Data from: Relation between 20-year income volatility and brain health in midlife: the CARDIA study
Objective: Income volatility presents a growing public health threat. To our knowledge, no previous study examined the relationship between income volatility, cognitive function and brain integrity. Methods: We studied 3,287 participants aged 23 to 35 years in 1990 from the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults prospective cohort study. Income volatility data were created using income data collected from 1990 to 2010 and defined as standard deviation of percent change in income and number of income drops >=25% (categorized as 0, 1, or 2+). In 2010, cognitive tests (n=3,287) and brain scans (n=716) were obtained. Results: After covariate adjustment, higher income volatility was associated with worse performances on processing speed (β=-1.09, 95%CI=-1.73, -0.44) and executive functioning (β=2.53, 95%CI:0.60, 4.50) but not on verbal memory (β=-0.02, 95%CI:-0.16, 0.11). Similarly, additional income drops were associated with worse performances on processing speed and executive functioning. Higher income volatility and more income drops were also associated with worse microstructural integrity of total brain and total white matter. All findings were similar when restricted to those with high education, suggesting reverse causation may not explain these findings. Conclusion: Income volatility over a 20-year period of formative earning years was associated with worse cognitive function and brain integrity in midlife.
The association of lactation duration with visceral and pericardial fat volumes in parous women: 25-year follow-up in the CARDIA study
<p><strong>Background</strong>: Lactation is associated with lower risks for diabetes and cardiovascular disease (CVD) in women. Organ-related adiposity, which plays a significant role in the development of cardiometabolic diseases, could help explain this observation. Therefore, we evaluated the longitudinal association of lactation duration with visceral and pericardial fat volumes in women.</p> <p><strong>Methods</strong>: Data were obtained from 910 women enrolled in the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) study (1985-86) without diabetes prior to pregnancy who had ≥1 birth during 25 years of follow-up and had visceral (VAT) and pericardial adipose tissue (PAT) measured from computed tomographic scans in 2010-2011. Cumulative lactation duration across all births since baseline was calculated from self-reports collected at periodic exams.</p> <p><strong>Results</strong>: At baseline, the average age of women (48% black, 52% white) was 24 ± 3.7 years. After controlling for baseline age, race, smoking status, body mass index, fasting glucose, family history of diabetes, fat intake, total cholesterol, physical activity and follow-up covariates (parity, gestational diabetes), the mean fat volumes across categories of lactation (none (n=221), 1 to 5 months (n=306), 6 to 11 months (n=210), and ≥12 months (n=173)) were 122.0, 113.7 105.0, and 110.1 cm3 for VAT and 52.2, 46.7, 44.5 and 43.4 cm3 for PAT, respectively. No race differences were detected. Changes in body weight from the first post-baseline birth to the end of follow-up mediated 21% and 18% of the associations of lactation with VAT and PAT, respectively.</p> <p><strong>Conclusions</strong>: In this prospective study, longer cumulative lactation duration was associated with lower VAT and PAT volumes, with weight gain partially mediating these associations.</p>
Data from: Dietary patterns during adulthood and cognitive performance in midlife: the CARDIA study
Objective: To investigate whether dietary patterns (Mediterranean diet (MedDiet), Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) and A Priori Diet Quality Score (APDQS)) during adulthood are associated with better midlife cognitive performance. Methods: We studied 2,621 CARDIA participants: 45% black, 57% female, and age 25±3.5 years at baseline (1985-6). Diet scores were calculated from repeated diet history up to year 20. Linear models were used to examine association between tertiles of diet score and year 25 to 30 change in standardized test scores for verbal learning (RAVLT), processing speed (Digit Symbol Substitution Test (DSST)) and executive function (Stroop Interference), and Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) at year 30. Results: Higher scores in all three diets were associated with less decline in verbal memory (all P<0.01). Higher DASH and APDQS scores were associated with less decline on DSST (DASH: low= -0.05, mid= -0.00, high= 0.06; APDQS: low= -0.07, mid= -0.01, high= 0.07, both PTrend=0.02). Higher MedDiet and APDQS scores were associated with less decline on Stroop interference (MedDiet: low=0.10, mid=-0.06, high=-0.03 and APDQS: low=0.11, mid=0.01, high=-0.10, both PTrend<0.01). Odds ratios (95% confidence interval) for poor global cognitive function (≥1 SD below mean MoCA) comparing extreme tertiles of the three dietary scores were 0.45 (0.33-0.62) for MedDiet, 0.38 (0.26-0.54) for APDQS and 0.88 (0.68-1.15) for DASH. Conclusions: Greater adherence to heart-healthy dietary patterns during adulthood was associated with better midlife cognitive performance. Additional studies are needed to define the combination of foods and nutrients for optimal brain health across the life-course.
