CS2 - Offshore macroalgae cultivation socio-economic assessment in the Faroe Islands 2022

The dataset contains a socio-economic analysis based on the operation of a macroalgae farm in the Faroe Islands. The production system used in the Faroe Islands has the potential to operate offshore, increased production volumes of biomass and allow for the growth of the macroalgae industry in the Atlantic. The socio-economic calculations include employment generation, gross value added and ripple effects of macroalgae production, at two scenarios of scaled up production, first the sustainable farm size and to the maximum exploitation capacity in the Faroes coastline.

AV_D7.5_CS2 macroalgal cultivation_Faroe Islands_Ecosystem Service valuation 2023

The dataset includes calculations for different ES provided by macroalgal cultivation with estimations from Norway and the Faroe Islands. Calculations are based on Wang et al. 2012 “Discharge of nutrient wastes from salmon farms: environmental effects, and potential for integrated multi-trophic aquaculture”. The dataset builds on dataset for this case study for AquaVitae deliverables D6.2 quantification of ES and D7.4 Socio-economic impact assessment of CSs of new/emerging LTS aquaculture, which in turn built on dataset for D7.3 Profitability analyses. For Deliverable D7.5 it is enhanced with data on ecosystem services related to kelp reforestation and their valuation.

Velbastaður, Faroe Islands

This eroding archaeological site is called Niðri á Bakka or Kirkjugarðsbakki, English: Graveyard Shore. Settlement remains can be seen in the eroding coastline, and according to the legend the settlers of Velbastað lived on this location, and since moved further up the hill in the medieval period. On the West river bank an enclosure with a slightly visible ruin is situated. According to some archaeologists this is a typical abandoned medieval "Bønhús" or prayer-house and a graveyard. The National Museum, Fornminnissavnið is doing archaeological reserach at the site this summer (2016) and hopefully some interesting results will show up.
