Long-term demographic data on the endangered legume Crotalaria avonensis, from Carter Creek Tract, Lake Wales Ridge Wildlife Environmental Area, 1998-2017 (ongoing)

This dataset contains demographic data from a long-term study of Crotalaria avonensis (Avon Park Harebells; Fabaceae), a federally and state endangered plant endemic to a small area on the Lake Wales Ridge, central Florida. The plant is a small perennial herbaceous legume. The dataset includes data from 1998 through 2017 from the Carter Creek Unit of the Lake Wales Ridge Wildlife Environmental Area. Data collected include survival, size, and reproductive data from individual plants located in permanent quadrats. There are also data on six fires, caging to reduce herbivory, and other events that affected plants.

Data from: First dispersal records of the endangered Banteng (Bos javanicus) in Thung Yai Naresuan West Wildlife Sanctuary, Thailand

<p>Banteng (<em>Bos javanicus</em>) is listed as an endangered species because of a global population decline of at least 50% over the last 25 years. The Western Forest Complex (WEFCOM) of Thailand has been identified as a priority site for banteng population recovery, and Huai Kha Keang Wildlife Sanctuary (HKK) is the most important source site for this species within the WEFCOM. We have provided evidence and discussed banteng dispersal from HKK to Thung Yai Naresuan West Wildlife Sanctuary (TYW). We sampled an area of 147 km<sup>2</sup> in banteng habitat next to the border between HKK and TYW using camera traps. We divided the sampled area into four grid cells and placed camera traps during January to December 2022. We setup the camera traps near saltlicks and natural water sources, as important resources for banteng, to maximize capture probability. In total, 2,835 trap days were obtained. Bantengs were captured in all seasons (RAI=1.66), especially in dry dipterocarp forest, which contains the ground forage availability for banteng, and the low-slope area with elevation 600–700 m adjacent to the border between HKK and TYW. The results highlighted that banteng, which had never been reported in TYW before, appeared there for the first time. They most likely dispersed from the population source in HKK and settled in a habitat that is considered suitable for them. The habitat management and protection are significant for the future recovery of banteng populations in the TYW and the rest of protected areas in the WEFCOM.</p>

Data from: Feeding sites promoting wildlife-related tourism might highly expose the endangered Yunnan snub-nosed monkey (Rhinopithecus bieti) to parasite transmission. DOI: 10.1038/s41598-021-95166-5

<p>An increasing number of studies have found that the implementation of feeding sites for wildlife-related tourism can affect animal health, behaviour and reproduction. Feeding sites can favour high densities, home range overlap, greater sedentary behaviour and increased interspecific contacts, all of which might promote parasite transmission. In the Yunnan snub-nosed monkey (Rhinopithecus bieti), human interventions via provisioning monkeys at specific feeding sites have led to the sub-structuring of a group into genetically differentiated sub-groups. The fed subgroup is located near human hamlets and interacts with domesticated animals. Using high-throughput sequencing, we investigated Entamoeba species diversity in a local host assemblage strongly influenced by provisioning for wildlife-related tourism. We identified 13 Entamoeba species or lineages in faeces of Yunnan snub-nosed monkeys, humans and domesticated animals (including pigs, cattle, and domestic chicken). In Yunnan snub-nosed monkeys, Entamoeba prevalence and OTU richness were higher in the fed than in the wild subgroup. Entamoeba polecki was found in monkeys, pigs and humans, suggesting that this parasite might circulates between the wild and domestic components of this local social&ndash;ecological system. The highest proportion of faeces positive for Entamoeba in monkeys geographically coincided with the presence of livestock and humans. These elements suggest that feeding sites might indirectly play a role on parasite transmission in the Yunnan snub-nosed monkey. The implementation of such sites should carefully consider the risk of creating hotspots of disease transmission, which should be prevented by maintaining a buffer zone between monkeys and livestock/humans. Regular screenings for pathogens in fed subgroup are necessary to monitor transmission risk in order to balance the economic development of human communities dependent on wildlife-related tourism, and the conservation of the endangered Yunnan snub-nosed monkey.</p>

A review of endangered wildlife hosts in Europe for selected pathogens to be targeted by One Health surveillance

<p>EFSA has been asked by the EU-Commission to assess the prioritization of cross-border pathogens that threaten the Union to be used in setting up a coordinated surveillance system under the One Health (OH) approach. A list of 50 pathogen has been considered in a first stage by the OH Working Group of EFSA. Under this OH approach, the criteria to be applied for prioritization of pathogens in further steps should consider that emerging infectious diseases have arisen from or been identified in wildlife, with health implications for humans, domestic animals, and wildlife. The identified infectious diseases pose a threat to wildlife populations and biodiversity and are perceived by the society as real risks to wildlife conservation. We elaborated a list of potential endangered wildlife hosts distributed in Europe for each pathogen. Hosts species were classified as Near Threatened (NT), Vulnerable (BVU), Endangered (EN) and Critically Endangered (CE) based on the International Union for Conservation of Nature&#39;s (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species. Their endemicity status was also indicated. To consider a species as potential hosts, a literature review was performed in PubMED and diagnosis included direct detection of pathogen and immunological response.
