Anyskop Blowout Prehistoric Dataset, Western Cape, South Africa
<p>These Stone Age archaeological datasets were collected in 2001 and 2002 by a team from the Department of Early Prehistory and Quaternary Ecology of the University of Tübingen (Germany) headed by Nicholas J. Conard. Many South African researchers collaborated on this project, with Pippa Haarhoff, John Compton, Dave Roberts, and Stephan Woodborne deserving special mention.</p> <p>The field work took place at the Anyskop Blowout (ANY1) located within the West Coast Fossil Park near Langebaanweg, Western Cape, South Africa. The field work was conducted with the help of students from the universities of Tübingen and Cape Town. The datasets are predominantly in English (with some German as well) and include field data in the MAIN table. Further analytical data for many classes of artifacts include: LITHICS, FAUNA, POTTERY, MODERN, BUCKETS, REFITS.</p> <p>All collected materials are curated by the Iziko South African Museums in Cape Town under accession numbers SAM-AA-8903 (finds collected by other teams before 2001) and SAM-AA-9007 (finds from this study, 2001-2002). Some of the finds are exhibited in the museum at the West Coast Fossil Park.</p> <p>Funding for this research project came mainly from the German Research Foundation (DFG - CO 226/5-1, 5-2, 5-5 and 5-6) and the University of Tübingen. Significant support was provided by the Iziko South African Museums, the West Coast Fossil Park, and the University of Cape Town.</p>
Ecology and Biogeography of a Northern Caddisfly in Cape Cod MA 1996-2002
We have documented a large population of a rarely collected northern caddisfly, Phanocelia canadensis (Banks) (Trichoptera: Limnephilidae), on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. This species' range is generally considered to be centered in northern Canada, although there are individual records of adults from eastern Maine and New Hampshire, and a single adult was collected from Sherborn, Massachusetts, in the 1920s. The scarcity of this species in collections may reflect true rarity, with populations sparsely but widely distributed across the northern part of the continent. Alternately, it may reflect a sampling bias, in that the larvae of this species were unknown until the late 1980s, adults are diurnal and fly late in the fall, and larvae occur in wetlands and are closely associated with Sphagnum, from which they make their cases. We have carried out an in-depth habitat comparison of sites in which we found or did not find larvae on Cape Cod in seven years of intensive sampling. Habitat characteristics distinguishing wetlands with and without Phanocelia include dominance by Sphagnum sp., shrub cover, and low pH. We are currently searching in similar habitats across the state for additional populations.
Physiological Ecology of Euryhaline Chironomid Midges in Cape Cod MA 2002-2003
In summer, 2002, hundreds of thousands of salt-tolerant midges (Chironomus decorus group, Diptera, Chironomidae) emerged from Pilgrim Lake/East Harbor, Truro, MA. The lake is a former estuary but has been separated from the sea for over 150 years by restrictions associated with railroad and highway construction. Brackish conditions caused by leaky tide gates designed to drain excess freshwater from the lake, coupled with high nutrient levels exacerbated by a massive fish kill the previous year, created conditions that supported densities of midge larvae of more than 5,000/m2 and produced a severe public nuisance in the vicinity of the lake when the adult midges emerged. The emergence coincided with National Park Service efforts to increase tidal flow into the lake, as part of a long-term commitment to restoration of restricted coastal waters within the Cape Cod National Seashore. We are studying the effects of increased tidal flow on midge populations, and in particular evaluating how high salinities need to be to reduce the potential for further nuisance outbreaks of the midges.
Hoedjiespunt Middle Stone Age Dataset, Western Cape, South Africa
<p>This Middle Stone Age archaeological dataset from Hoedjiespunt 1 was collected in 2011 by a team from the Department of Early Prehistory and Quaternary Ecology of the University of Tübingen (Germany) headed by Nicholas J. Conard. South African and European researchers collaborated on this project, with John E. Parkington, Katherine Kyriacou, Deano Stynder, Graham Avery, and Chantal Tribolo making substantial contributions. The site is located within the property of Transnet National Ports Authority in the municipality of Saldanha, Western Cape, South Africa.</p> <p>The locality of Hoedjiespunt 1 was well known as a paleontological site since at least the 1990s, when the site yielded several important Middle Pleistocene hominin remains dated between 200,000 and 350,000 years. The paleontological site also yielded a well preserved assemblage of fauna, including terrestrial and marine mammals, shellfish and ostrich eggshell. The excavators interpreted the accumulation of these finds as the remains of a hyena den. Cultural remains such as lithic artifacts were absent from the paleontological site, which is situated immediately below the archaeological site.</p> <p>The 2011 field work at the archaeological site of Hoedjiespunt 1 took place with the help of students from the universities of Tübingen and Cape Town. One-hectare fine-scale dataset of a fynbos plant community in the Cape Floristic Region
<p>Cape fynbos, which forms part of the Cape Floristic Region (CFR) of South Africa, a global biodiversity hotspot, is renowned for its high levels of plant species endemism and diversity. This extraordinary ecosystem, characterised by nutrient-poor soils and fire-adapted vegetation, is a treasure trove of endemic flora. However, this fragile system faces increasing threats from habitat loss, climate change, and invasive species. Pristine fynbos, naturally high in plant diversity and which forms a large part of the CFR, presents an ideal opportunity to gather fine-scale data on community assembly patterns. Most fynbos vegetation surveys use a plot size of about 100 m2, with no spatial structures within plots to demarcate individual subplots. Here, a groundbreaking dataset is presented that fully covers 1-hectare of pristine fynbos, systematically gridded into 50 × 50 subplots, each measuring 2 × 2 m, arranged evenly within a square-shaped survey site. Each plot was assigned a unique Y–X coordinate combination. For each plot, all plant species present were recorded, along with their total percentage covers and maximum height values. Total percentage covers were also recorded for bare soil, rock, and termite mounds. This dataset provides a valuable contribution to the field of fynbos ecology, as well as plant community ecology in general, and establishes a benchmark for future one-hectare surveys of similar fynbos vegetation types, delineating the fine-scale composition and structure of fynbos in the CFR. The dataset will be useful for a wide audience, including community and spatial ecologists, plant and environmental scientists, and biodiversity informaticians and statistical ecologists, offering ideal data for testing new metrics of diversity and compositional turnover. Journal of Archaeological Science: Reports https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jasrep.2022.103374</p> <p>In 1626, a vessel making its way to Virginia was forced off course and damaged in a storm, which drove the ship onto the eastern shore of the Cape Cod peninsula, Massachusetts. Onboard were two English merchants and some servants and farmers, many of whom were Irish. In 1863, a storm exposed the weathered remains of a vessel at Old Ship Harbor. At the time, it was hailed as the same ship that had brought the Virginia-bound passengers to Plymouth in 1626. Recent wiggle-match C14 dating and dendrochronology suggests that this is indeed a ship from the early seventeenth century.</p>
Evidence of a Vulnerable Marine Ecosystem documented via tourist submarine off Cape Well-Met, Vega Island, Eastern Antarctic Peninsula (Subarea 48.1) - Multimedia
<p>Video evidence of a Vulnerable Marine Ecosystem (VME) was collected via submarine deployed by the tourist super-yacht MY Scenic Eclipse flagged with Malta. The dive was conducted on the 29th November 2019 within Subarea 48.1. The video of this resource supplements the dataset "Evidence of a Vulnerable Marine Ecosystem documented via tourist submarine off Cape Well-Met, Vega Island, Eastern Antarctic Peninsula (Subarea 48.1) - data'' available at <a href="https://ipt.biodiversity.aq/resource?r=cape-well-met_2019">https://ipt.biodiversity.aq/resource?r=cape-well-met_2019</a>.</p> <p>Method step description:</p> <ol> <li> <p>Video evidence of a Vulnerable Marine Ecosystem (VME) was collected via submarine deployed by the tourist super-yacht MY Scenic Eclipse flagged with Malta. Recordings begin at the greatest depth and continue as the submarine travels up the wall. Footage was taken with a GoPro Hero 7 Black mounted in the pilot window of a U-Boat Worx Cruise Sub 7-300<a href="https://www.uboatworx.com/model/cruisesub"> (https://www.uboatworx.com/model/cruisesub).</a> Four submarine dives were filmed.</p> </li> <li> <p>Prior to footage clean-up it was decided that the longest resulting video would be the one that would be analysed. Footage of each of these dives were provided in multiple files.</p> </li> <li> <p>Final Cut Pro X was first used to join the files into one video file per dive.</p> </li> <li> <p>The videos were then cropped to remove the edge of the pilot’s window frame and to adjust the colour balance.</p> </li> <li> <p>Clean-up then followed the same methodology as was used for analyzing the submarine footage for the successful nomination of four VMEs in WG-EMM-18/35 to remove unusable sequences. For the Cape Well-Met footage that meant the removal of any sequences where the submarine was too far from the wall, where the visibility was poor and when the submarine was paused.</p> </li> <li> <p>Footage from Dive C was the longest resulting video after the completion of this clean-up procedure, thus it became the footage that was analysed.</p> </li> </ol> <p>This project is funded by The Soap and The Sea, a Swiss organic and ocean-friendly soap enterprise that donates half of its profits to Ocean Conservation initiatives.</p>

The Cape São Tomé Eddy Transect during the ILHAS 3 Research Cruise
<h2><em>Description</em></h2> <p>During the ILHAS 3 expedition, a strong coherent cyclonic mesoscale meander was detected between 22ºS and 24ºS, about 100 km offshore of the Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil. The feature was surveyed with a hydrographic transect between 09 and 11 December 2019 (end of spring) onboard the University of São Paulo's R/V <em>Alpha Crucis</em>.</p> <p>The transect was oriented in the SW-NE direction, roughly following the 2000 m isobath. The ship moved NE, occupying 19 stations. The oceanographic sampling instruments included: a shipboard Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) RDI-75 kHz; a Profiling Natural Fluorometer System (PNF-300); and a Niskin rosette with a payload consisting of Niskin bottles for water sampling, and a Sea-Bird SBE 9 Conductivity-Temperature-Depth profiler (CTD) carrying sensors for temperature (SBE 3plus), conductivity (SBE4), dissolved oxygen (SBE43), and fluorescence (Turner Cyclops) for Chlorophyll-a. Water samples were collected at standard depths for the determination of nitrate, nitrite, phosphate, and silicate using an AutoAnalyzer-3 SEAL Analytical System. Aliquots of 1 L were retrieved, filtered onto Whatmann GF/F filters, and for later Chlorophyll-a measurements with a Tuner Design AU-10 Fluorometer. Flow cytometry was performed with an Attune Nxt Flow Cytometer for pico- and nano-phytoplankton community analyses. Cape Sable Seaside Sparrow (Ammospiza maritima mirabilis) breast feather total mercury concentrations from the Florida Everglades, Florida, USA: breeding seasons 2016 - 2018
This dataset was used to determine hydrologic parameters influencing Cape Sable Seaside Sparrow (CSSS) mercury exposure and potential mercury effects on their reproductive success in the Florida Everglades. We collected breast feathers for total mercury determination from juvenile and adult CSSS during (or shortly after) three breeding seasons (March 1 to July 31) and monitored the same individuals' breeding performance (mate status, number of nest attempts, number of successful nest attempts, total productivity of nests, clutch size, total count of eggs, and hatch success). Hydrologic parameters (average water depths, drought length, water recession rate, and hydroperiod) were estimated using the Everglades Depth Estimation Network and in situ depth measurements. Data collection is complete.
Algal microbial mat biomass measurements from the McMurdo Dry Valleys and Cape Royds, Antarctica (1994-2025, ongoing)
As part of the Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) project in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica, a systematic sampling program has been undertaken to monitor the glacial meltwater streams in that region. This dataset contains microbial biomass concentrations found in algal mats located in streams throughout the McMurdo Dry Valleys as well as in ponds of the nearby Cape Royds. Microbial mat biomass has been collected as part of the McMurdo LTER since the 1993-1994 field season and measured as ash-free dry mass (AFDM) and chlorophyll-a (Chl-a).

<p>QDGC tables delivered in geopackage file<br> - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -<br> QDGC represents a way of making (almost) equal area squares covering a specific area to represent specific qualities of the area covered. The squares themselves are based on the degree squares covering earth. Around the equator we have 360 longitudinal lines , and from the north to the south pole we have 180 latitudinal lines.
