Reduced erosion augments soil carbon storage under cover crops

This dataset comprises field measurements of soil organic carbon erosion and soil organic carbon stock from 152 paired control and cover crop treatments, collected from 57 published studies worldwide. It also provides related information on the collected study sites, including climate (mean annual temperature and mean annual precipitation), geography (slope and altitude), soil properties (silt+clay and SOC concentration), and agricultural management (cover crop species, tillage intensity and experimental duration). Furthermore, it includes the estimated effect sizes of soil organic carbon erosion reduction induced by cover crops in agricultural lands at the global scale.

Clear Creek Gravel Augmentations, 1996-2021

Clear Creek Anadromous Fish Habitat Restoration and Management Project (aka “Gravel Augmentations”), 1996-2021 The purpose of the Clear Creek Gravel Augmentation Project (the Project) is to improve habitat conditions in Lower Clear Creek for anadromous salmonid species, including spring-run, fall-run, and late fall-run Chinook salmon, and Central Valley steelhead. This programmatic effort was formally titled Lower Clear Creek Anadromous Fish Habitat Restoration and Management Project (LCCAFHRMP), though “gravel augmentations” remains the most commonly use name for the project. The Project is implemented annually to improve fish habitat by placing gravel and other desirable materials into the stream channel with the intent of restoring and maintaining the balance of sediment in Clear Creek, providing desirable creek channel attributes like floodplain connectivity, channel migration, fish habitat formation (e.g. spawning habitat), and supporting riparian community development. The Project is proposed to meet the requirements of the CVPIA 3406 (b)(12) which has identified the lack of in-stream spawning gravel as a significant factor limiting anadromous fish reproduction in Clear Creek. The Clear Creek Gravel Augmentation Project consists of adding clean (washed), size-sorted natural river gravel directly (riffle supplementation) or indirectly (talus cone, lateral berm) into the Clear Creek channel, along with other desirable materials (i.e., large wood and boulders). The project is funded by the CVPIA. Each year, the Clear Creek Technical Team chooses the top priority gravel augmentation sites for implementations.

Baltimore Ecosystem Study: Increased diversity of the regional species pool via seeding augments establishment of native species in experimental vacant lot restorations

The harsh geophysical template characterized by the urban environment combined with people’s choices has led ecologists to invoke environmental filtering as the main ecological phenomena explaining urban biodiversity patterns. Yet, dispersal is often overlooked as a driving factor, especially on expanding vacant land. Does overcoming dispersal limitation by seeding native species in urban environments and increasing the functional or phylogenetic diversity of the seeding pool increase native plant species diversity and abundance in urban vacant land? We took an experimental approach to learn how different dimensions of plant biodiversity within an augmented regional species pool, via seed additions, can explain variation in community structure over a 3-year period. Vacant lots were cleared and manipulated with seeding treatments of high or low phylogenetic and functional diversities from a pool of 28 native species. Establishment success, total native cover and native species richness were followed and compared to cleared, unseeded control lots as well as un-manipulated lots. Seeding increased native plant abundance and richness over uncleared plots, as well as cleared and unseeded control plots. Phylogenetically diverse seed mixtures had greater establishment success than mixtures composed of closely related species. Diversifying seed mixtures increased the likelihood of including species that are better able to establish on vacant land. However, there were no differences in varying levels of either functional or phylogenetic diversity. Augmenting the regional species pool via diverse seed mixtures can enhance native plant cover and richness under the harsh environmental conditions conferred by land abandonment.
