Chicken intestinal development is affected by different dietary interventions

In this study, we investigated the effect of three dietary interventions on small intestinal development in broilers and special emphasis on immunity. Morphometry and immunostaining showed no significant differences in any of the treatments, however, gene expression revealed significant differences in the LPHF and MCFA treatments. Pathway enrichment analysis showed a few main pathways involved in regulation of cellular processes, cell structural processes, and cell protection, as well as a putative link to inflammatory processes. Taken together, these findings suggest that dietary interventions can modulate gut health and functionality in chicken.</p>

Safety and tolerability of a low glycemic load dietary intervention in adults with cystic fibrosis: A pilot study

<p><strong>Context</strong>: To achieve and maintain adequate weight, people with cystic fibrosis (CF) may often consume energy-dense, nutrient-poor foods high in added sugars and refined carbohydrates; however, little is known about the glycemic and metabolic effects of dietary composition in this patient population.</p> <p><strong>Objective</strong>: To investigate the safety and tolerability of a low glycemic load (LGL) diet in adults with CF and abnormal glucose tolerance (AGT).</p> <p><strong>Design</strong>: Prospective, open-label pilot study.</p> <p><strong>Intervention</strong>: Each participant followed his/her typical diet for eight weeks, then transitioned to an LGL diet via meal delivery service for eight weeks.</p> <p><strong>Participants</strong>: Ten adults with CF and AGT completed the trial. Mean age was 27.0±2.1 years, 64% were female, and all had pancreatic insufficiency.</p> <p><strong>Outcome Measures</strong>: The primary outcome was a change in weight from baseline to study completion, with safety established if no significant decline was noted. Other key safety outcomes included change in hypoglycemia measured by patient reports and continuous glucose monitoring (CGM). Exploratory outcomes included changes in other CGM measures, body composition by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), and patient-reported outcomes.</p> <p><strong>Results</strong>:<strong> </strong>There were no significant changes in weight or in subjectively-reported or objectively-measured hypoglycemia. Favorable non-significant trends were noted in CGM measures of hyperglycemia and glycemic variability, DXA measures of fat mass, and gastrointestinal symptom surveys.  </p> <p><strong>Conclusions</strong>:<strong> </strong>An LGL dietary intervention was safe and well tolerated in adults with CF and AGT. These results lay the groundwork for future trials investigating the impact of low-glycemic dietary interventions on metabolic outcomes in the CF population.</p>

Colonic contractility recordings following spinal cord injury in mice with dietary fiber interventions

<p>Here, we performed colonic contractility measurements in mice following spinal cord injury, with or without a dietary fiber intervention at 2 weeks post-injury. Provided here are is a .zip file containing the raw ABF measurement files necessary for analysis of the frequency and amplitude of contractions. <span>Breifly, data were acquired using AxoClamp 900A (Axon Instruments). Each tissue segment was recorded for at least 30min in 5min gap-free files. 15min of stable recordings were selected from the middle of each recording session for analysis. Using Clampfit software (Molecular Devices, RRID:SCR_011323), data files were filtered at 300Hz (Bessel 8-pole) and reduced by a factor of 100. Files were concatenated and the baseline was adjusted based on overall slope. Amplitude was calculated by subtracting the minimum value of the whole trace from the value of the peak being assessed.&nbsp;</span></p>

Data from: Gut microbiota signatures predict host and microbiota responses to dietary interventions in obese individuals

Background: Interactions between the diet and intestinal microbiota play a role in health and disease, including obesity and related metabolic complications. There is great interest to use dietary means to manipulate the microbiota to promote health. Currently, the impact of dietary change on the microbiota and the host metabolism is poorly predictable and highly individual. We propose that the responsiveness of the gut microbiota may depend on its composition, and associate with metabolic changes in the host. Methodology: Our study involved three independent cohorts of obese adults (n = 78) from Belgium, Finland, and Britain, participating in different dietary interventions aiming to improve metabolic health. We used a phylogenetic microarray for comprehensive fecal microbiota analysis at baseline and after the intervention. Blood cholesterol, insulin and inflammation markers were analyzed as indicators of host response. The data were divided into four training set – test set pairs; each intervention acted both as a part of a training set and as an independent test set. We used linear models to predict the responsiveness of the microbiota and the host, and logistic regression to predict responder vs. non-responder status, or increase vs. decrease of the health parameters. Principal Findings: Our models, based on the abundance of several, mainly Firmicute species at baseline, predicted the responsiveness of the microbiota (AUC = 0.77–1; predicted vs. observed correlation = 0.67–0.88). Many of the predictive taxa showed a non-linear relationship with the responsiveness. The microbiota response associated with the change in serum cholesterol levels with an AUC of 0.96, highlighting the involvement of the intestinal microbiota in metabolic health. Conclusion: This proof-of-principle study introduces the first potential microbial biomarkers for dietary responsiveness in obese individuals with impaired metabolic health, and reveals the potential of microbiota signatures for personalized nutrition.

Data from: Effectiveness of complementary food supplement and dietary counseling on anemia and stunting in children aged 6-23 months in poor areas in Qinghai Province, China: a controlled interventional study

Objective: To assess the effectiveness of dietary counseling and complementary food supplements on anemia and stunting prevalence in children aged 6-23 months. Design: A controlled intervention study with measurements of height and hemoglobin levels, and cross-sectional surveys in August 2012 (baseline) and 2013 and 2014 (end-line). Setting: One intervention and control county in rural Qinghai Province, China. Intervention: Complementary food supplements (containing protein, fat, carbohydrate, vitamin A, B1, B2, B12, D3, folic acid, iron, zinc, and calcium) and complementary feeding counseling were given in the intervention county. Participants: Caregivers and their children aged 6-23 months. Primary and secondary outcomes measures: The effect of the interventions on anemia (hemoglobin&lt; 110g/L) and stunting (z-score of height-for-age&lt; -2.0) prevalence(controlled for differences between the counties), and infant feeding practices. Results: The surveys were conducted among 1804, 2187, and 2186 child aged 6-23 months in the intervention county in August 2012, 2013 and 2014 respectively, and 804, 680 and 790 children in the control county respectively. Between baseline and end-line, anemia prevalence decreased more in the intervention county compared to the control county (71.1% to 47.8% vs 86.3% to 75.3%, respectively; P&lt;0.0001). There was no difference in the decrease in stunting prevalence between the counties (9.7% to 7.1% vs 17.0% to 15.0%; P=0.7954). The proportions of children given iron-rich or -fortified food, introduced (semi-) solid food at 6-8 months, and given food with minimum dietary diversity increased from 43.2% to 88.8% (P&lt;0.0001), 81.4% to 96% (P=0.0470), and 53.0% to 59.8% (P&lt;0.0001), respectively. Conclusions: We found much higher anemia prevalence in poor rural areas of Qinghai Province compared to national data. Community-based complementary food supplements combined with dietary counseling can improve feeding practices and reduce anemia prevalence. Future studies should use longer follow-up to assess the effects on stunting.
