em><span>, and their concepts as proposed by Uzuhashi and colleagues in 2010 in their work going forward. In order to consolidate the taxonomy of these genera, some of the recently described </span><em>Pythium</em><span> spp. are transferred to </span><em>Elongisporangium</em><span> and </span><em>Globisporangium</em><span>.</span></p>

Data from: Validity of bioelectrical impedance analysis in predicting total body water and adiposity among Senegalese school-aged children

Introduction: Childhood obesity is currently a serious public health challenge in developing countries. Therefore, an accurate assessment of adiposity is required. The objective of this study was to validate BIA prediction equations for the assessment of total body water and adiposity or percentage of body fat for the first time in Senegalese school-aged children. Methods: One-hundred-fifty-one (151) pupils who were 8-11 years old were randomly selected from four public schools in Dakar. The body composition measured by deuterium dilution method (DDM) was used as the reference method and compared to that predicted by BIA using a multi-frequency analyser. Stepwise backward multiple linear regression was performed to calculate TBW and %BF in a subsample, which were then validated it in the rest of the sample. The Bland and Altman approach was used to assess the agreement between the two methods (bias and limits of agreement). Results: FFM was higher in boys (24.6±6.9 kg) compared to girls (21.2±3.3 kg; P&lt;0.001), and %BF was lower in boys (5.1±4.6 kg) compared to girls (5.3±3.8 kg; P&lt;0.05). Overall, 11.3% of children were obese (%BF ≥25% in boys, and ≥30% in girls) and 4.6% were overweight/obese according to their BMI-z score (&gt;+1). The equations developed were as follows: TBW=0.376(Height²/Z50)-0.470 (sex) +0.076(weight) +0.065(height)-2.28. %BF= -1.10(height²/Z50) +3.14(sex)+1.57(weight)-4.347. These specific equations showed good precision and a low and non-significant mean bias (0.11 kg, P=0.279; and 0.19 kg, P=0.764) for TBW and %BF, respectively. Conclusion: The newly developed equations can be used as an accurate and alternative tool for screening for obesity among African school-aged children in various settings

Hereby, the required dynamic directionality is achieved via the system asymmetry created by periodic alteration of the effective coefficient of dry friction between the micropart and the platform. A mathematical model of conveying process is developed and solved numerically to determine the influence of frictional properties, friction control and sinusoidal excitation parameters on the conveying process characteristics. It was found that the velocity and direction of conveying can be easily controlled in a wide range by changing the phase shift between the function of the ef-fective dry friction coefficient and the function of horizon-tal sinusoidal displacement cycles as well as the duration of effective dry friction coefficient reduction. To test the theoretical findings in practise, an experimental setup for micropart conveying with controlled dry friction was created and build. The experimental results revealed the functional capabilities of the proposed method for micropart conveying by demonstrating how the velocity, direction and step size are controlled by regulating the parameters of friction control and sinusoidal excitation.<br> The proposed method can be practically used in conveying, feeding, manipulation and assembly systems for miniature and microparts in the mechatronics, electronic and other industries.</p>

Data from: Genome-wide analysis reveals demographic and life history patterns associated with habitat modification in land-locked, deep-spawning sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka)

<p>Human-mediated habitat fragmentation in freshwater ecosystems can negatively impact genetic diversity, demography and life history of native biota, while disrupting the behaviour of species that are dependent on spatial connectivity to complete their life cycles. In the Alouette River system (British Columbia, Canada), dam construction in 1928 impacted passage of anadromous sockeye salmon (<i>Oncorhynchus nerka</i>), with the last records of migrants occurring in the 1930's. Since that time, <i>O. nerka</i> persisted as a resident population in Alouette Reservoir until experimental water releases beginning in 2005 created conditions for migration; two years later, returning migrants were observed for the first time in ~70 years, raising important basic and applied questions regarding life history variation and population structure in this system. Here, we investigated the genetic distinctiveness and population history of Alouette Reservoir <i>O. nerka</i> using genome-wide SNP data (n=7,709 loci) collected for resident and migrant individuals, as well as for neighbouring anadromous sockeye salmon and resident kokanee populations within the Fraser River drainage (n=312 individuals). Bayesian clustering and principal components analyses based on neutral loci revealed five distinct clusters, largely associated with geography, and clearly demonstrated that Alouette Reservoir resident and migrant individuals are genetically distinct from other <i>O. nerka</i> populations in the Fraser River drainage. At a finer-level, there was no clear evidence for differentiation between Alouette Reservoir residents and migrants; although we detected eight high-confidence outlier loci, they all mapped to sex chromosomes suggesting that differences were likely due to uneven sex ratios rather than life history. Taken together, these data suggest that contemporary Alouette Reservoir <i>O. nerka</i> represents a landlocked sockeye salmon population, constituting the first reported instance of deep-water spawning behaviour associated with this life history form. This finding punctuates the need for re-assessment of conservation status and supports on-going fisheries management activities in Alouette Reservoir. </p>

Scalable mixed model approaches for set-based association studies on large-scale categorical data analysis and its application to 450k exome sequencing data in UK Biobank

<p>The ongoing release of large-scale sequencing data in the UK Biobank allows for identifying associations between rare variants and complex traits. SAIGE-GENE+ is a valid approach to conducting set-based association tests for quantitative and binary traits. However, for ordinal categorical phenotypes, applying SAIGE-GENE+ with treating the trait as quantitative or binarizing the trait can cause inflated type I error rates or power loss. In this study, we propose a novel method for rare-variant association tests, POLMM-GENE, in which a proportional odds logistic mixed model was used to characterize ordinal categorical phenotypes while adjusting for sample relatedness. POLMM-GENE fully utilizes the categorical nature of phenotypes and thus can well control type I error rates while remaining powerful. In the analyses of UK Biobank 450k whole exome-sequencing data for 5 ordinal categorical traits, POLMM-GENE identified 54 gene-phenotype associations.</p>
