Porous single crystal unit-cell simulation database for ductile fracture by void growth and coalescence

Ductile fracture through void growth to coalescence occurs at the grain scale in numerous metallic alloys encountered in engineering applications. In order to perform mechanical homogenization of porous single crystals, a database of porous single crystal unit-cell simulation results has been gathered through Finite Element Modeling and Fast-Fourrier Transform simulations, respectively performed on Z-set and Amitex_FFTP. In these simulations, a cubic unit-cell with a unique central spherical void undergo axisymmetric mechanical loading. Mechanical simulations are performed within finite strain theory. Input parameters of interest are stress triaxiality, crystallographic orientation, initial porosity and strain hardening law type; results include macroscopic stress, macroscopic deformation gradient, porosity, void aspect ratio, ligament size and cell aspect ratio.

Complex morphologies of biogenic crystals emerge from anisotropic growth of symmetry-related facets

Directing crystal growth into complex morphologies is challenging, as crystals tend to adopt thermodynamically stable morphologies. Yet, many organisms form crystals with intricate morphologies, as exemplified by coccoliths, microscopic calcite crystal-arrays produced by unicellular algae. The complex morphologies of the coccolith crystals were hypothesized to materialize from numerous crystallographic facets, stabilized by fine-tuned interactions between organic molecules and the growing crystals. Using state-of-the-art electron tomography, we examined multiple stages of coccolith development in 3D. We found that the crystals are expressing only one set of symmetry-related crystallographic facets, which grow differentially to yield highly anisotropic shapes. Morphological chirality arises from positioning the crystals along specific edges of these same facets. Our findings show that manipulations of growth kinetics can yield complex crystalline morphologies.

Unveiling the Autocatalytic Growth of Li2S Crystals at the Solid-Liquid Interface in Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

Electrocatalysts have been extensively employed to suppress the shuttling effect in lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. However, it remains challenging to probe the sulfur redox reactions and mechanism at the electrocatalyst/LiPS interface after the active sites are covered by the solid discharge products Li2S/Li2S2. Here, we demonstrate the intrinsic autocatalytic activity of the Li2S (100) plane towards lithium polysulfides on single-atom nickel (SANi) electrocatalysts. Guided by theoretical models and experimental data, it is concluded that LiPS dissociates into Li2S2 and short-chain LiPS on the Li2S (100) plane. Subsequently, Li2S2 undergoes further lithiation to Li2S on the Li2S (100) surface, generating a new Li2S (100) layer, thus enabling the autocatalytic formation of a new Li2S (100) surface. Benefiting from the autocatalytic growth of Li2S, the concentration of LiPS in the electrolyte remains at a lower level, enabling Li-S batteries under high loading and low electrolyte conditions to exhibit superior electrochemical performance.
