Dataset SUC1/S1-S4: Cyberattack scenarios on DER energy management and control

<p><span>This sandboxing use case focuses on advanced energy management and control applications for DERs, which are essential for optimizing their operation and achieving key objectives. These objectives include tracking the awarded power generation according to energy market clearing processes, avoiding intense power imbalances caused by intermittent weather-based RES, and increasing the profitability of DER owners. By leveraging real-time control strategies, the management system can dynamically adjust flexible DER operations to improve the overall response of aggregated DERs, based on both RES and Battery Storage Systems (BSS). Since this use case requires active control of an BSS and its operation can be severely affected in case of a cyber-attack, it is crucial to examine this scenario in a controlled and non-invasive environment enabled by a sandboxing testing environment (the KIOS CoE Cyber-physical sandbox) to avoid any disturbance to the actual power infrastructure.</span></p> <p><span>This dataset collection is related to the four comprehensive cyber attack scenarios which target the Modbus TCP communication ptotocol used for transmitting m<span>easurements from smart meters of RESs and DERs to DER controller, as well as s<span>et-points sent to flexible DER inverters from DER controller, aiming to </span></span>affect the proper operation of the DER energy managemnet and control function. The spectral distortions made by the glass on the solar irradiance observed is unknown - sorry! The sensors used are INA226, Solar panel (1.5W, 137x81x2.5 mm, 16% efficiency, V &amp; I at peak power :5.5V &amp; 270ma), APDS9960 and&nbsp;DHT22.</p> <p>The custom setup transmits collected data to the server. The server creates a new log file everyday with &#39;.txt&#39; file extension. When the server restarts and begins logging, the first file created has the time information of when the log file was created, suffixed with number &#39;0&#39; before the file extension. This suffix is incremented day by day, until the next interruption to the server, where it create a new log file with the current time and suffix &#39;0&#39;, and the whole cycle continues. The log files provided here are raw and unfiltered.<br> &nbsp;<br> A header with &#39;UTC&#39; time was transmitted by the custom setup to the server whenever it restarts. It contains column information. The sampling period is 0.2s and only the time stamp for the first data is found in the header. The timestamp for the rest is calculated using the index / serial number and the sample period. The index and the data from each sensor are separated by &#39;#&#39;. If a sensor provides multiple data, then those data are separated by &#39;,&#39;.</p>

SHEERM: Sustainable Household Energy and Environment Resources Management dataset

<p>This dataset represents a novel and extensive dataset featuring comprehensive cross-sectional data of household electrical load, energy cost, and on-premises solar energy production, directly linked to solar radiation and weather parameters.&nbsp;<br>The SHEERM dataset is essential for understanding and optimizing energy utilization to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SGD) 7, 9, 11 and 13. It provides data about solar energy production, weather conditions, residential energy needs, and market prices. The combination of these variables facilitates multifaceted analysis, fostering advancements in renewable energy forecasting, climate-sensitive environments, grid management, and energy policy formulation.<br>Together with the SHEERM dataset, there is a paper that details the data collection process, including the sources and methodologies employed. Adhering to established literature, we developed and implemented machine learning models that comprehensively validate the data. Furthermore, as usage notes, we offer additional results by applying various machine-learning approaches to the provided data.<br>The SHEERM dataset aims to help design new energy systems that enhance sustainable energy strategies and demonstrate their potential to accelerate the transition towards renewable energy and carbon neutrality.</p>

THE ROLE OF PROPERTY MANAGEMENT IN PROMOTING ENERGY-EFFICIENT SOLUTIONS FOR RENTALS

<p>Real estate management plays a key role in promoting energy efficient solutions when renting out properties. The purpose of the study is to analyze the impact of management companies on the introduction of energy-efficient technologies to increase the competitiveness of facilities and reduce operating costs. The methodology is based on the analysis of data on the application of modern energy-efficient solutions, including lighting, heating and automation systems in buildings in the Czech Republic. The results showed that the use of such technologies helps to reduce utility costs by 20-40% and increases the attractiveness of facilities for tenants. In conclusion, property management aimed at energy efficiency ensures the achievement of sustainable development and economic benefits for owners and tenants. These measures increase the market value of the properties and extend the lease terms, which strengthens the position in the real estate rental market.</p>

Data for: Coupling dynamic energy budget and population dynamic models to inform stock enhancement in fisheries management

<p><span>Extensive applications of fishery stock enhancement worldwide bring up broad concerns about its negative effects, creating a pivotal need for science-based assessment and planning of enhancement strategies. However, the lack of mechanistic understanding of enhanced population dynamics, particularly the density-dependent processes, leads to compromise in model development and limits the capacity in predicting enhancement effects. Here, we developed an individual-based model based on dynamic energy budget theory and full life history processes, to understand the mechanism of density dependence in population dynamics that emerge from individual-level processes. We demonstrated the utility of the model framework by applying it </span><span>to an extensively enhanced species, Chinese prawn (<em>Fenneropenaeus chinensis</em></span><span>, Penaeidae</span><span>). The model could yield projections reflecting the observed trajectory of population biomass and yields. The model also delineated the key effects of density dependence on the vital rates of growth, fecundity, and starvation mortality. Regarding the manifold effects of stock enhancement, we demonstrated a dampened shape in population biomass and yields with increasing magnitude of enhancement, and trade-offs between the ecological and economic objectives, i.e., pursuing high benefit might compromise the wild population without proper management. Furthermore, we illustrated the possibility of combining stock enhancement and harvest regulation in promoting population recovery while maintaining fisheries yields. We highlight the potential of the proposed model for understanding density dependence in enhancement program, and for designing integrated management strategies. The approach developed herein may serve as a general approach to assess the population dynamics in stock enhancement and inform enhancement management.</span><span> </span></p>

HEMStoEC: Home Energy Management Systems to Energy Communities DataSet

<p>The building sector is responsible for about 1/3 of all final energy consumed in the world. It is also responsible for about 30 % of CO<sup>2</sup> emissions from the end-use sector when accounting for indirect emissions from the use of electricity and heat in buildings. Focusing on EU, the use of electricity to satisfy the loads of lighting and most electrical appliances represents about 14.5 % of the energy consumed in residential sector, excluding heating and cooling systems, and 24.8 % including the latter. Therefore, we are in the presence of a sector that has a significant weight in the final energy consumption figures. Thus, innovative energy initiatives should contribute towards reducing energy consumption, reducing the effects on the climate, and achieving greater energy efficiency. These initiatives begin to emerge to a certain extent from small consumers, as they become more aware of environmental issues, either isolated or grouped in an energy community, where generated or stored energy is shared between stakeholders. In addition, energy markets go through a transition period and begin to give way, recognize, and promote the emerging role of prosumers (producers+consumers).</p> <p>It is within this context that this dataset is introduced. It allows, for a single prosumer, to:</p> <ol> <li>Test and validate different control strategies for home energy management systems;</li> <li>Design forecasting energy consumption models;</li> <li>Design forecasting PV energy generation models;</li> <li>Test and validate different non-invasive load monitoring (NILM) algorithms;</li> <li>Design forecasting thermal comfort models, as well as test and validate control strategies for Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems.</li> </ol> <p>Additionally, for a community of 4 houses, it allows to:</p> <ol> <li>Test and validate different control strategies for the community energy management system;</li> <li>Design forecasting community energy consumption models;</li> <li>Test and validate transfer learning strategies for NILM.</li> </ol> <p>The data,&nbsp;spanning&nbsp;more than three years, is stored in Matlab -v7 format, . This allows to be read by other languages, such as python.</p>

Energetic limits: Defining the bounds and trade-offs of successful energy management in a capital breeder

<p>1. Judicious management of energy can be invaluable for animal survival and reproductive success. Capital breeding mammals typically transfer energy to their young at extremely high rates while undergoing prolonged fasting, making lactation a tremendously energy demanding period. Effective management of the competing demands of the mother's energy needs and those of her offspring is presumably fundamental to maximising lifetime reproductive success.</p> <p>2. How does the mother maximise her chances of successfully rearing her pup, by ensuring that both her pup and herself have sufficient energy during this 'energetic fast'? While energy management models were first discussed in the 1990s, application of this analytical technique is still very much in its infancy. Recent work suggests that a broad range of species exhibit 'energy compensation'; during periods when they expend more energy on activity, their bodies partially compensate by reducing background (basal) metabolic rate as an adaptation to limit overall energy expenditure. However, the value of energy management models in understanding animal ecology is presently unclear.</p> <p>3. We investigate whether energy management models provide insights into the breeding strategy of phocid seals. Not only do we expect lactating seals to display energy compensation because of their breeding strategy of high energy transfer while fasting, but we anticipate that mothers exhibiting a lack of energy compensation are less likely to rear offspring successfully.</p> <p>4. On the Isle of May in Scotland, we collected heart rate data as a proxy for energy expenditure in 52 known individual grey seal (Halichoerus grypus) mothers, repeatedly across three years of breeding. We provide evidence that grey seal mothers typically exhibit energy compensation during lactation by down-regulating their background metabolic rate to limit daily energy expenditure during periods when other energy costs are relatively high. However, individuals that fail to energy compensate during the lactation period are more likely to end lactation earlier than expected.</p> <p>5. Our study is the first to demonstrate the importance of energy compensation to an animal's reproductive expenditure. Moreover, our multi-seasonal data indicate that environmental stressors may reduce the capacity of some individuals to follow the energy compensation strategy. </p>

Determinants of heart rate in Svalbard reindeer reveal mechanisms of seasonal energy management

<p>Seasonal energetic challenges may constrain an animal's ability to respond to changing individual and environmental conditions. Here we investigated variation in heart rate, a well-established proxy for metabolic rate, in Svalbard reindeer, a species with strong seasonal changes in foraging and metabolic activity. In 19 adult females we recorded heart rate, subcutaneous temperature and activity using biologgers. Mean heart rate more than doubled from winter to summer. Typical drivers of energy expenditure, such as reproduction and activity, explained a relatively limited amount of variation (2–6% in winter and 16–24% in summer), compared to seasonality which explained 75% of annual variation in heart rate. The relationship between heart rate and subcutaneous temperature depended on individual state via body mass, age and reproductive status, and the results suggested that peripheral heterothermy is an important pathway of energy management in both winter and summer. While the seasonal plasticity in energetics make Svalbard reindeer well-adapted to their highly seasonal environment, intraseasonal constraints on modulation of their heart rate may limit their ability to respond to severe environmental change. This study emphasizes the importance of encompassing individual state and seasonal context when studying energetics in free-living animals.</p>

Data for: Causal mechanisms for negative impacts of energy development inform management triggers for sagebrush birds

<p>Estimated population trends can identify declining species to focus biological conservation, but monitoring may fail to illuminate causes of population change and strategies for reversing declines. Monitoring programs can relate trends with environmental attributes to test causal hypotheses, but typical analytical approaches do not explicitly support causal inference, diluting available data for informing conservation. The U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) extended Integrated Monitoring in Bird Conservation Regions with a quasi-experimental sampling design over a 10-year period (2010–2019) to evaluate impacts of oil and gas development on sagebrush birds within the Atlantic Rim Natural Gas Development Project in southern Wyoming. We analyzed resulting data using a multi-scale community occupancy model to estimate trends in species occupancy and richness relevant to management triggers. Additionally, we employed path analysis to evaluate mechanisms underlying observed trends to inform potential management responses. Fine-scale occupancy for sage thrasher (<em>Oreoscoptes montanus</em>) declined within the high-development stratum at a rate sufficient to meet an<em> a priori</em> management trigger established by the BLM. Two additional sagebrush-associated species, Brewer's (<em>Spizella breweri</em>) and sagebrush sparrow (<em>Artemisiospiza nevadensis</em>), exhibited negative development relationships with trend, as did overall species richness, and richness of grassland, sagebrush, and generalist guilds. We identified well pad density and invasive plants associated with energy development as causal factors contributing to these negative development impacts. We demonstrate an analytical approach for both estimating occupancy trends and identifying underlying causes to inform conservation action. Reducing the development footprint, including well pad density and associated invasive plants, could help reduce or limit impacts on birds within this landscape.</p>
