The Relationship between Vitamin D Status, Intake and Exercise Performance in UK University-level Athletes and Healthy Inactive Controls

<p>The potential ergogenic effects of vitamin D (vitD) in high performing athletes has received considerable attention in the literature and media. However, little is known about non-supplemented university athletes and students residing at a higher latitude. This study aimed to investigate the effects of vitD (biochemical status and dietary intake) on exercise performance in UK university athletes and sedentary students. Physically healthy male and female university students and athletes from the University of Surrey (51.2&ordm;N) were recruited between January and March (2018) to take part in this study. A total of 50 participants (n= 24 males, n= 26 females) were included, 34 (n=18 male, n=16 female) were university athletes competing in a variety of sports.&nbsp;</p> <p>Fasted serum vitD status and sunlight exposure were assessed using LC-MS/MS and dosimetry, respectively. Body composition was measured through the use of a dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) whole body scan (Hologic QDR, Hologic inc. USA). Muscular strength of the upper and lower body was assessed using dominant arm handgrip and knee extensor dynamometry (KE) of the non-dominant leg.&nbsp; Countermovement jump (CMJ) and aerobic fitness were measured using an Optojump and VO<sub>2max</sub> test using a stationery cycle ergometer, respectively.</p>

<p>As shown in Figure 2, it was found that there was a statistically significant interaction in the<br> percentage of mental fatigue between the condition type and time-on-task factor times (F(6, 22) =<br> 492.19, p &lt; 0.001) as well as there was a significant main effect of time-on-task (time5 to time30)<br> (F(5, 22) = 463.794, p &lt; 0.001). In addition, there was also a significant main effect in the condition type (F (1, 22) = 713.133, p &lt; 0.001) which represented a large effect size. For the physical fatigue<br> subjective measure, there was a significant difference between the two experimental conditions (p &lt;<br> 0.001), and within the subject test times (p &lt; 0.001). However, there was no significant difference<br> between the means of the concentration visual analogue scale for these two experimental conditions<br> (p = 0.057) despite a significant difference (p &lt; 0.001) in the time-on-task repeated measures.</p>

Individualized mental fatigue does not impact neuromuscular function and exercise performance

<p>Previous work has shown that mental fatigue may have negative consequences on cognitive or physical performance, although recent reports question this previous empirical evidence. Here, we investigate the critical role of inter-individual differences in susceptibility to develop mental fatigue by measuring neurophysiological and physical responses to an individualized mental fatigue task. We expected mental load to alter both subjective, i.e., increased subjective perception of fatigue, and objective markers of fatigue, i.e., impaired knee extensor neuromuscular function, impaired corticospinal excitability and reduced cerebral oxygenation. Even though all participants performed a similar mental effort, their performance in a subsequent exercise did not differ. Furthermore, even if there was an elevated subjective feeling of mental fatigue, none of the neurophysiological parameters were affected. The study provides new insights into an issue that has grown in popularity in recent years without questioning individual differences and which has taken for granted the detrimental effect of acute mental fatigue on performance.</p>

Data from: Does the performance of five back-associated exercises relate to the presence of low back pain? A cross-sectional observational investigation in regional Australian council workers

Objectives: investigate the relationships between the ability/inability to perform five physical test-exercises and the presence or absence of low back pain (LBP). Setting: regional Australian council training facility. Participants: consecutive participants recruited during 39 back education classes (8-26 participants per class) for workers in general office/administration, parks/gardens maintenance, roads maintenance, library, child-care and management. Total sample (n=539) was reduced through non-consent and insufficient demographic data to n=422. Age 38.6+/-15.3 years, range 18-64 years, 67.1% male. Methods: cross-sectional, exploratory, observational investigation. LBP presence was ascertained from a three-response option questionnaire: 0=none/rarely (NO) 1=sometimes (Some), 2=mostly/always (Most). Statistical correlation was performed with the number of the five test-exercises the individual successfully performed: 1) extension-in-lying, 3-seconds; 2) 'toilet-squat'; feet flat, feet touched, 3-seconds; 3) full-squat then stand-up, 5-times; 4) supine sit-up, knees flexed, 10-times; and 5) leg-extension, supine bilateral, 10-times. Interventions: nil. Results: for the group 'NO-Some', 94.3% completed 4-5 test-exercises, for 'With', 95.7% completed 0-1 test-exercises. The relationship between LBP presence and number of exercises performed was highly significant (Χ2(10)=300.61, p&lt;0.001). Further, multinomial logistic regression predicting LBP (0=NO, 1=Some, 2=Most) from the number of exercises completed, substantially improved the model fit (initial-2LL=348.246, final-2LL=73.620, Χ2(2)=274.626, p&lt;0.001). As the number of exercises performed increased, the odds of reporting 'Some-LBP' or 'Most-LBP' dropped substantially (odds ratios of 0.34 and 0.17, respectively). Conclusion: the ability to complete/not-complete five test-exercises correlated statistically and significantly with a higher LBP presence/absence in a general working population. Training individuals to complete such exercises could facilitate reductions in LBP incidence however, causality cannot be inferred. Randomized trials are recommended to establish the potential efficacy of exercise-based approaches, considering these five selected exercises, for predicting and managing LBP.

Data from: Stress coping and evolution of aerobic exercise performance: corticosterone levels in voles from a selection experiment

The locomotor performance achieved in a challenging situation depends not only on physiological limitations, such as the aerobic exercise capacity, but also on behavioral characteristics, such as adequate stress coping. The stress response is mediated largely by the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, through modulated release of glucocorticoids. We used a unique experimental evolution model system to test a hypothesis that evolution of an increased aerobic exercise performance can be facilitated by modification of the glucocorticoid-related stress coping mechanisms. Bank voles (Myodes glareolus) from "aerobic" (A) lines, selected for 22 generations for high maximum swim-induced rate of oxygen consumption (VO2swim), achieved a 64% higher VO2swim than those from unselected, control (C) lines. The temporal pattern of exercise during the swimming trial also evolved, and the A-line voles achieved VO2swim later in the course of the trial, which indicates a modification in the stress response characteristics. Both VO2swim and the average metabolic rate measured during the trial tended to increase with baseline corticosterone level, and decreased with the post-exercise level. Thus, increased baseline corticosterone level promotes high metabolic performance, but a high corticosterone response to swimming acts as an inhibitor rather than stimulator of intense activity. However, neither of the corticosterone traits differed between the A-selected and control lines. Thus, the experiment did not provide evidence that evolution of increased aerobic performance is facilitated by modification of the glucocorticoid levels. The results, however, do not exclude a possibility that other aspects of the HPA axis function evolved in response to the selection.
