Arts and humanities in the LTER Network: understanding extent, values, and challenges by assessing the relevance of empathy in the LTER Network, 2013-2014
The Long-term Ecological Research (LTER) Network is a collection of 25 National Science Foundation-funded sites committed to long-term, place-based investigation of the natural world. While activities primarily focus on ecological research, arts and humanities inquiry emerged in 2002 and since then a substantial body of creative work has been produced at LTER-affiliated sites. These art-humanities-science collaborations parallel a wider trend in universities and nonprofits. However, there is little empirical work on the value and effectiveness of this work. After launching a survey in 2013 to assess the values and challenges associated with arts and humanities in the LTER Network, which identified empathy as a meaningful potential outcome of this creative work, we conducted a follow-up analysis to understand: the relevance of empathy in the LTER Network; the role of empathy in bridging arts, humanities, and science collaborations; and the capacity of empathy to connect wider audiences both to LTER science and to the natural world. Our research included phone interviews with representatives from 15 LTER sites and an audience perception survey at an LTER-hosted art show. We found that arts-humanities-science collaborations have great potential to catalyze relationships between scholars, the public, and the natural world; cultivate inspiration and empathy for the natural world; and spark awareness shifts that can enable pro-environmental behavior. Our research demonstrates the potential for art-humanities-science collaborations to facilitate conservation attitudes and action in the Network and beyond.
Deep Reference Mining from Scholarly Literature in the Arts and Humanities - Pre-trained word embeddings
<p>Pre-trained word vectors of dimensionality 100 and 300 for the publication: Deep Reference Mining from Scholarly Literature in the Arts and Humanities, submitted to Frontiers in Digital Humanities.</p> <p>The corpus of scholarly publications from which these vectors were trained is under copyright, therefore we publish these vectors for reproducibility. Please refer to the publication's repository for further details: <a href="https://github.com/dhlab-epfl/LinkedBooksDeepReferenceParsing">https://github.com/dhlab-epfl/LinkedBooksDeepReferenceParsing</a>.</p> <p>These vectors were trained using Gensim 3.1.0. The corpus was preprocessed as follows:</p> <ol> <li>word tokenization with NLTK word_punct tokenizer.</li> <li>digits were converted into the $NUM$ token</li> <li>words less frequent than 5 times, for every document, were converted to the $UNK$ token</li> <li>vectors were trained using the function: Word2Vec(window=5, min_count=5, sg=1)</li> </ol>
Poses of People in Art: A Data Set for Human Pose Estimation in Digital Art History
<p>Throughout the history of art, the pose—as the holistic abstraction of the human body's expression—has proven to be a constant in numerous studies. However, due to the enormous amount of data that so far had to be processed by hand, its crucial role to the formulaic recapitulation of art-historical motifs since antiquity could only be highlighted selectively. This is true even for the now automated estimation of human poses, as domain-specific, sufficiently large data sets required for training computational models are either not publicly available or not indexed at a fine enough granularity. With the <em>Poses of People in Art</em> data set, we introduce the first openly licensed data set for estimating human poses in art and validating human pose estimators. It consists of 2,454 images from 22 art-historical depiction styles, including those that have increasingly turned away from lifelike representations of the body since the 19<sup>th</sup> century. A total of 10,749 human figures are precisely enclosed by rectangular bounding boxes, with a maximum of four per image labeled by up to 17 keypoints; among these are mainly joints such as elbows and knees. For machine learning purposes, the data set is divided into three subsets—training, validation, and testing—, that follow the established JSON-based Microsoft COCO format, respectively. Each image annotation, in addition to mandatory fields, provides metadata from the art-historical online encyclopedia WikiArt.</p>
Digital Humanities Retrieval Evaluation Dataset for Art, Architecture and Life Sciences (DHREAAL)
<p>This dataset, titled "Digital Humanities Retrieval Evaluation Dataset for Art, Architecture, and Life Sciences," emphasizes semantic retrieval, including ground truth data for both content-based and instance-based image retrieval. Utilized to compare various promising approaches and refine the evaluation method, this dataset serves as a precursor to a more extensive dataset. Additional details can be found in the dataset's related publication.</p> <p>Currently, the dataset is still under development. In its next iteration, the dataset will include options for retrieving image syntax and temporal aspects, in addition to the semantics.</p>
Emerging Technologies in Arts and Humanities Education: A Systematic Review
<p>This research aims to identify and analyze emerging technologies applied in the field of Arts and Humanities. Through a systematic literature review based on the PRISMA protocol, 158 studies were analyzed using search strings in 2 scientific databases, contributing to addressing the research questions posed. The results indicate that, in arts and humanities, emerging technologies such as virtual reality, the Internet of Things, and mobile learning are transforming creativity, teaching, and management. Identified benefits include interactive, collaborative, and innovative learning, as well as increased accessibility to education. However, challenges such as lack of digital skills among teachers, deficiencies in infrastructure, and resistance to change highlight the need for training programs and overcoming obstacles for effective implementation of these technologies in arts and humanities education. The study presents key tools of emerging technologies that simplify the search, organization, and dissemination of information, as well as enabling the creation of multi-media teaching materials. The relevance of personalized teaching to suit different disciplines is emphasized, highlighting the need to strategically integrate emerging technologies into the educa-tional process.</p>

<p>This repository contains the datasets and visualizations generated in our work: <strong>"Retractions in Arts and Humanities: an analysis of the retraction notices"</strong>.</p> <p><strong>Note:</strong> the data are all contained inside the <strong><em>data.zip</em> </strong>file. You need to unzip the container to get access to all the files and directories listed below.</p> <p><strong>Metadata</strong></p> <p>The directory <em><strong>metadata/ </strong></em>contains a CSV with the citation count of all the retracted papers we have considered. Metadata retrieved from Retraction Watch cannot be published in this repository due to copy rights issues. </p> <p><strong>Content analysis</strong></p> <p>We run a topic modeling analysis on the content of the retraction notices. The topic modeling analysis has been done using MITAO, a tool for mashing up automatic text analysis tools and creating a completely customizable visual workflow [1]. Data Science in Arts and Humanities. What is useful data?
<p>This recording took place during the DHCH2023 event in Rome on June 5-7 in 2023.</p> <p>This event focuses on data science in the arts and the humanities. Flagship projects about text recognition, accessibility and digital sustainability of cultural heritage will be presented, and state-of-the-art methods in regard to 3D digitization will be introduced. The inalienable benefits of this research are explored, and the potential of these interventions is examined. And what about common criticism? </p> <p>The DHCH initiative provides a network to discuss the rich aspects of Digital Humanities, open up the perspective to the wide horizon of digital practices and support digital humanities approaches in arts, humanities and cultural heritage. Supplemental data for: Ukrainian Arts and Humanities research in Scopus. A Bibliometric Analysis
<p>The dataset consists of papers published in the Arts and Humanities field from Ukrainian institutions between 2012 and 2021. The data was obtained from Scopus using the search query "AFFILCOUNTRY (Ukraine) AND SUBJAREA (ARTS) AND PUBYEAR < 2022 AND PUBYEAR > 2011". All types of documents, except for Erratum, were included in the dataset. In addition to the raw data imported from Scopus, SciVal tools were utilized to analyze the Arts and Humanities subcategories and calculate various bibliometric characteristics. It is important to note that the dataset only includes papers published by Ukrainian institutions in the Arts and Humanities field and does not necessarily represent the entirety of Ukraine research output in these areas. Furthermore, the dataset may be subject to limitations and biases inherent to the Scopus database and the specific search criteria used.</p>
