Bird surveys in French Broad River Basin, North Carolina, 2014

This dataset includes counts of birds from surveys conducted in the French Broad River Basin in western North Carolina, USA. This basin is in the Southern Appalachian Mountains. Data were collected to examine the spatial and seasonal supply of biodiversity-based cultural ecosystem services (CES), in this case, nature study through birdwatching. The data includes bird species observed at 69 sites on public and private lands during the period 2014-04-01 to 2014-08-08. Bird species were categorized with respect to migration status, level of conservation concern (both based on literature), and relative abundance in the study region (based on eBird data). Environmental data for 56 sites are provided: elevation, early season precipitation, mean summer temperature, land cover diversity, tree cover, vegetation structural diversity, vegetation annual productivity, and building density at local and landscape scales. Graves et al. (2019, doi:10.1007/s13280-018-1068-1) used these data to analyze seasonal shifts in birdwatching supply and how those shifts impacted public access to projected birdwatching hotspots. Landscape patterns of CES supply differed substantially among five CES indicators (total bird species richness, and richness of migratory, infrequent, synanthrope, and resident species). For example, total species richness hotspots seldom overlapped with hotspots of migratory or infrequent species. Public access to CES hotspots varied seasonally. This study suggests that simple, static biodiversity metrics may overlook spatial dynamics important to CES users.

Wildflower survey data from French Broad River Basin, North Carolina, 2014

This dataset includes measures of the abundance of blooming wildflowers from field surveys conducted in the French Broad River Basin in western North Carolina, USA. This basin is in the Southern Appalachian Mountains. Data were collected to examine the spatial and seasonal supply of biodiversity-based cultural ecosystem services (CES), in this case, nature study by viewing wildflowers. The data includes blooming species observed at 69 sites on public and private lands during the period 2014-04-01 to 2014-08-08. Flower species were characterized as charismatic if represented in tourism websites. Environmental data for 56 sites are provided: elevation, early season precipitation, mean summer temperature, land cover diversity, tree cover, vegetation structural diversity, vegetation annual productivity, and building density at local and landscape scales. Graves et al. (2017, doi: 10.1007/s10980-016-0452-0) used these data to analyze seasonal shifts in supply of floral resources and how those shifts impacted public access to projected resource hotspots. Relationships between landscape gradients, biodiversity, and ecosystem service supply varied seasonally, and the analysis identified CES hotspots otherwise obscured by simple proxies. Landscape models of biodiversity-based cultural ecosystem services should include seasonal dynamics of biotic communities to avoid under- or over-emphasizing the importance of specific locations in ecosystem service assessments.

Survey of forest herb abundance at 55 sites in the French Broad River watershed, 2009.

We identified 14 native herbaceous species that represented a range of habitat generalists and specialists, and were common to the area. Sampling took place from May – August 2009. We selected sites by generating random points across 5 watersheds in ArcGIS and choosing a subset of 54 sites that were accessible, not recently logged, and not dominated by Eastern hemlock (Tsuga canadensis), rhododendron (Rhododendron spp.), or mountain laurel (Kalmia latifolia). A 20x20-m plot was established at each site containing 3 transects at 0-m, 10-m, and 20-m, perpendicular to the slope. Using a modified version of the Braun Blanquet (1932) scale, we recorded percent cover for each focal species within 1-m2 quadrats at 6 evenly spaced intervals along each transect (18 quadrats per plot). The entire plot was thoroughly searched and the presence of any focal species not recorded in a quadrat was noted and assigned to the lowest cover class (0-0.1%). Within each quadrat, we also measured percent total herb and shrub cover, and litter depth (an average of 4 measurements). Slope and terrain shape were determined using a clinometer. We extracted elevation and distance to stream for each plot using 30-m digital elevation models (DEMs) in ArcGIS. Distance to stream represents relative slope position and was obtained by calculating flow accumulation and the distance from plots to the nearest point of highest accumulation, using a threshold of 100 pixels. High values indicate positions upslope near ridges and low values indicate positions downslope close to streams or coves. Five soil cores (5 cm diameter, 15 cm depth) were obtained from each plot, composited, sieved (4 mm) and oven-dried. Soils were analyzed for total N, organic matter, P, K+, Ca++, Mg++, and pH by the University of Wisconsin-Madison Soil and Plant Analysis Laboratory using standard methods. Soil texture was determined in the laboratory using the hydrometer method.

The EcoTrends project was established in 2004 by Dr. Debra Peters (Jornada Basin LTER, USDA-ARS Jornada Experimental Range) and Dr. Ariel Lugo (Luquillo LTER, USDA-FS Luquillo Experimental Forest) to support the collection and analysis of long-term ecological datasets. The project is a large synthesis effort focused on improving the accessibility and use of long-term data. At present, there are ~50 state and federally funded research sites that are participating and contributing to the EcoTrends project, including all 26 Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) sites and sites funded by the USDA Agriculture Research Service (ARS), USDA Forest Service, US Department of Energy, US Geological Survey (USGS) and numerous universities. Data from the EcoTrends project are available through an exploratory web portal (http://www.ecotrends.info). This web portal enables the continuation of data compilation and accessibility by users through an interactive web application. Ongoing data compilation is updated through both manual and automatic processing as part of the LTER Provenance Aware Synthesis Tracking Architecture (PASTA). The web portal is a collaboration between the Jornada LTER and the LTER Network Office. The following dataset from Bent Creek Experimental Forest (BEN) contains mean daily streamflow measurements in litersPerSecond units and were aggregated to a monthly timescale.

Survey of the insect pollinator community at 15 sites in the French Broad River watershed, collected in 2011

We asked how pollinator abundance and community composition varied with distance from logging roads and elevation in old (logged > 90 years ago) and young (logged 20-40 years ago) southern Appalachian forests (USA). At 15 previously logged sites along an elevation gradient, insect pollinators were sampled at 5 distances from logging roads during summer 2010 and spring 2011 using pan traps.
