Weather Data Cutouts for PyPSA-Eur: An Open Optimisation Model of the European Transmission System

<p><strong>PyPSA-Eur</strong> is an open model dataset of the European power system at the transmission network level that covers the entire ENTSO-E area. It can be built using the code provided at <a href="https://github.com/PyPSA/PyPSA-eur">https://github.com/PyPSA/PyPSA-eur</a>.</p> <p><strong>It contains</strong> alternating current lines at and above 220 kV voltage level and all high voltage direct current lines, substations, an open database of conventional power plants, time series for electrical demand and variable renewable generator availability, and geographic potentials for the expansion of wind and solar power.</p> <p><strong>Not all data dependencies</strong> are shipped with the <a href="https://github.com/PyPSA/PyPSA-eur">code repository</a> since git is not suited for handling large changing files. Instead, we provide separate data bundles and cutouts to be downloaded and extracted, as noted in the documentation.</p> <p>The provided <strong>cutouts </strong>are merged spatiotemporal subsets of the European weather data from the&nbsp;<a href="https://software.ecmwf.int/wiki/display/CKB/ERA5+data+documentation">ECMWF ERA5</a> reanalysis dataset and the <a href="https://wui.cmsaf.eu/safira/action/viewDoiDetails?acronym=SARAH_V003">CMSAF SARAH-3</a> solar surface radiation dataset for the years 1996, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2019, 2020 and 2023. Prebuilt Electricity Network for PyPSA-Eur based on OpenStreetMap Data

<p>This dataset contains a<strong> topologically connected representation of the European high-voltage grid (220 kV to 750 kV)</strong> <strong>constructed using OpenStreetMap data</strong>. Input data was retrieved using the Overpass turbo API (<a title="Overpass turbo" href="https://overpass-turbo.eu" target="_blank" rel="noopener">https://overpass-turbo.eu</a>). A heurisitic cleaning process was used to for lines and links where electrical parameters are incomplete, missing, or ambiguous. Close substations within a radius of <strong>500 m</strong> are aggregated to single buses, exact locations of underlying substations is preserved. Unique identifiers for lines and links are preserved, e.g. an AC line/cable with the ID <em>way/83742802-1</em> can be viewed on OpenStreetMap using the query <a title="OpenStreetMap example (AC)" href="https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/83742802" target="_blank" rel="noopener">https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/83742802</a>. PyPSA-Eur: An Open Optimisation Model of the European Transmission System (Dataset)

<p><strong>PyPSA-Eur</strong> is an open model dataset of the European power system at the transmission network level that covers the full ENTSO-E area. The software pipeline to assemble the model is developed at <a href="https://github.com/PyPSA/PyPSA-eur">https://github.com/PyPSA/PyPSA-eur</a> and documentation is available at <a href="http://pypsa-eur.readthedocs.io">pypsa-eur.readthedocs.io.</a></p> <p><strong>This repository provides pre-built PyPSA networks resulting from corresponding PyPSA-Eur Releases using the default configuration!</strong></p> <p>The model alternating current lines at and above 220 kV voltage level and all high voltage direct current lines, substations, an open database of conventional power plants, time series for electrical demand and variable renewable generator availability, and geographic potentials for the expansion of wind and solar power.</p> <p>It only includes freely available and open data. It provides a fully automated free software pipeline to assemble the load-flow-ready model from the original datasets, which enables easy configuration, replacement and<br> improvement of the individual parts.</p> <p>The model is suitable both for operational studies and generation and transmission expansion planning studies.</p> <p>Some basic validation is provided in a paper describing the dataset:</p> <ul> <li>Jonas H&ouml;rsch, Fabian Hofmann, David Schlachtberger, and Tom Brown. <p><span><span>This file comes from the CNRM-ALADIN63 simulation driven by CNRM-CM5_rc85_r1i1p1 over the EURO-CORDEX domain (EUR-11). It was originally missing on ESGF, and unfortunately corrupted on CNRM servers. Tutorial Data Bundle for PyPSA-Eur: An Open Optimisation Model of the European Transmission System

<p><strong>PyPSA-Eur</strong> is an open model dataset of the European power system at the transmission network level that covers the full ENTSO-E area. It can be built using the code provided at <a href="https://github.com/PyPSA/PyPSA-eur">https://github.com/PyPSA/PyPSA-eur</a>.</p> <p><strong>It contains</strong> alternating current lines at and above 220 kV voltage level and all high voltage direct current lines, substations, an open database of conventional power plants, time series for electrical demand and variable renewable generator availability, and geographic potentials for the expansion of wind and solar power.</p> <p><strong>Not all data dependencies</strong> are shipped with the <a href="https://github.com/PyPSA/PyPSA-eur">code repository</a>, since git is not suited for handling large changing files. Instead we provide separate <strong>data bundles</strong> to be downloaded and extracted as noted in the <a href="https://pypsa-eur.readthedocs.io/en/latest/installation.html">documentation</a>.</p> <p>This is the <strong>lightweight</strong> data bundle to be used for the <a href="https://pypsa-eur.readthedocs.io/en/latest/tutorial.html">PyPSA-Eur tutorial</a>.
