Santa Barbara Channel Marine BON: Nearshore kelp forest integrated benthic cover, 1980-ongoing
The Santa Barbara Channel Marine Biodiversity Observation Network (SBCMBON) tracks long-term patterns in species abundance and diversity. This dataset contains cover of kelp forest sessile invertebrates, understory macroalgae, and substrate types by integrating data from four contributing projects working in the kelp forests of the Santa Barbara Channel, USA. Divers collect data on using either uniform point contact (UPC) or random point contact (RPC) methods. The four contributing projects are two research projects: The Santa Barbara Coastal LTER (SBC LTER) and the Partnership for Interdisciplinary Studies of Coastal Oceans (PISCO), the kelp forest monitoring program of the Santa Barbara Channel National Park, and the San Nicolas Island monitoring program supported by USGS. Together, these projects have recorded data for more than 200 species at approximately 100 sites on both the mainland coast and on the Santa Barbara Channel Islands. Sampling began in 1982 and is ongoing. Data were collected by human observation (divers using SCUBA) during regular surveys. Percent cover is recorded for taxa where individuals cannot be counted. Cover can be calculated from the data here as the fraction of total points at which the taxon was present x 100. With UPC and RPC methods, multiple species can be recorded at any given point. The total percent cover of all species combined using this method can exceed 100%; however, the percent cover of any single species cannot exceed 100%. UCSB SONGS Mitigation Monitoring: Reef Performance Standard - Benthic Algae and Macroinvertebrate Cover, Abundance, and Richness
These data describe annual estimates of the percent cover, abundance, and species richness (evaluated as species density) of benthic macroalgae and macroinvertebrates from replicate transects at three subtidal reefs. Data collection began in 2009 at an artificial reef (Wheeler North Reef in Orange County, CA) and two natural reference reefs (San Mateo Kelp in Orange County, CA and Barn Kelp in San Diego County, CA) to evaluate the ability of Wheeler North Reef to compensate for losses of kelp forest habitat and associated biota caused by the operation of the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS).

SBC LTER: Santa Cruz Island: Cover of Algae, Invertebrates and Benthic Substrate
These data describe the cover of benthic substrate as determined by a random point contact method. The presence of algae and invertebrate species as well as abiotic substrates are recorded at 80 randomly spaced points along 40 m x 2 m transects. Only one substrate type is recorded at a given point. Percent cover of a given substrate on a transect can be estimated from RPC observations as the fraction of total points at which that substrate was present x 100. These data are part of a long term investigation of temporal patterns in reef community composition. The sampling locations in this dataset include eleven sites along the north shore of Santa Cruz Island. Data collection began in 1982 and this dataset is updated annually.
MBON: Benthic percent cover in the Santa Barbara Channel
This study aims to quantify the percent cover of sessile species from shallow rocky reefs along the coast of Santa Barbara Channel, including the Channel Island National Park monitoring sites. BisQue (Bio-Imagery Semantic Query User Environment, a cloud-based analysis platform) was used to analyzed over 1500 images taken between 2013 and 2015 on the shallow reefs. This is the first phase of a bigger project that directs to improve the image analysis to complement or replace time-consuming in-situ surveys by divers. This data set contains percent cover and occurrence data of invertebrates, algae and fish from 22 subtidal rocky reef sites (Anacapa Landing, Arroyo Burro, Arroyo Quemado, Carpinteria, Cathedral Cove, Cuyler-Bat Rock, Diablo, Ellwood Mesa, Fry’s, Gull Island, Hazards, Isla Vista, Johnsons Lee-North, Mohawk, Naples, Pelican, Prisoners, Rhodes, Scorpion, Solimar, West-End and Cat Rock, Yellowbank). One survey image was collected at each site. Images were processed from 2015-2017 using BisQue with over 300 unique identifying tags. Data are organized in two tables (1) percent cover, (2) occurrence (present-absent).

These data describe annual estimates of the percent cover of benthic macroalgae, sessile macroinvertebrates, and hard and soft substrates at three subtidal reefs collected as part of the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS) Mitigation Monitoring Program. Data collection began in 2009 at an artificial reef (Wheeler North Reef in Orange County, CA) and two natural reference reefs (San Mateo Kelp in Orange County, CA and Barn Kelp in San Diego County, CA). In the summer of each year, divers identified and recorded species of sessile algae and macroinvertebrates, and substrate types under twenty uniformly placed points within five 1 m2 quadrats that were uniformly distributed along semi-permanent transects at each reef.
MCR LTER: Coral Reef: Benthic Community Dynamics: Island Scale Coral Cover Analysis
These data describe the results of outer reef surveys that are conducted on an irregular schedule to quantify coral reef community dynamics on a scale of kilometers. The first island-wide survey was completed in 2006, and the second in 2010; we anticipate conducting such surveys every 5-6 years or as needed to capture the large-scale effects of disturbance regimes. The island-wide sampling adds 3 new sites per shore (for a total of 5 sites/shore with the fixed LTER sites) in each year that the larger scale analyses are completed.
SBC LTER: Reef: Kelp Forest Community Dynamics: Kelp Forest Data to support "Estimating biomass of benthic kelp forest invertebrates from body size and percent cover"
These data describe quantitative relationships between wet mass and length or wet mass and percent cover, and conversion factors to transform wet mass into dry mass, shell-free and decalcified dry mass, and ash-free dry mass for 84 species of benthic macroinvertebrates common to giant kelp forests in southern California. Data are based on organisms collected from sites in the Santa Barbara Channel between April 2010 and May 2014. These measurements are intended to facilitate the conversion of invertebrate abundance into common metrics of biomass, for quantitative studies of community dynamics, trophic interactions, energy flow and biodiversity. Converting numerical abundance (i.e., organism density) to biomass requires information on the relationship between individual size and biomass. For colonial and small aggregating taxa that are numerous and indistinct, measures of abundance are usually proportional (e.g., percent cover). Hence, converstions are taxa-specific, based on either size or cover, and a variety of metrics of species biomass are included, e.g., wet mass, shell-free wet mass, ash-free dry mass. Historical coral reef benthic cover for the Western Indian Ocean (1970-2008)
<p>Benthic cover data (percent cover) for the Western Indian Ocean. Data have been extracted from published sources through a systematic literature review, and compiled with previously unpublished datasets. Data was collected prior to 2008 through quantitative coral reef surveys (e.g., Line or Point-Intercept-Transects, photo or visual quadrats) and visual estimates. Particular attention was given to compiling live hard coral cover and macro and turf algae cover data due to their importance as principal measures of coral reef health. Data are from 10 Western Indian Ocean countries and territories: Kenya, Seychelles, Tanzania, Mozambique, Comoros, Mayotte, Madagascar, Reunion, Mauritius and South Africa.</p> <p>Data were extracted from grey literature (technical reports, books, and book chapters), scientific journal papers (articles and reviews) and project reports. </p> <p>Data were generally reported as summarised mean cover values at a monitoring site level. Data aggregated at broader geographic scales was also included (e.g., “northern Kenya”), or other classes (e.g., “unspecified 9 sites (protected)”). </p> <p>Data found in more than one publication were identified and cross-referenced to the other sources. Locations were ordered hierarchically by Country, Sector, Site and Station. In some cases, the same site or station may have multiple entries for the same year because of surveys of different reef zones or depths, and this information is provided to enable a distinction to be made. The exact date or year of survey was not clear in a few publications, and this has been recorded in the <em>Year</em> column as either combined years, e.g. 1998/99, general time period, e.g. mid - 1990s, or if no information is available, as ‘n.d’.</p>

Portable Remote Imaging Spectrometer (PRISM) COral Reef Airborne Laboratory (CORAL) Regional Benthic Cover Data
Flight line benthic cover measurements from the Portable Remote Imaging Spectrometer (PRISM) instrument aboard the Tempus Applied Solutions Gulfstream-IV (G-IV) aircraft, taken as part of the NASA COral Reef Airborne Laboratory (CORAL) Earth Venture Suborbital-2 (EVS-2) mission designed to provide an extensive, uniform picture of coral reef composition. The CORAL mission surveyed parts of the reefs surrounding the Mariana Islands, Palau, portions of the Great Barrier Reef, the main Hawaiian Islands, and the Florida Keys.
