Bayesian Analysis of Tree Distributions Across Space and Time in Eastern North America 2010-2011
The distributions of many organisms are spatially autocorrelated, but it is unclear whether including spatial terms in species distribution models (SDMs) improves projections of future species distributions. We provide the first comparative test of a purely spatial SDM, a purely non-spatial SDM, and an SDM that combines spatial and environmental information. Spatial SDMs provided better fits to the calibration data, more accurate predictions of a hold-out validation data set of modern trees, and lower false positive rates at all time periods than non-spatial SDMs. Hindcasted projection of spatial SDMs had higher variance than those of non-spatial SDMs. Overall predictive performance of non-spatial and spatial SDMs varied temporally and as a function of niche overlap. Ecological modelers should include spatial terms in SDMs used for projecting future distributions of species.
Temperature Sensitivity of Microbial Activity in Three Forest Soils at Harvard Forest 2010-2011
We evaluated possible seasonal variation in the temperature sensitivity of microbially mediated soil fluxes related to decomposition (net N mineralization, net nitrification, proteolysis, the maximum velocity (Vmax) of proteolysis, microbial respiration, and the Vmax of four soil exo-enzymes) across forests dominated by eastern hemlock (Tsuga canadensis), white ash (Fraxinus americana), and red oak (Quercus rubra) in Harvard Forest. We asked two simple questions: (1) do temperature sensitivities vary across forest types or different steps of the decomposition process, and (2) do temperature sensitivities display plasticity on a seasonal time frame?We observed substantial variation in temperature sensitivities (Q10 and R10 values) across the different fluxes and forest types. The ash soils exhibited the strongest temperature sensitivities and the mineral-N fluxes exhibited higher temperature sensitivities relative to the proteolytic fluxes or microbial respiration. The Vmax of soil exo-enzymes varied considerably in an interactive manner across forests and time, and the response of some enzymes was consistent with the thermal plasticity. The enzymatic kinetic properties Vmax and Km (half-saturation constant) were strongly correlated with slopes that differed across enzymes, reflecting an enzyme-specific tradeoff between maximum catalytic rate and substrate-binding efficiency. Generally, Q10 values were largely constant, but R10 values varied in a manner consistent with distinct seasonal plasticity. There was a consistent seasonal shift in R10 values coincident with snowmelt, suggesting that the time following snowmelt is a particularly interesting and dynamic period of microbial activity in these temperate forests.
Year-round metabolism data from Lakes Simcoe (Ontario, 2010-2011), Diefenbaker, Blackstrap, and Broderick (Saskatchewan, 2013-2014), Canada.
This year-round limnology dataset is from four dimictic Canadian water bodies: three mesotrophic reservoirs in southern Saskatchewan (SK; Blackstrap, Broderick, Diefenbaker) and one oligo-mesotrophic large lake in southern Ontario (Lake Simcoe). Physical, chemical, and biological parameters were measured during the open-water and ice-covered seasons in 2010–2011 (Lake Simcoe) and the SK reservoirs in 2013–2014. Two stations were sampled on Blackstrap reservoir, one on Broderick reservoir, three on Diefenbaker reservoir, and seventeen on Lake Simcoe. Sampling was conducted from a boat during the open-water season and during winter, we accessed the same stations by snowmobile and sampled through holes in the ice. Epilimnetic or surface water was collected for parameters listed below, and δ18O-O2 (oxygen) stable isotope samples were collected from one to 4 depths per station, depending on water column depth and lake thermal structure that day. Parameters reported included photosynthetically active radiation, vertical attenuation coefficient, mean daily mixed layer irradiance, total phosphorus, total dissolved phosphorus, dissolved reactive phosphorus, total dissolved nitrogen, particulate nitrogen, ammonium, nitrate, chlorophyll a, particulate organic carbon, and phytoplankton biovolumes. Photosynthesis irradiance (P-E) parameters were measured including the light saturation parameter, maximum relative electron transport rate through PSII, and the light limited slope of the P-E curve. We also measured areal net productivity, areal gross productivity, and areal respiration via three different methods including fluorometry via a Water-PAM fluorometer, O2 concentrations and δ18O-O2 values, and light-dark bottle experiments measuring changes in O2 concentrations.
KKE02 The Konza-Kruger Experiment: Net primary production data (2010-2011)
The distribution, structure and function of mesic savanna grasslands are strongly driven by fire regimes, grazing by large herbivores, and their interactions. This research addresses a general question about our understanding of savanna grasslands globally: Is our knowledge of fire and grazing sufficiently general to enable us to make accurate predictions of how these ecosystems will respond to changes in these drivers over time? Some evidence suggests that fire and grazing influence savanna grassland structure and function differently in South Africa (SA) compared to North America (NA). These differences have been attributed to the contingent factors of greater biome age, longer evolutionary history with fire and grazing, reduced soil fertility, and greater diversity of plants and large herbivores in SA. An alternative hypothesis is that differences in methods and approaches used to study these systems have led to differing perspectives on the role of these drivers. If the impacts of shared ecosystem drivers truly differ between NA and SA, this calls into question the generality of our understanding of these ecosystems and our ability to forecast how changes in key drivers will affect savanna grasslands globally. Since 2006, an explicitly comparative research program has been conducted to determine the degree of convergence in ecosystem (productivity, N and C cycling) and plant community (composition, diversity, dynamics) responses to fire and grazing in SA and NA. Thus far, initial support has been found for convergence at the ecosystem level and divergence at the community level in response to alterations in both fire regimes and grazing. However, there have also been two unexpected findings (1) the ways in which fire and grazing interact differed between NA and SA, and (2) the rate of change in communities when grazers were removed was much greater in NA than in SA. Stable isotope content (carbon, nitrogen) for epibenthic suspension feeders and Macrocyctis pyrifera at in the Santa Barbara Channel, 2010-2011
This dataset includes measurments of stable carbon, nitrogen isotopes in tissues of eight epibenthic suspension feeders and Macrocystis pyrifera (giant kelp) at three reefs in the Santa Barbara Channel during 2010 and 2011, as part of a study to (a) determine the contributions of phytoplankton and giant kelp detritus to the pool of suspended reef particulate organic matter (POM), and usage by benthic susupension feeders and (b) whether POM composition varies with distance from kelp forests. Species sampled include Chaceia ovoidea (bivalve), Aglaophenia spp (ostrich plume hydrozoan), Cucumaria piperata (echinoderm), Muricea californica (cnidarian), Phragmatopoma californica (tube worm), Parapholas californica (bivalve), Pachythyone rubra (echinoderm), and Styela montereyensis (tunicate). Samples were collected at three core SBC LTER research reefs: Arroyo Quemado, Arroyo Burro, and Mohawk. Potentially important food sources to benthic suspension-feeders on shallow subtidal reefs include phytoplankton-dominated seston, kelp-derived detritus, and for locations adjacent to sources of freshwater runoff, terrestrially-derived material. Our data will be input to mixing models to estimate the contribution of each source to the reef food web.
Throughfall and Isotopic Ratios on WS1 at the Andrews Experimental Forest, 2010-2011
The data in this set describes the throughfall collection on WS1 during 2010 and 2011, as well as the isotopic data assessed from these samples. In the Fall of 2010 there were eleven collection periods and in the Spring of 2011 there were eight collection periods. Data is no longer being collected. Throughfall and rainfall were measured at point locations, measured for the quantity and isotopic composition (Oxygen-16/18 and Hydrogen/Deuterium). Stemflow was also collected off of two PSME trees, one on the north-facing and one on the south-facing slope. These are the "plots" for this study, although they have no defined radius. During the Fall 2010 collection period, thirteen collectors were used, near the stream channel, along the trail in WS1. During the Spring 2011, there were eighteen collectors at each of two plots. Rainfall was also measured in an opening at the WS1 landing for comparison.

McMurdo Dry Valleys Garwood Valley Meteorological Station Measurements, 2010-2011
As part of the Long Term Ecological Research in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica, meteorological data was collected from various locations throughout Beacon, Taylor, Wright and Victoria Valleys. These files contain data for the Garwood Valley meteorology station. This station reported data for about a year, during 2011. On January 11, 2012 the station was disconnected and relocated to the Miers Valley. Met data for Garwood can be obtained visiting the Garwood Ice Cliff Met Station.

This dataset contains images used to observe double-crested cormorant and great egret nests on Chimney Pole Marsh, VA, a low-lying barrier marsh on the Atlantic coast of the Delmarva Peninsula. The camera was in operation June 15, 2010 to July 7, 2010, Aug, 3, 4 and 31, 2010, and May 10 through Aug. 11, 2011. Images were captured roughly once every 10 seconds during the day, resulting in a total of 287,564 images.
