Pino Gate Prairie Dog Study at the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico: Landscape Plot Lizard Data (2001-2002)
Keystone species have large impacts on community and ecosystem properties, and create important ecological interactions with other species. Prairie dogs (Cynomys spp.) and banner-tailed kangaroo rats (Dipodomys spectabilis) are considered keystone species of grassland ecosystems, and create a mosaic of unique habitats on the landscape. These habitats are known to attract a number of animal species, but little is known about how they affect lizard communities. Our research evaluated the keystone roles of prairie dogs and kangaroo rats on lizards at the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge in central New Mexico, USA. We evaluated the impacts of these rodents on lizard communities in areas where prairie dogs and kangaroo rats co-occurred compared to areas where each rodent species occurred alone. Our results demonstrate that prairie dogs and kangaroo rats have keystone-level impacts on these lizard communities. Their burrow systems provided important habitats for multiple lizard species, especially the lesser earless lizard (Holbrookia maculata). At the landscape-scale, the total number of lizards was two-times greater on the where both prairie dogs and banner-tailed kangaroo rats co-occurred than where only kangaroo rats occurred.

MSU Cheruvelil (MI): dissertation project, 2001-2002
This database is from a short-term research study designed to assess the relationships between lake chemistry, morphometry, and biota in 54 lakes in southern Michigan. Sampling was done in 2001 (36 lakes) and 2002 (18 lakes). Biota sampled (not in this dbase) include phytoplankton, zooplankton, and macrophytes. In addition, historical fish growth data was collected for these lakes (again, not included in this database). End of the first growth period in central Arizona-Phoenix 2001-2002 (Day of Year)
By studying vegetation leafing phenology and its coupling with climate along the urban-rural gradient in Phoenix metropolitan region, USA, we elucidated the degree of urbanization-induced transformations of phenology and primary productivity. In this study we used time-series of Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and spatially interpolated rainfall. Our analyses were stratified by major land covers and dominant soil texture. We also assessed time scales at which NDVI responds most strongly to climatic factors. No distinctive patterns in phenology were found along the urban-rural gradient; however some important generalities were confirmed. Agricultural and urban developments introduce growth multimodality, which is not attributable to desert but customarily found in riparian ecosystems of the area. Despite the existence of summer flush of growth in the desert its signal is not detected by de-noised satellite data. Urban and agricultural vegetation is characterized by fast growth and senescence rates. While agriculture has the shortest growth length, most urban vegetation stays photosynthetically active for longer periods. Growth in the desert is controlled by precipitation accumulated for 2-5 months. Spatial patterns of NDVI are predicted by precipitation grids. Positive relationship between these two variables changes seasonally reaching the maximum near the peak of annual growth. Spring and summer NDVI grids are in better agreement with longer term accumulated precipitation, but the early autumn growth is correlated more with immediate rainfall. Spatial and temporal correlations of desert NDVI with temperature are negative confirming the role of temperature in stimulating water loss from the soil. Tundra Plant Reflectance, CO2 Exchange, PAM Fluorometry, and Pigments, AK, 2001-2002
This dataset provides measurements at tundra plots collected near Utqiagvik and Atqasuk, AK, including visible-near infrared spectral reflectance, chamber gas exchange measurements of CO2, pulse amplitude modulated (PAM) fluorometry, chlorophyll pigment contents, along with surface temperature, permafrost active layer depth, and soil temperature at 5 cm, through the growing seasons of 2001 and 2002. At all plots, spectral reflectance was measured using a portable spectrometer configured with a straight fiber optic foreoptic, surface temperatures were measured using a handheld Everest Infrared Thermometer, and thaw depth (or active layer depth) was measured using a metal rod graduated in centimeter intervals. At small plots (~15 cm) at Utqiagvik (referred to as Patch plots) chambers were constructed that enclosed an individual patch to determine photosynthetic rate and estimate respiration rate (made by covering the chamber in a dark cloth). Efficiency using PAM fluorometer, ambient yield estimations, and rapid light curve measurements were taken. Chlorophyll concentration was measured with a portable spectrometer configured as a spectrophotometer. At larger plots (approximately 1 m2) which were part of the International Tundra EXperiment (ITEX plots) at Utqiagvik (referred to as Barrow) and Atqasuk, a sub-sample of five control and five warmed plots at each site were fitted with 0.45 m diameter polyvinyl chloride collars for chamber flux measurements. To determine the total fraction of absorbed photosynthetically active radiation (fAPAR), a series of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) measurements were made using a custom-made light bar consisting of a linear array of GaAsP sensors mounted within an aluminum U-bar under a white plastic diffuser. In addition, a visual estimate was made of the fraction of standing dead vegetation based on percent cover. The data are provided in comma-separated values (*.csv) format. In addition, photographs of plots and instruments are provided.

This data set reports observations of fires in the vicinity of Maraba, Para, Brazil, from November 3-5th, 2001, and in Mato Grosso, Brazil, between Cuiaba and Alta Floresta, for July 12-15th, 2002. These ground-based data were collected by visual inspection from roads primarily during daylight hours. Data include fire position and time, estimates of fire size, and type of vegetation burned. There is one comma-delimited ASCII file with this data set.
