Moths, Ants and Pitcher Plants in Bogs at Harvard Forest and Belchertown MA 2007-2013

Ecologists have long recognized that coexistence of interacting species depends on a diversity of separate, but linked habitats. Most models of species coexistence treat these habitat "patches" as unchanging elements of the landscape, but in reality, they are constantly changing in size and shape. The structure and dynamics of the food webs that inhabit them both control and depend on these changes. In this five-year (2006-2011) collaborative project, we are using a combination of extensive field surveys and intensive field experiments to understand how species interactions change the spatial distribution of dynamic habitat patches across the landscape, and to determine how food webs are structured within and among these patches. The experimental system for this five-year research project is the Sarracenia "microecosystem": the northern pitcher-plant Sarracenia purpurea; the unique food web of bacteria, protozoa, rotifers, mites, and fly larvae that live within its rainwater-filled leaves; three species of bog-inhabiting ants that are the primary prey for this carnivorous plant; and larvae of the pitcher-plant moth, Exyra fax, which cut and drain pitchers and remove food web habitat. Results from surveys of bogs in all six New England state and field experiments conducted at bogs at Harvard Forest and Belchertown, Massachusetts will be used to parameterize a simulation model to predict changes in spatial structure of ant, moth, and plant populations, and the structure and composition of the aquatic food web associated with the plant. FADN data on the support under the CAP delimited for LAU2 (NUTS2) regions in the EU Member States for the 2007-2013 programming period

<p>&nbsp;</p> <p>Ready to use FADN dataset on the support under the CAP in 2007-2013 delimited for LAU2 (NUTS2) regions in the EU Member States.</p> <p>Investigation of the interaction between Cohesion and Rural Policies requires analysing comparable data. However, the CAP data are usually collected at the national level. The FADN database is the only data source for analysing the impact of agricultural policy instruments on the economic situation of farms. However, the regional breakdown of FADN data in some countries does not correspond to the NUTS2 breakdown for which cohesion policy is defined.</p> <p>The provided FADN data delimitation uses a methodology that takes into account the range of impact and features specific to a given region. Because the research shows a very strong relationship between the amount of support under the CAP and the number and size of farms on a given area, this criterion was used to delimit FADN data for particular LAU2 (NUTS2) regions, while maintaining the allocation to individual measures.</p> <p>FADN data aggregated (averaged) to the level of FADN regions and economic size classes were used. Each FADN region has been assigned a corresponding NUTS2 region (or regions) according to the classification in 2010 in which the full census of the farm structure survey was carried out. The delimitation of FADN data to NUTS2 regions was based on weights constructed on the basis of Eurostat data on utilised agricultural area and number of holdings in 2010. In each economic size class, each FADN region consisted of the sum of the NUTS2 regions weighted by the utilised agricultural area. The result of each FADN variable was the sum of its values in each economic size class, weighted by the total number of holdings in each class.</p> <p>This database has served as a basis for two articles, one validating the assumptions of the NUTS2 (LAU) delimitation of the FADN regions and the other using the database to compare synergies and trade-offs between cohesion policy and the common agricultural policy.</p>

Mt. Bigelow Precipitation Measured at Schist Rain Gauge 2007-2013

Patterns of biodiversity, such as the increase toward the tropics and the peaked curve during ecological succession, are fundamental phenomena for ecology. Such patterns have multiple, interacting causes, but temperature emerges as a dominant factor across organisms from microbes to trees and mammals, and across terrestrial, marine, and freshwater environments. However, there is little consensus on the underlying mechanisms, even as global temperatures increase and the need to predict their effects becomes more pressing. The purpose of this project is to generate and test theory for how temperature impacts biodiversity through its effect on biochemical processes and metabolic rate. A combination of standardized surveys in the field and controlled experiments in the field and laboratory measure diversity of three taxa -- trees, invertebrates, and microbes -- and key biogeochemical processes of decomposition in seven forests distributed along a geographic gradient of increasing temperature from cold temperate to warm tropical. This daily precipitation data from Mt. Bigelow research site, 2007-2013, recorded at the Schist rain gauge, was retrieved from the website at http://criticalzone.org/catalina-jemez/data/dataset/2543/ as part of a macrosystems biodiversity and latitude project supported by the National Science Foundation under Cooperative Agreement DEB#1065836.
