Ethical Knowledge: The Good Book Confronts A Changing World
<p>The ethical knowledge of how the Good Book confronts the changing world facilitates knowledge processes, supports purposive moral action, and possesses ethical dissent. Ethicality, fair behavior, and trust are the essence of the knowledge culture of an organization, the church inclusive. The success of ethical knowledge in a religious setting which has observed the ever-increasing confrontation of the changing world by the Holy Writ may to a large extent depend on knowledge management initiatives and its features, but its sustainability depends on following adequate ethical practices. The churches managed by leaders who value ethical principles and have ethical orientations create an opportunity for congregants and other stakeholders to contribute to knowledge creation and knowledge acquisition. An ecclesiastical ethical leadership also creates trust, fairness, and transparency which encourages knowledge sharing and transfer. The church’s top management led by an ethical leader plays a pivotal role in knowledge creation by encouraging all parties involved to contribute to knowledge creation. Consequently, this paper seeks to integrate ethical knowledge and the non-changeability of the Good Book in a world-changing on a fast lane through an assessment of teleological and deontological ethical views.</p>
Data from: Irreproducible text-book 'knowledge': the effects of color bands on zebra finch fitness
Many fields of science currently experience a heated debate about the extent of publication bias against null-findings. Here, we show a case where putatively well-established text-book knowledge cannot be confirmed. Across four decades, zebra finch (Taeniopygia guttata) studies have reported effects of bands of certain colors on male or female attractiveness and further on behavior, physiology, life-history and fitness. Only 8 out of 39 publications presented exclusively null-findings. Here, we analyze the results of eight experiments in which we quantified the fitness of 730 color-banded individuals from four captive populations (two domesticated and two recently wild-derived). This sample size exceeds the combined sample size of all 23 publications that clearly support the "color-band effect" hypothesis. In our populations, band color explained no variance in fitness and there were no context- or population-specific band color effects. Analysis of unpublished data from three other laboratories strengthens our null finding. Finally, a meta-analysis of previously published results is indicative of selective reporting and suggests that the effect size approaches zero when sample size is large. We argue that our field would benefit from more effective means to counter confirmation bias and publication bias.
The Brill Knowledge Graph: A Database of Bibliographic References and Index Terms extracted from Books in Humanities and Social Sciences
<p>We present a complete dataset of linked bibliography and index data, partially disambiguated and augmented with references to external resources, extracted from the Brill’s archive in the field of Classics. Processed book identifiers are listed in a separate text file. Text fragments extracted from different books via this process are then parsed and compared using a string-based similarity metric to form clusters of bibliographic references to the same published work or (variants of) the same subjects discussed in these books.
