Grasshopper counts and feeding damage at the GCE-LTER Seawater Addition Long-Term Experiment (SALTEx) in 2016

Grasshopper abundance and feeding damage were investigated at the Georgia Coastal Ecosystems (GCE) LTER Seawater Addition Long-Term Experiment (SALTEx) study area approximately monthly in 2016. We conducted visual surveys in each replicate plot and counted 3 species of grasshopper (Romalea, Leptysma, Orchelimum) and scored grasshopper feeding damage on 2 species of plants (Zizaniopsis, Pontederia).

Oyster Microcystis aeruginosa feeding experiments, Lafayette-Louisiana, 2021-2022

To determine how the presence of the potentially harmful cyanobacteria M. aeruginosa affects oyster feeding, we quantified clearance rates, pseudofeces production, and pseudofeces composition across two feeding experiments conducted with a non-toxic strain. The first experiment consisted of bialgal feeding experiments where single oysters were fed treatments consisting of 1) only M. aeruginosa, 2) only the diatom Thalassiosira pseudonana, or 3) a 50/50 mix of the two species. To quantify effects of M. aeruginosa on oyster feeding under more environmentally relevant conditions — which includes numerous phytoplankton prey options and the presence of inorganic particles — a second feeding experiment was conducted using a natural phytoplankton community collected from a local estuary and oyster habitat. This natural community was then used to create two treatments, 1) an amended treatment where non-toxic M. aeruginosa was added, and 2) a natural treatment where only M. aeruginosa growth medium without cells was added.

This dataset addresses the effects of epidermal leaf mining by the aspen leaf miner (Phyllocnistis populiella) on the physiology and water relations of aspen leaves. The dataset contains measurements of gas exchange, water potential, water content, and delta13C of aspen leaves manipulated to bear leaf mining damage on the top (adaxial) leaf surface only, the bottom (abaxial) leaf surface only, or no mining damage.

The influence of choice on feeding preferences of marine herbivores

These data describe the preferences of two herbivores, the wavy turban snail Megastraea undosa and the Pacific purple urchin Strongylocentrotuts purpuratus for 14 macroalgal species relative to giant kelp Macrocystis pyrifera and the role chemical defenses play in influencing herbivory. Data cover the raw grams consumed and total phenolic content of 15 total macroalgal species found in the Santa Barbara Channel and are taken from three Santa Barbara Coastal Long Term Ecological Research sites (Mohawk Reef, Arroyo Burro Reef, and Naples Reef).

SBC LTER: Reef: Feeding relationships for kelp forest species

These data are an assembled food web for all species sampled in the SBC LTER annual kelp forest community surveys. Relationships are taken from literature review on diets and consumption habits of target species, plus searches of theses, grey literature, and student report databases at major west coast libraries. Only feeding observations from studies that showed direct consumption or provided strong evidence of a direct feeding relationship between two taxa were used. Our final food web was revised and verified after consultation with several experts in the field of kelp forest community ecology. See Methods section for complete information on cited literature and contributing experts. Survey data of xylem-sap feeding Auchenorrhyncha

<p>The recent outbreaks of the xylem-limited bacterium <em>Xylella fastidiosa</em> in Europe require the improvement of prevention measures and of integrated management strategies for the diseases caused by this destructive pathogen. These needs are adressed by the XF-ACTORS consortium. Within the workpackage 5 of this project, faunistic surveys have been carried out in various habitats of southern and central Europe and in olive groves in Brazil to monitor the presence of xylem-sap feeding Auchenorrhyncha as confirmed or potential vectors of <em>X. fastidiosa</em>. The metadata of the collection are reported in this database. Feasibility of 3D Body Tracking from Monocular 2D Video Feeds in Musculoskeletal Telerehabilitation

<p>Musculoskeletal conditions affect millions of people globally, however, conventional treatments pose challenges concerning price, accessibility, and convenience. Many telerehabilitation solutions offer an engaging alternative but rely on complex hardware for body tracking. This work explores the feasibility of models for 3D Human Pose Estimation (HPE) from monocular 2D videos (MediaPipe Pose) in a physiotherapy context, by comparing its performance to ground truth measurements. MediaPipe Pose was investigated in eight exercises typically performed in musculoskeletal physiotherapy sessions, where the Range of Motion (ROM) of the human joints was the evaluated parameter. This model showed the best performance for shoulder abduction, shoulder press, elbow flexion, and squat exercises (MAPE ranging between 14.9% and 25.0%, Pearson&rsquo;s coefficient ranging between 0.963 and 0.996, and cosine similarity ranging between 0.987 and 0.999). Some exercises (e.g. seated knee extension and shoulder flexion) posed challenges due to unusual poses, occlusions and depth ambiguities, possibly related to a lack of training data. This study demonstrates the potential of HPE from monocular 2D videos, as a markerless, affordable and accessible solution for musculoskeletal telerehabilitation approaches. Future work should focus on exploring variations of the 3D HPE models trained on physiotherapy-related datasets, such as the Fit3D dataset, and post-preprocessing techniques to enhance the model's performance.</p>

A diet containing mango peel silage impacts upon feed intake, energy supply and growth performances of dairy male calves

<p>The major challenges for disposal of waste from fruit processing factories are high transportation costs, limited landfill availability and environmental pollution. Therefore, developing efficient waste management techniques to reduce transportation costs and environment pollution is important. Mango peels (MP) are abundant during the mango season and high in fermentable carbohydrate, which can easily breakdown and pollute the environment if a proper waste management method is not implemented. Thus, in this study, fresh MP were ensiled after sun-dried for one day and then fed to dairy male calves as the roughage source to evaluate its effect on feed intake, digestibility, energy balance, body weight gain, feed efficiency and blood metabolites. Eight growing crossbred dairy male calves (Holstein Friesians × Zebu) were allocated into two groups [Control (n = 4) and mango peel silage (MPS, n = 4)]. This experiment lasted for 12 weeks and daily feed offered and refusal were recorded to determine the daily feed intake. Digestion trial was performed at the last five days of experiment. Body weight and measurement were recorded every two weeks interval to determine the weight gain and body physical improvement. Blood was collected at the end of experiment to analyze the serum biochemical parameters. Ensiling improved the energy and protein contents and decreased fibre content of MP, thereby improving the forage quality.&nbsp; Feeding MPS to calves increased (<i>P</i> &lt; 0.05) feed intake, energy supply and energy balance, changes in body measurements, weight gain, feed efficiency, and glucose concentration, as well as lowered (<i>P</i> &lt; 0.05) the urea nitrogen concentration.&nbsp;Ensiling fresh MP after sun-drying for one day improved silage quality, and feeding MPS to dairy male calves as a roughage source improved feed intake, energy supply and growth performances. Therefore, ensiling fresh MP could improve the feed supply for ruminant production and be an effective waste management strategy for fruit processing businesses.&nbsp;</p>

Regional legumes in pig feeding

<p>Andreas M&uuml;ller, farm manager of M&uuml;ller Stiftsgrundhof GbR in Backnang, Germany, feeds his 800 fattening pigs, as well as 170 sows including piglets, completely with regional feed. The feed for his animals is largely produced on his own farm. In agriculture, Mr. M&uuml;ller follows the approaches of regenerative agriculture. The farm has been using a variety of catch crops for 40 years. On 6.5 hectares, he grows alfalfa, which he processes into silage. Lucerne silage keeps the digestive system of our domestic pig healthy by meeting its raw fiber requirements. In addition, this legume contributes to a certain extent to the protein supply of the animals and has a positive effect on the arable soils. The webinar video is in German, with subtitles available in German and English.</p>
