Relative predation rates on juvenile Chinook Salmon in the lower Stanislaus River, California, 2012-2024 by habitat suitability informed by juvenile Chinook Salmon and black bass observations in the lower Stanislaus and Merced rivers, California, 2012-2017

Overview The purpose of this work was to estimate relative predation on juvenile Chinook Salmon rearing in tributaries of the San Joaquin River, California in relation to meso- and microhabitat factors. Predation rates were estimated using predation bioassays. Ranges of depth and velocity targeted by the bioassays were informed by habitat suitability indices developed prior to field efforts. Juvenile Chinook and Bass Habitat Suitability Indices The purpose of this dataset is to develop habitat suitability indices for juvenile Chinook Salmon (<120mm) on the lower Stanislaus River and nonnative black bass ( Micropterus spp.). on the lower Merced River, both tributaries of the San Joaquin. This data was used to identify target ranges of depth and velocity during predation fieldwork. Occupancy data was collected via snorkel surveys on the lower Stanislaus River in 2018 and 2019 and on the Merced River in 2012 and 2014-2017. Predation Tethering Bioassay Study The purpose of this field study was to estimate relative rates of predation of juvenile Chinook Salmon. Predation rates were estimated using assays of tethered hatchery Chinook Salmon deployed across a range of mesohabitats on the lower Stanislaus River. Habitat suitability was expected to vary across mesohabitats and across depths and velocities sampled within habitats. Cameras were deployed with tethers to identify predators for a subset of predation events happening within the first 1-2 hours of deployment. Assays were deployed monthly March-May in 2022 and 2024. A supplemental set of assays were deployed in May 2023 under wet water year conditions that varied strongly from conditions sampled in 2022 and 2024.

Metaproteomic Analysis of Sarracenia Purpurea Pitcher Fluid at Harvard Forest 2012-2017

Aquatic ecosystem enrichment can lead to distinct and irreversible changes to undesirable states. Understanding changes in active microbial community function and composition following organic-matter loading in enriched ecosystems can help identify biomarkers of such state changes. In a field experiment, we enriched replicate aquatic ecosystems in the pitchers of the northern pitcher plant, Sarracenia purpurea. Shotgun metaproteomics using a custom metagenomic database identified proteins, molecular pathways, and contributing microbial taxa that differentiated control ecosystems from those that were enriched. The number of microbial taxa contributing to protein expression was comparable between treatments; however, taxonomic evenness was higher in controls. Functionally active bacterial composition differed significantly among treatments and was more divergent in control pitchers than enriched pitchers. Aerobic and facultative anaerobic bacteria contributed most to identified proteins in control and enriched ecosystems, respectively. The molecular pathways and contributing taxa in enriched pitcher ecosystems were similar to those found in larger enriched aquatic ecosystems and are consistent with microbial processes occurring at the base of detrital food webs. Detectable differences between protein profiles of enriched and control ecosystems suggest that a time series of environmental proteomics data may identify protein biomarkers of impending state changes to enriched states.

A scrubbed subset of near-surface, soil, and air temperature data acquired across multiple locations on the San Joaquin Experimental Range, California, 2012-2017

These temperature records were collected as part of a larger study relating microclimates to tree seedling survival in southern California mountains. These temperature records are for studies at the San Joaquin Experimental Range (Lat 37.083, Long -119.716, elevation 210-520 m, www.fs.fed.us/psw/ef/san_joaquin/). Temperature sensors were located at 23 sites across the landscape. Sites were selected to sample topographic variation in surface and air temperatures within a narrow range of elevations on northeast to southwest-facing slopes, ridges, and valleys. To characterize surface temperature variation within a site, 21 sensors were arranged in an identical pattern around and in six, 5x5 m experimental gardens. An additional 18 sensors were placed along three transects over the landscape running E-W. They were placed strategically to sample topographic inflection points (hill tops and valley bottoms) as well as north and south facing slopes. Temperatures were recorded on a 10 or 20-minute interval, depending on the sensor, using HOBO (Onset, www.onsetcomp.com) devices.

Kuparuk River Whole Stream Metabolism Arctic LTER, Toolik Field Station Alaska 2012-2017

The Kuparuk River has been the central research location on the impact of added phosphorus to arctic streams. Additions of phosphorus occred since 1983. Today, 4 specific reaches show certain characteristics based on the years that they recieved fertilization. Whole Stream Metabolism is a way to quantify primary production of this stream system. Calculations were done using dissolved oxygen, discharge, stage, light and temperature measured by sondes and other equipment strategically deployed in the field at locations to quantify each of the unique stream reaches.

ACS_Bayelva_class: 302 high-resolution snow cover maps covering the 2012-2017 snowmelt seasons in the Bayelva catchment (Svalbard, Norway)

<p>The ACS_Bayelva_class dataset contains 302 high-resolution binary snow cover images that were obtained by classifying orthrorectified photographs of a 1.77 km^2 area of interest in the Bayelva catchment. This latest version (2.0) of the dataset includes the orthorectified photographs that were used to classify the binary snow cover images. The catchment is close to Ny-&Aring;lesund, the northernmost permanent civilian settlement in the world and a major hub for polar research, in the Norwegian high-Arctic Svalbard archipelago. The imagery has a (roughly) daily temporal resolution and a ground sampling distance (pixel spacing) of 0.5 m. The dataset spans 6 snowmelt seasons, covering the months May-August for the period 2012-2017. The orthophotos were obtained by processing oblique time-lapse photographs taken by a terrestrial automatic camera system (ACS) mounted at 562 m a.s.l. near the summit of Scheteligfjellet (719 m a.s.l.) a few kilometers west of Ny-&Aring;lesund. The orthophotos were manually classified into binary snow cover images (0=no snow, 1=snow) by iteratively selecting a (visually) optimal threshold on the intensity in the blue-band for each image. More details are provided in the study of Aalstad et al. (2020) [a copy is available in this repository] where this dataset was created. The ACS was maintained by scientists from the group of Sebastian Westermann at the Section for Physical Geography and Hydrology in the Department of Geosciences at the University of Oslo, Oslo, Norway.&nbsp;</p>

Relative percent cover of plant species was measured in ARC-LTER 1989 moist acidic tundra experimental plots. Treatments include Control (CT), Nitrogen Phosphorus (NP), Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), and Greenhouse Control (GHCT). In 1996 on unassigned plots, an experiment that manipulate herbivory presence and nutrients was started. Treatments include Control Unfenced (NFCT), Nitrogen Phosphorus Unfenced (NFNP), and Small Fenced Control (CTSF). Not all treatments were measured each year.

Calibrated pH (Total scale, SeaFET sensor) an disoolved oxygen (miniDOT)data were collected from Arroyo Quemado Reef in the Santa Barbara Channel (site ID: ARQ). pH data are accompanied by in situ temperature and associated carbonate chemistry parameters. The SeaFET instrument is located about 4 meters from the surface, with other moored instruments. Associated carbonate chemistry parameters were calculated with the CO2calc programs from USGS, and include: partial pressure and fugosity of CO2, concentrations of bicarbonate, carbonate and hyrdroxide ion, Omega (saturation state) of calcite and aragonite. Dissolved oxygen sensors (miniDOT, PME) were added in 2014, and are mounted near the ocean surface and near the seafloor, and also report temperature. All data have been interpolated to a 20 minute time interval for compatibility with other SBC LTER moored instrument data. Eight Mile Lake Research Watershed, Carbon in Permafrost Experimental Heating Research (CiPEHR): snow depth sensor data, 2012-2017

The Carbon in Permafrost Experimental Heating Research (CiPEHR) project addresses the following questions: 1) Does ecosystem warming cause a net release of C from the ecosystem to the atmosphere?, 2) Does the decomposition of old C, that comprises the bulk of the soil C pool, influence ecosystem C loss?, and 3) How do winter and summer warming alone, and in combination, affect ecosystem C exchange? We are answering these questions using a combination of field and laboratory experiments to measure ecosystem carbon balance and radiocarbon isotope ratios at a warming experiment located in an upland tundra field site near Healy, Alaska in the foothills of the Alaska Range. This data set contains three-hourly measurements of snow depth collected with acoustic sensors for winter warming and control treatment plots.

Eight Mile Lake Research Watershed, Thaw Gradient: Half-hourly snow depth data, 2012-2017

In this larger study, we are asking the question: Is old carbon that comprises the bulk of the soil organic matter pool released in response to thawing of permafrost? We are answering this question by using a combination of field and laboratory experiments to measure radiocarbon isotope ratios in soil organic matter, soil respiration, and dissolved organic carbon, in tundra ecosystems. The objective of these proposed measurements is to develop a mechanistic understanding of the SOM sources contributing to C losses following permafrost thawing. We are making these measurements at an established tundra field site near Healy, Alaska in the foothills of the Alaska Range. Field measurements center on a natural experiment where permafrost has been observed to warm and thaw over the past several decades. This area represents a gradient of sites each with a different degree of change due to permafrost thawing. As such, this area is unique for addressing questions at the time and spatial scales relevant for change in arctic ecosystems. This data set provides half-hourly measurements of snow depth collected with an acoustic sensor.

This drying and warming experiment addresses the following questions: 1) Does ecosystem drying, warming and permafrost thaw cause a net release or uptake of C from the ecosystem to the atmosphere?, 2) Does the decomposition of old C that comprises the bulk of the soil C pool influence ecosystem C loss? 3) How do drying and warmign affect plant communities and ecosystem properties? We are answering these questions using a combined warming and drying experiment (DryPEHR), which is situated with the Carbon in Permafrost Experimental Heating Research (CiPEHR) project and located in an upland tundra field site near Healy, Alaska in the foothills of the Alaska Range. Warming treatment here refers to growing season air temperature warming (~1C) using open top chambers (OTC) combined with soil 'warming' using snow fences during the snow covered months. Drying is achieve using an automated pumping system that lowers the water table in the dry plots. Soil warming began in 2008; OTCs and drying in 2011. Date snow-free is recorded every spring; when each individual plot becomes completely snow-free.

Anthropogenic Carbon Emission System, 2012-2017, Version 2

This dataset provides estimates of hourly carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from the combustion of fossil fuels at 1-km resolution for the coterminous United States (CONUS) covering the years 2012 through 2017. Emissions from the ACES model are reported for ten distinct emissions source sectors: Airports and Aircraft, Commercial Buildings, Electric Power Generation facilities, Industrial point and non-point sources, Commercial Marine Vessels, Nonroad vehicles and equipment, Oil and Gas wells and facilities, Onroad vehicles, Railway engines and yards, and Residential buildings. All emissions are reported hourly on a 1-km x 1-km spatial grid. The data are provided in NetCDF version 4 format.
