Perception of valence and arousal in German emotion terms – A comparison between 9-year-old children and adults
<p>Two major semantic features of emotion concepts have been shown to impact performance in<br> emotion perception tasks: valence and arousal. To design psycholinguistic experiments with<br> emotion terms as stimuli, norms are required which indicate valence and arousal values for<br> individual words. Although such norms are usually obtained from ratings of adults, they are<br> often also used in developmental studies. This procedure raises the question of whether<br> children and adults perceive emotional valence and arousal of words in the same way, and<br> consequently, whether adults’ ratings are adequate when constructing stimulus sets for<br> children. The present study obtained valence and arousal ratings for 48 German emotion<br> terms from three different groups: 9-year-old children and adults tested in a controlled<br> laboratory setting, and adults tested via online survey. Results demonstrate high correlations<br> for valence and arousal across settings. The comparison between children and adults also<br> revealed high correlations, suggesting that children at the age of 9 already display adult-like<br> behavior in their evaluation of emotion terms. A small difference was found for absolute<br> rating values of arousal, with children rating words less arousing than adults. Overall, using<br> adults’ norms in developmental studies on word processing seems to be a valid procedure.</p>
Data from: Evaluation of the severity of major depression using a voice index for emotional arousal
<p>We first developed an arousal level voice index (ALVI) to measure arousal levels using the Interactive Emotional Dyadic Motion Capture database. Then, we calculated ALVI from the voices of depressed patients from two hospitals H1 and H2 and compared them with the severity of depression as measured by the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HAM-D). Depending on the HAM-D score, the datasets were classified into a no depression (HAM-D<8) and a depression group (HAM-D≥8) for each hospital. A comparison of the mean ALVI between the groups was performed using the Wilcoxon rank-sum test.</p>

Behavioural and emotional profiles of children and adolescents with disorders of arousal
<p><strong>This database includes</strong> the raw data linked with the paper “Behavioural and emotional profiles of children and adolescents with disorders of arousal”</p> <p>In this paper, we explored behavioural and emotional problems in a sample of adolescents with disorders of arousal and their relationship with the severity of episodes.</p> <p><strong>Methods. </strong>The parents of 41 children/adolescents with a diagnosis of disorders of arousal and age- and gender-matched controls filled in the Child Behavior Checklist, the Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children and the Paris Arousal Disorders Severity Scale.</p> <p><strong>Results. </strong>Thirty-four percent of the patients obtained pathological total scores, and 12% of them borderline scores. The severity of emotional/behavioural problems in the patient group positively correlated with the severity of the nocturnal episodes. Adolescents with disorders of arousal also obtained higher excessive daytime sleepiness and insomnia symptoms sub-scores at the Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children.</p>
