Data used in the manuscript - A Hierarchical Approach for Evaluating Athlete Performance with an Application in Elite Basketball

<p>The database&nbsp;contains several datasets and files with NBA statistical data spanning four seasons (2015-2016 to 2018-2019). These datasets were procured from the Basketball Reference database (https://www.basketball-reference.com/), a publicly accessible source of NBA data.&nbsp;</p> <p>The main file, `dat.cleaned.csv`, includes the Win/Loss records for all thirty NBA teams, along with box scores and advanced statistics. The data captured over the four seasons correspond to about 4,920 regular-season games. A distinguishing feature of this dataset is the repeated measurements per player within a team across the seasons. However, it&#39;s important to note that these repeated measurements are not independent, necessitating the use of hierarchical modelling to properly handle the data.</p> <p>Two sets of additional text files (`per_2017.txt`, `per_2018.txt`, `rpm_2017.txt`, `rpm_2018.txt`) provide specific metrics for player performance. The &#39;PER&#39; files contain the Athlete Efficiency Rating (PER) for the years 2017 and 2018. The &#39;RPM&#39; files contain the ESPN-developed score called Real Plus-Minus (RPM) for the same years.</p> <p>However, potential biases or limitations within the datasets should be acknowledged. For instance, the Basketball Reference website might not include data from some matches or may exclude certain variables, potentially affecting the quality and accuracy of the dataset.&nbsp;</p>

The Relationship between Vitamin D Status, Intake and Exercise Performance in UK University-level Athletes and Healthy Inactive Controls

<p>The potential ergogenic effects of vitamin D (vitD) in high performing athletes has received considerable attention in the literature and media. However, little is known about non-supplemented university athletes and students residing at a higher latitude. This study aimed to investigate the effects of vitD (biochemical status and dietary intake) on exercise performance in UK university athletes and sedentary students. Physically healthy male and female university students and athletes from the University of Surrey (51.2&ordm;N) were recruited between January and March (2018) to take part in this study. A total of 50 participants (n= 24 males, n= 26 females) were included, 34 (n=18 male, n=16 female) were university athletes competing in a variety of sports.&nbsp;</p> <p>Fasted serum vitD status and sunlight exposure were assessed using LC-MS/MS and dosimetry, respectively. Body composition was measured through the use of a dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) whole body scan (Hologic QDR, Hologic inc. USA). Muscular strength of the upper and lower body was assessed using dominant arm handgrip and knee extensor dynamometry (KE) of the non-dominant leg.&nbsp; Countermovement jump (CMJ) and aerobic fitness were measured using an Optojump and VO<sub>2max</sub> test using a stationery cycle ergometer, respectively.</p>

Evaluating the Prevalence and Impact of Chronic Ankle Insta-bility in Collegiate Athletes across Various Sports: A Cross-Sectional Study.

<p>In the cross-sectional study "Evaluating the Prevalence and Impact of Chronic Ankle Instability in Collegiate Athletes across Various Sports," researchers sought to quantify how widespread chronic ankle instability (CAI) is among collegiate athletes and to determine its effects on athletic performance and training. The study involved 385 athletes from diverse sports, including basketball, soccer, track and field, swimming, and other sports, and revealed that CAI was present in nearly half of the participants. The investigation highlighted significant disparities in prevalence rates among different sports, with basketball and soccer athletes exhibiting higher rates of CAI. Furthermore, the study assessed the impact of CAI on several performance metrics such as training intensity, performance scores, and recovery times, finding that athletes with CAI generally showed lower performance levels and longer recovery times. Validity and reproducibility of a food frequency questionnaire to determine dietary intakes among Lebanese athletes

<p><a name="_Hlk166496350"></a><span><strong>Background</strong> </span><strong><span>and objective:</span></strong><span><strong><span> </span></strong></span><span><span>Nutrition is a basic need for athletes; thus, adequate dietary intake is crucial for maintaining overall health, facilitating training adaptations and boosting athletic performance. Accurate dietary assessment tools are required to minimize the challenges faced by athletes. This study verifies the validity and reproducibility of a 157 item semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) among Lebanese athletes. This is the only Arabic questionnaire in Lebanon that estimates food consumption for athletes which can also be used in Arabic speaking countries. There has been no previous validated food frequency questionnaire that estimated food consumption for athletes in Lebanon. </span></span><span><strong><span>Methods:</span></strong></span><span><strong><span> </span></strong></span><span><span>A total of 194 athletes were included in the study to assess the validity of the food frequency questionnaire against four days dietary recalls by comparing the total nutrient intake values from the food frequency questionnaire with the mean values of four 24-hour dietary recalls using Spearman correlation coefficient and Bland Altman plots. In order to measure the reproducibility, the intra class correlation coefficients were calculated by repeating the same food frequency questionnaire after one month. </span></span><span><strong><span>Results:</span></strong></span><span><strong><span> </span></strong></span><span><span>The intra-class correlation coefficient between the two-food frequency questionnaires ranged from average (0.739 for carbohydrates) to good (0.870 for energy (Kcal)), to excellent (0.919 for proteins) concerning macronutrients and ranged from average (0.688 for vitamin D), to excellent (0.952 for vitamin B12), indicating </span></span><span><span>an acceptable reproducibility. </span></span><span><span>Spearman&rsquo;s correlation coefficients of dietary intake estimate from the food frequency questionnaire and the four dietary recalls varied between 0.304 for sodium, 0.469 for magnesium to 0.953 for caloric intake (kcal). Bland-Altman plots illustrated a percentage of agreement ranging between 94.3% for fats to 96.4% for proteins. </span></span><span><strong><span>Conclusion:</span></strong></span><span><strong><span> </span></strong></span><span><span>This food frequency questionnaire has a reliable validity and reproducibility to evaluate dietary assessments and is an appropriate tool for future interventions to ensure the adoption of adequate eating strategies by athletes.</span></span></p>

Having an optimal race with hypnosis: Efficient mental training with a hypnosis audio-intervention in professional Downhill Mountainbike athletes

<p>We tested 19 professional downhill mountainbike athletes participating in two consecutive races of the IXS Downhill Cup. All athletes listened to a hypnosis audio-intervention at least one time after the first race. We instructed the athletes to use the personal post-hypnotic trigger to elicit an optimal mental state in the second race. At both races, we measured competitive anxiety, self-confidence, state resilience, and flow with questionnaires and assessed heart rate variability (HRV) as a physiological measure of resilience.</p> <p>HRV data was measuared using the Polar H10 chest strap and recorded via the Polar Sensor Logger Application. HRV was analysed with Kubios HRV Standard version 3.5.0 Analysis Software. Exploring Sleep Patterns and Influencing Factors in Elite Female Football Athletes

<p>This dataset contains a novel collection of data from 21 elite female footballers who were continuously monitored for 17 days. The dataset includes measures of actigraphy, well-being, caffeine consumption, screen time and daily hand strength tests. The main objective is to gain a deeper understanding of the interactions between lifestyle, sleep and athletic performance.</p> <p>Sleep is essential for physical and mental recovery, memory performance and brain development. Athletes' sleep quality can be significantly affected by various factors, such as rigorous training schedules, stress, light exposure and caffeine consumption. By closely examining these factors, this dataset supports the creation of personalised training models that take into account the individual sleep patterns and recovery needs of each athlete. Such personalised approaches aim to optimise training and recovery strategies to ultimately improve the overall performance and well-being of athletes.</p>

Supplementary material Next-generation sequencing reveals that miR-16-5p, miR-19a-3p, miR-451a and miR-25-3p cargo in plasma extracellular vesicles differentiates sedentary young males from athletes.

<p>A sedentary lifestyle is a leading risk factor for global mortality. No objective molecular biomarker of sedentarism is available. Extracellular vesicles miRNAs have been described to respond to exercise. Our aim was to identify the extracellular vesicle miRNA profile of chronically trained young male athletes, endurance and resistance, compared to their sedentary counterparts.&nbsp;A descriptive case-control design with 16 sedentary young men, 16 Olympic male endurance athletes and 16 Olympic male resistance athletes.&nbsp;Next Generation Sequencing and RT-qPCR, external and internal validation, were performed in order to analysed extracellular vesicle miRNA profiles.&nbsp;miR-16-5p, miR-19a-3p and miR-451a were significantly upregulated in SED compared to END and RES. Besides, miR-25-3p was specifically down-regulated in END compared to SED. Extracellular vesicle miR-16-5p, miR-19a-3p, miR-451a provide an objective signature of sedentarism irrespective of the type of exercise and miR-25-3p as a specific responder to endurance training. Therefore, this study provides for the first time an objective measure to categorise individuals as sedentary or trained in young male population and moreover, it highlights a common epigenetic modulation between models of training.</p>

Features of speed-strength training of young taekwondo athletes

<p><strong><em>Abstract.</em></strong> <strong><em>Sanсharova N</em></strong><strong><em>.</em></strong><strong><em>, Ogar G</em></strong><strong><em>.</em></strong><strong><em>, Сych D</em></strong><strong><em>. Features of speed-strength training of young taekwondo athletes. </em></strong><strong><em>Purpose: </em></strong><em>is to work out methodology of speed-power preparation for young taekwondo athletes 14 and experimentally to ground her efficiency. <strong>Material and methods:</strong> Twenty young taekwondo athletes, 14 years of age, participated in the experiment. They were divided into 2 groups: experimental, training sessions in which were conducted according to an experimental technique and a control one, the athletes of which were engaged in the usual technique common in most sections of taekwondo. Each group had 10 subjects. The effectiveness of the methodology was determined by the dynamics of the fitness indicators of young athletes, where the overall physical preparedness and special shock preparedness of the subjects were assessed. Research methods: analysis of scientific sources, pedagogical observations, pedagogical testing, video shooting, mathematical and statistical processing of research results.</em> <strong><em>Results.</em></strong><em> a study of the dynamics of the fitness of young taekwondo athletes of the experimental group, during the experiment, showed a significant improvement in the results in all the tests (p&lt;0</em><em>,</em><em>05-0</em><em>,</em><em>001). In young taekwondo athletes of the control group, during the experiment, significant changes occurred only in four tests out of nine (p&lt;0</em><em>,</em><em>05-0</em><em>,</em><em>01). Thus, the dynamics of positive changes in the preparedness of athletes of the control group is significantly inferior to positive changes in the experimental group.</em> <strong><em>Conclusions:</em></strong><em> The experimental methodology of speed-strength training of young taekwondo athletes with the use of a wide range of means was developed, the effectiveness of its influence on the special shock training of athletes is proved by the results of the study.</em> <em>Thus, it can be argued that the speed-strength orientation of the training process of young taekwondo athletes allows athletes to better realize their technical and tactical potential. Trainers, teachers, during the training sessions, should not be limited to competitive and special means, especially when working with young athletes.</em></p>

Antisaccadic Gain and Velocity Differences Between Athletes and Non-Athletes

<p>Accurate eye movements are imperative to successfully meet the physical demands of sport. Prior literature has proposed that athletes utilize saccades to make correct perceptual responses, a process modulated by saccadic gain (SG) and velocity (SV). SG and SV are powerful measures for understanding the premotor and central circuits of saccades, and represent speed-accuracy mechanisms underlying rapid eye movement control. The current study evaluated SG differences between interceptive (INT) and strategic (STR) Division I athletes, as well as non-athletes (NON) with an antisaccade task. Thirty-six participants (12 INT, 12 STR and 12 NON) performed two, 40-trial blocks of a 20&deg; antisaccade task, from which SG and SV were calculated. Two one-way ANOVAs were calculated to assess the differences in SG and SV between the 3 groups during an antisaccade task. There was a significant main effect of athlete type on SG (p&lt;0.05) and SV (p&lt;0.01). Post-hoc analyses revealed that STR had significantly lower SG and SV than INT and NON (<em>p</em>&lt;0.05). No significant differences were noted between INT and NON SG (p=0.863) and SV (<em>p</em>=0.35). This study provides novel observations in the saccadic behavior between athlete paradigms and NON. This research demonstrates that there are apparent antisaccadic gain and velocity differences between different sport paradigms.</p>

Developing Youth Track and Field Athletes - Diversification Dataset

<p><strong>The Prevalence of Within-Sport Specialization in Track and Field Athletics, and its Consequences for&nbsp;Participation and Retention&nbsp;</strong></p> <p><strong>Purpose: </strong>The aim of this study was to provide an in-depth analysis of the prevalence and consequences of within-sport specialization in track and field in the United Kingdom. <strong>Method: </strong>The competition histories of top 100 ranked athletes from four representative events (100m, 800m, long jump and shot put) were recorded from a publically-accessible database. Athletes were drawn from Under 20 (U20), U15 and U13 populations from the 2014/15 season, U15 populations from the 2009/10 season, and U13 populations from the 2007/08 season. Athletes&rsquo; specialization status was defined based upon the number of event groups (sprint, endurance, jump, throw) in which they had recorded at least one performance. Chi-squared tests were used to examine the relationship between level of specialization at U13 and U15 and both performance and retention at subsequent age grades. <strong>Results: </strong>Within-sport specialization was rare among U13 and U15 track and field athletes, with approximately 10% of top 100 ranked U13s and 25% of top 100 ranked U15s competing in a single event group only. However, less than 35% of participants competed in sprinting, endurance running, jumping and throwing events. There were no sex differences in the extent of specialization. Top ranked U20 female athletes were more likely to have diversified at U13 than their peers. There was no association between specialization at U13/U15 and subsequent retention. <strong>Conclusion: </strong>Administrators and coach educators should consider promoting a more nuanced message regarding participation in track and field, by incorporating advice on between-sport as well as within-sport specialization.</p>

<p>This record contains raw data related to the article &ldquo;Cardiac Biomarkers and Autoantibodies in Endurance Athletes: Potential Similarities with Arrhythmogenic Cardiomyopathy Pathogenic Mechanisms&quot;.&nbsp;</p> <p>The &quot;Extreme Exercise Hypothesis&quot; states that when individuals perform training beyond the ideal exercise dose, a decline in the beneficial effects of physical activity occurs. This is due to significant changes in myocardial structure and function, such as hemodynamic alterations, cardiac chamber enlargement and hypertrophy, myocardial inflammation, oxidative stress, fibrosis, and conduction changes. In addition, an increased amount of circulating biomarkers of exercise-induced damage has been reported. Although these changes are often reversible, long-lasting cardiac damage may develop after years of intense physical exercise. Since several features of the athlete&#39;s heart overlap with arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy (ACM), the syndrome of &quot;exercise-induced ACM&quot; has been postulated. Thus, the distinction between ACM and the athlete&#39;s heart may be challenging. Recently, an autoimmune mechanism has been discovered in ACM patients linked to their characteristic junctional impairment. Since cardiac junctions are similarly impaired by intense physical activity due to the strong myocardial stretching, we propose in the present work the novel hypothesis of an autoimmune response in endurance athletes. This investigation may deepen the knowledge about the pathological remodeling and relative activated mechanisms induced by intense endurance exercise, potentially improving the early recognition of whom is actually at risk.</p>

Japanese International Student-Athletes' Adjustment Experience at the National Collegiate Athletic Association

<p>This data is the interview guide that was conducted in this article. The purpose of this study is to clarify the challenges for ISAs from Japan in adjusting to the United States&rsquo; universities. Situating in the ISA adjustment model and using a unique case study design, 13 Japanese ISAs at the NCAA Division I universities were interviewed, and data were coded by a continuous comparative analysis method.&nbsp;</p> <p>The results revealed that Japanese ISAs who participated in this study faced academic, social, athletic, personal-emotional, and institutional adjustment challenges. Particularly, Japanese ISAs differed from ISAs from other countries in several points; cultural differences, differences in communication styles, and systemic differences in academia and athletics between Japan and the US.<br> All datasets underlying the results cannot be sufficiently de-identified by redaction for uploading to a general data repository due to the sample size and nature of the conversations. Thus, the datasets are not available to share for ethical and privacy considerations as well as the guarantee given to the interviewees to maintain the anonymity of the interview. Sleep Architecture in Response to a Late Evening Competition in Team-Sport Athletes

<p>Purpose: The aim of this study was to assess the effect of a late evening competition on sleep characteristics and perceived recovery in team-sport players using a validated self-applicable and portable polysomnographic device. Methods: Sixteen teamsport players (age: 25.4 [1.4] y; body mass index: 23.6 [0.5] kg/m2) completed the study. Objective and subjective sleep data were collected for 4 consecutive nights: 2 nights before (PRE2 and PRE1) and the 2 nights after an eveningmatch (POST1), performed between 6:00 PM and 9:00 PM. Total quality of recovery values were also collected in the morning. Results: A significantly delayed bedtime (P &lt; .0001; &eta;2p = .68, large) was observed in the first night after the competition (2 h 29 min [1 h 15 min]) compared both to PRE2 (+88 min; P &lt; .0001), PRE1 (+98 min; P &lt; .0001), and POST1 (+100 min; P &lt; .0001), and similar results were observed for wake-up time (P = .033; &eta;2p = .39, large): Players woke up significantly later in evening match (9 h 20 min [1 h 55 min]) compared with PRE2 (+85 min; P = .050) and POST1 (+85 min; P = .049). Conversely, total sleep time; sleep efficiency; sleep onset latency; wake after sleep onset; cortical arousals; N1, N2, N3, and REM (rapid eye movement) percentages; total quality of recovery values; and scores of subjective sleep quality did not vary among the 4 study nights. Conclusions: Team-sport players had delayed bedtime and wake up time following an evening competition; however, sleep quality, duration, and subjective scores of recovery were not affected by the evening match. The delayed wake-up time seems to protect athletes&rsquo; sleep efficiency/duration against the evening-match-induced delayed bedtime.</p>
